NBC is shaving the number of episodes for upcoming new midseason series Love Bites from 13 to 9 total episodes. NBC says the order for Love Bites is being cut to allow other midseason programming on its schedule. Love Bites in an hour-long romantic comedy starring Becki Newton about singles seeking love.

The Hasselhoffs on A&E has been pulled from the lineup after just two outings, reports New York Magazine. Starring David Hasselhoff and his two daughters, the show pulled 718,000 total viewers for its premiere, dropping 30% for its second episode. A total of 10 episodes were ordered.

MTV debuts the new series I Used to be Fat on December 29 at 10p following overweight teens from their last weeks of high school through their first days of college as they work hard to lose large amounts of weight to start anew. Each 60m episode concentrates on the weight-loss journey of one teen as they go through a huge lifestyle change. I Used to be Fat will also air around the world via MTV channels beginning March 2011. 3 Ball Productions created the series. 

Animal Planet opens season three of It’s Me or the Dog featuring world-famous dog expert and trainer Victoria Stilwell on January 8 at 8p. During the new season, Stilwell takes on problem pooches living with their owners in the New York Tri-State area. It’s Me or the Dog is produced in cooperation with Shed Media U.S.

National Geographic Channel renewed three of its series, according to Variety:

  • Expedition Great White was handed a 10-episode order. The one-hour series is produced by Fisher Productions. When Expedition Great White debuted on June 6, it became the network’s #2 launch ever, attracting 2.3 million people.
  • Locked Up Abroad, from Raw TV, was given a fifth season order and during the series’ fourth season Locked Up averaged 574,000 total viewers per episode.
  • Taboo from Beyond Entertainment was handed a seventh season commitment.

Discovery Channel’s Wednesday episode of Mythbusters featuring a special appearance by President Obama titled President’s Challenge was viewed by 2.24 million total viewers. The premiere episode at 9p was the top-rated cable program in primetime among M25-54, M18-34 and the #2 primetime cable program with M18-49 behind NBA basketball.

Comedy Central in the New Year will reveal a new logo and a fresh on-air look. The new logo will go away from the present urban graffiti style and instead be represented by a letter “C” within another inverted “C” and when the network has its name written out the word “Central” will be upside down. Comedy Central will debut its new logo officially on January 1, 2011 though it is being previewed on the network’s website now and will be completely integrated throughout the site by January 11. The logo was also designed with the intent of using it on digital platforms including social media. Comedy Central opted to not add a tagline with the new logo.

American Ninja Warrior opened a second season last Wednesday on G4 with three back-to-back hour-long episodes from 8-11p. The trio of episodes delivered close to 233,000 total viewers.

During a conference call with the media yesterday, Rick Feldman, President/CEO of NATPE||Content First and Kevin Beggs, NATPE Chairman and Lionsgate President/Programming and Production, said registration is “pacing far ahead of last year’s conference.” To date, more than 80% of the private exhibition suites have been sold and the floor exhibition space is almost sold out. More than 500 buyers from 40+ countries are registered to attend the market and conference held January 24-26 in Miami. Feldman said that while Las Vegas had been a good venue for NATPE, representatives from the European companies coming are in particular happier NATPE has moved to a more logistically and geographically better environment. Further, NATPE has cut its conference programming by a third to give more time for people to network. This week, Time Warner Cable introduced its new SignatureHome service, a package containing digital cable, internet service and digital home phone for residential customers. SignatureHome components include Whole House DVR, Remote DVR Manager, Wireless Home Networking for up to 14 devices and VoiceZone on PC. For its residential customers, TWC is also offering a specially trained team referred to as SignatureService agents including Personal Solutions Advisors and Connections Specialists.

Entertainment Studios, Inc. said its America’s Court with Judge Ross has received a firm go for a second and a third season. The daily 30m syndicated court series, shot in hi-def was cleared by stations owned by station groups including Acme, Barrington, Belo, Comp Corp., Cox, Gannett, Hubbard, Journal, LIN, Media General, Meredith, Mission, Newport, Nextstar, Raycom Media, Roberts, Sinclair, Tribune, Weigel and Young. America’s Court with Judge Ross is produced and distributed by Entertainment Studios.

Crown Media Holdings, Inc., owner and operator of Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel forged a multi-year renewal distribution deal with National Cable Television Cooperative (NCTC). The deal gives both networks continued clearance to NCTC’s 1,000 member companies.

Citizen Skull Productions and B. Wooding Media forged a deal to represent the North American rights for two series, Beginners Guide and Freshly Squeezed, both of which air on UK’s Channel 4.


Former Dallas star Larry Hagman is returning to TV, making an appearance on ABC’s Desperate Housewives. Hagman will play the love interest of Lynette’s mother, Stella Wingfield, played by veteran actress Polly Bergen. Hagman goes into production on the show next week.

REELZCHANNEL tapped correspondent Steve Patterson and TV personality Viviana Vigil as its new hosts of Hollywood Dailies. The duo will make their debut on the half-hour entertainment reporting show during next Monday’s episode at 530p.

Wednesday A18-49 Analysis:  CBS bested the competition Wednesday night at 3.0/9 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. CBS’ Survivor: Nicaragua was the leader at 3.6/10 during 8p and NBC’s The Sing-Off tuned up for a second place showing at 2.4/7. At 9p, CBS’ Criminal Minds delivered a wallop with 3.5/9 while ABC’s comedies Modern Family and Cougar Town averaged a #2 just a tenth of a rating behind at 3.4/9. CBS at 10p finished its winning streak of the night with The Defenders at 2.0/6 followed by NBC’s encore of Law & Order: SVU at 1.8/5.

Earlier this week, MTV Networks moved Jeff Lucas in charge of ad sales for MTV Networks Music networks and has additionally given Sean Moran more responsibility over sales for the music networks in a new “expanded” position, cites B&C. Furthermore, five senior sales executives who worked under Sean Moran are departing the company including Dan Lovinger, SVP at MTV; Laura Molen, SVP at VH1; Steve Reisman, who managed the New York office for MTV; and Alex Angeledes who headed the Los Angeles office. The fifth executive could not be identified at this time.

NBC Universal International hired Alan Brown to lead the company’s new Factual and Entertainment unit and Mario Stylianides to manage the Comedy division. Both Alan and Mario, as managers of their respective areas, will target and develop new television entertainment opportunities in the UK in addition to finding formats for international markets. Prior to their appointments, Alan was a Senior Commissioner/Entertainment at the BBC and Mario joins from Hat Trick where he was Head/Comedy.

As her employment contract at Showtime expires at the end of this month, Danielle Gelber, SVP/Original Programming, will leave her position at the network where she has been since 2002.  Among the shows coming under her leadership are The Big C, Weeds and The L Word.

Univision Communications Inc. tagged veteran journalist Isaac Lee as President/News and also named Alexander “Sandy” Brown as President/Sports. Univision also declared Alina Falcon, who has worked in various senior roles for the last 26 years, is leaving her current role heading news and sports programming and production to become a special advisor to Univision. Isaac most recently was founder and chairman/editor-in-chief of the magazine PODER and at Univision will head the news division in addition to strategic and editorial management of programming and production for Univision Networks, Univision Local Media and Univision Interactive Media. Isaac will be based in Miami, reporting to Cesar Conde, President, Univision Networks. Sandy, formerly CEO of Petry Holding will offer oversight across Univision’s sports strategy and operations as he supervises sports programming for the company’s platforms. Based in New York, Sandy also reports to Cesar Conde.

Miramax named former Fox Entertainment and News Corp. executive Mike Lang as CEO. Mike will supervise the company’s film library while based at Miramax’s headquarters in Santa Monica. Most recently, Mike served as a consultant to Filmyard.

Brian Mickley departed as head of his own firm, Brian Mickley Executive Search LLC to join Smith Arnold Partners as a Senior Recruiter in the Market Research Practice, effective immediately. In his new position, Brian will focus on market/media research recruiting for publishing, advertising, media and entertainment companies. Brian reports to Philip Busone, VP.
