Louisiana’s Bayou is the setting of Discovery Channel’s new reality series Ragin’ Cajuns premiering January 17 at 10p. Venice, Louisiana once was a thriving shrimping community and following the devastation by both Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the oil spill in 2010, the area is struggling to survive. The Bayou boys featured in this series continue though to work hard and play even harder. Ragin’ Cajuns is produced for Discovery Channel by Gurney Productions.
Fans of Animal Planet’s Whale Wars learned yesterday the series will return for a fifth season next June via Facebook. The upcoming season will again follow Captain Paul Watson and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society’s campaign against whaling in Antarctica. The number of episodes for the fifth season was not yet revealed. During its last season, Whale Wars averaged 1.06 million total viewers and ranks in the top three best-performing series in 2011 for Animal Planet among total viewers, A25-54, M25-54 and W25-54. The Lizard Trading Company produces Whale Wars.
Original series Ax Men is back on HISTORY with a fifth season starting January 8 at 9p. The series documents the history of the logging industry and details how technology has transformed those working in logging today even though the battle with nature remains constant. Original Productions is behind the series produced for HISTORY.
Next spring, Sundance Channel will premiere a second series of short films titled Beginnings from director Chiara Clemente. The films feature six creative Parisians exploring their early inspirations. Last year, the network aired seven episodes of Beginnings about creative New Yorkers. Beginnings is produced by Tanya Selvaratnam for Di San Luca Films.
Nat Geo WILD’s recent Second Annual Big Cat Week airing from December 12 through December 18 delivered the network’s highest rated week since its launch. Primetime programming featuring big cats throughout the week pulled in 5.9 million total viewers, 1.4 million more than in 2010.
Wednesday’s frosh season finale of FX’s American Horror Story marked the series’ most-watched episode by tallying 3.22 million total viewers. The concluding episode also drew in 2.19 million among A18-49 and 1.9 million with A25-54.

Entertainment Concepts International has a trio of syndicated projects:
- The weekly makeover series Sacred Spaces, with 26 half-hour episodes will make its world premiere the week of September 17, 2012. It is being sold as a 50/50 barter. Host Cary Weldy and co-host Jenny Milkowski uncover secrets and mysteries of the ancients and how those secrets relate to the world today to transform spaces both physically and energetically.
- Listen To Me: Buddy Holly is a one-hour special that made its world premiere on PBS this month is available worldwide excluding North America immediately. There is a one-hour documentary companion program which is available worldwide immediately and both are being offered for cash.
- Jackie Robinson: My Story is a 70-minute docu-drama that is available worldwide immediately and is being offered for cash.
As of January 1, 2012, WCIV-TV, the ABC affiliate in Charleston, SC said it will not be carried on Time Warner Cable and AT&T U-verse after the carriage contract expires on December 31, 2011 despite prolonged negotiations. WCIV-TV’s programming will continue to be available to viewers over-the-air as well as via DIRECTV, Dish Network, Comcast and Knology.

Wednesday A18-49 Analysis: FOX took charge Wednesday leading with a 3.0/9 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. FOX’s The X-Factor won the 8p hour at 3.2/10 with NBC’s Who’s Still Standing? next at 1.7/5. FOX remained on top during 9p with the last half hour of The X-Factor and I Hate My Teenage Daughter at an average of 2.9/9 and Univision’s La Fuerza del Destino moved into second place at 2.2/6. Then at 10p, CBS won with a CSI repeat at 1.6/5 and Univision stayed planted in the #2 spot with La Rosa de Guadalupe at 1.4/4.
