CYNTHIA TURNER’S
12/02/05 Good morning. It’s Friday, December 2, 2005, and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing. NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT Warner Bros. has acquired the movie rights to the teen-targeted novel The Extraordinary Adventures of Alfred Kropp, from author Rick Yancy, per Variety. The movie will be produced by Akiva Goldsman’s Weed Road Pictures, with the screenplay to be penned by David Iserson of Saturday Night Live. The Extraordinary Adventures of Alfred Kropp is the story of 15 yrs old Alfred. An orphan, Alfred doesn’t ever seem to pull the long straw in life, school is not easy, his head, hands and feet are big and he is shy and well, you get the picture, except for one thing he has a great sense of humor. Alfred winds up living with his absentminded Uncle Farrell, who talks him into getting involved in an adventure of Arthurian proportions. Cartoon Network has begun production on its latest animated series, Squirrel Boy (13 x 30 min). Slated to debut in summer 2006, Squirrel Boy follows the classic adventures of a squirrel (Rodney) and his boy (Andy, 10 yrs). Squirrel Boy features the voices of Tom Kenny (SponegeBob SquarePants) as Rodney’s squirrel friend Leon; Richard Horvitz as Rodney J. Squirrel; Pamela S. Adlon as Andy Johnson; and Kurtwood Smith (Red in That ‘70s Show) as Andy’s father. Created and executive-produced by Everett Peck, the series is being produced at Cartoon Network Studios. MORE KIDS STUFF Cartoon Network Asia Pacific has picked up Decode Entertainment and Aardman Animation’s Planet Sketch (13 x 11 min) series. Targeted to K7-11, Planet Sketch follows groups of recurring characters: the Street Rappers a group of mean/moody guys who like to play silly games when nobody is watching, the Gnaughty Gnomes, impish garden gnomes who enjoy playing gross-out pranks on innocent passers-by and the Parping Ponies, two horses who never can’t hold down a decent job due to their own issues, of shall I say a gaseous nature. A Decode/Aardman co-production, Planet Sketch is commissioned by CiTV and Teletoon. Four holiday animated specials will make their Canadian premiere on Teletoon this month:
MARKETING/LICENSING Reed Exhibition’s New York Comic-Con and Wizard Conventions have signed a marketing agreement under which the two trade/consumer event groups will promote and take part in the other’s events. The deal comes just a couple of months before the first New York Comic-Con trade/consumer show for comics/games/anime and other related industries, scheduled for February 24-26, 2006 in NYC at the Jacob K. Javits Center. According to NY Comic-Con organizers, Wizard will play a significant role in promoting its show and will help to build its attendance, including selling tickets for the show at www.wizarduniverse.com . NY Comic-Con is managed by Reed Exhibitions, a unit of Reed Elsevier plc. Wizard Conventions Inc. is a sister company of Wizard Entertainment, which focuses on the comic book and collectibles market and publishes magazine including Wizard: The Comics Magazine; InQuest Gamer: The Gaming Magazine; ToyFare: The Toy Magazine; and Anime Insider, and is the co-publisher of Toy Wishes: The Ultimate Guide to Family Entertainment. In related news, Indie movie writer/director/producer/actor Kevin Smith (Clerks, Jersey Girls, Mallrats etc. and producer/Good Will Hunting) will be a guest of honor at New York Comic-Con. In addition to his screenplays and movies Smith has written both comic books featuring his original characters as well as Marvel Comics (Daredevil, Spider-Man) and DC Comics (Green Arrow). Smith’s next film, The Passions of the Clerks, will be released in 2006. His movies are great, but most are rated R. EXECUTIVE MOVES Jason Hovey has joined Kaboose Inc. as VP/Kids & Educational Properties. Hovey will be a key member of Kaboose’s management team, and will continue to drive the strategic growth of Zeeks.com and Funschool.com, Kaboose’s kids and educational properties. Redstone, Chairman/CEO, Viacom Inc. yesterday announced the appointment of Carl D. Folta to the newly-created role of EVP/Office of the Chairman in 2006, following the separation of the organization into two publicly-traded companies. Folta will serve as chief representative of the Chairman and a corporate officer of both companies, reporting directly to Redstone. Folta, who joined the company in 1984, is currently EVP/Corporate Relations, Viacom. In his new role, Folta will be responsible for overseeing communications and administration for the Office of the Chairman, in consultation with the Boards of Directors for both new Viacom and CBS Corporation, working closely with Tom Freston and Leslie Moonves.
