AMC Networks CEO Josh Sapan said in an earnings call Thursday that AMC’s commitment to developing new original programming will keep it going strong, even as Breaking Bad enters its final season and Mad Men wraps for good in 2014. The exec pointed to cop drama Low Winter Sun, debuting Sunday, August 11 at 10p, and 2014’s computer drama Halt and Catch Fire and spy thriller Turn as promising entries. “Not everything will hit, but we think it’s a good moment for us,” said Sapan, who also noted, “We are already seeing great advertiser interest” in Sundance Channel, which is transitioning to a traditional ad model in the fourth quarter.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Si and Willie Robertson, from A&E phenom Duck Dynasty brave Hollywood to guest on the third season premiere of ABC‘s Last Man Standing. The ep featuring the bearded duo airs Friday, September 20 at 8p. Duck Dynasty season four premieres Wednesday, August 14 at 10p.

Time Warner Cable is taking a bigger hit than CBS in the retrans battle, according to a YouGov BrandIndex consumer perception survey. With about three million TWC subscribers still blocked from access to CBS programming, the cable company’s perception score plummeted from just under zero to minus 7 as of Monday, August 5. CBS’s score fell from between 2 and 3 to a neutral zero. The London-based YouGov BrandIndex is based on a representative survey of 4000 adults that asked, “If you’ve heard anything about the brand in the last two weeks, through advertising or word of mouth, was it positive or negative?”

With the fall season looming, Nielsen and FreeWheel announced a collaboration to enhance the measurement for online ad campaigns, making it “easier for FreeWheel’s many media clients to better forecast, traffic and measure the audiences of ad campaigns using TV-comparable metrics.” Said FreeWheel c-CEO and founder Doug Knopper, “TV is TV wherever it is consumed. Working with Nielsen allows our clients to measure and monetize their TV audiences wherever people choose to access their content.”

The Hillary headache: On Thursday’s Morning Joe on MSNBC, NBC News political director Chuck Todd called the net’s planned four-hour Hillary Clinton miniseries starring Diane Lane “a total nightmare for NBC News.” Republican National Committee chairman Reince Preibus has demanded that the net cancel the series or be blocked from the next election debates, and the Clinton camp could get “upset it’s being too tough on them,” lamented Todd. “We’re only going to own the negative.”

Upstart Aereo announced launch dates for Miami, Houston and Dallas starting next month. ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC lost early court battles claiming the service violates their copyrights, and have requested that Aereo pay them retransmission fees.  In July, Fox said in a statement the net would “determine the appropriate course of action, which include seeing a hearing the in the U.S. Supreme Court.” During CBS’s earnings call last month, CBS CEO Les Moonves called what Aereo was doing illegal, but “more wind than reality… We don’t think it’s catching on at all.”

Al-Jazeera America is adding NBC News vet John Seigenthaler to a stable of familiar on-air talent that includes Soledad O’Brien and Joie Chen. The news net launches Tuesday, August 20.

~ RETURNING SERIES ~

The next celebs to take a whirl on ABC‘s Dancing With the Stars will be revealed on Good Morning America Wednesday, September 4 at 7a. Not putting on their dancing shoes? E! reports Paula Deen and Geraldo Rivera have taken a pass. Dancing returns for season seventeen on Monday, September 16 at 8p.

The American Bible Challenge is coming back for season three. GSN has ordered nine episodes of the game show, hosted by Jeff Foxworthy. “Sometimes a show perfectly hits that sweet spot of exciting competition blended with real heart,” said Tom Forman, CEO of producer Relativity Television, “and that’s the story of American Bible Challenge.”

~ SYNDICATION NEWS ~

OK! TV, a syndicated entertainment magazine launching Monday, September 9, has announced its correspondents: former Miss USA Shandi Finnessy, Arizona talk show host Alex Miranda, former football player Ron Pitts, Julie Alexandria (MTV) and Mayleen Ramey (E!). The show is co-produced by Unconventional Partners and American Media (home to OK! Magazine, the National Enquirer and Soap Opera Digest) and syndicated by Trifecta Entertainment.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Shondaland has sold a police drama, the Miami-set story of an unorthodox detective and his new partner. Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers team with Dana Calvo for the ABC Studios project.

Drama Taxi: Brooklyn South has lined up a cast including Chyler Lee (Grey’s Anatomy), Jacky Ido (Inglorious Basterds), Jennifer Esposito (Blue Bloods) and Ally Walker (Profiler). TF1 and Eurocarp producers will be looking U.S. distribution when they have eps to show.

~ CASTING NEWS ~

Amber Tamblyn (House) recurs as Jenny, the illegitimate, lesbian daughter of the late Charlie Harper (Charlie Sheen), on season eleven of Two and a Half Men. “The show has had enough testosterone to last a lifetime,” said showrunner Chuck Lorre at the TCA. Series returns Saturday, September 26 at 9:30p.

Glenn Howerton (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) is guesting on season two of Fox sitcom The Mindy Project. He’ll play a mild-mannered lawyer. Season premiere is Tuesday, September 17 at 9p.

Kasha Kropinski, who plays Ruth on AMC western Hell on Wheels, has been upped from guest star to series regular. Third season premiere is Saturday, August 10 at 9p.

Tobias Menzies (Game of Thrones) will play dual roles in upcoming Starz series Outlander. Drama premieres in 2014.

Emma Lahana (Hellcats) and Christian Camargo (Dexter) have joined Syfy drama Haven as recurring guest stars. Season four of the series, based on a Stephen King novella, premieres Friday, September 13 at 10p.

Kathy Griffin will play herself on an episode of TVLand‘s upcoming Kirstie, starring Kirstie Alley. The sitcom bows Wednesday, December 4.

Jordana Spiro (Mob Doctor) has been cast in FX pilot Tyrant. She plays Dana, the wife of John Tucker (Justin Kirk).

Recurring player Uzo Aduba has gotten promoted to series regular as Orange Is the New Black‘s Crazy Eyes. The Netflix dramedy started filming season two last month, expected on air in 2014.

The August 6 premiere of GSN‘s new trivia game show, The Chase, brought the net a double digit bump (+55% in total viewers and +95% W18-49), with 511,000 viewers. “Our core audience loves trivia and the positive reaction both in ratings and online has been very gratifying,” GSN exec vp, programming and development Amy Introcase-Davis tells Cynopsis. “Viewers seem to really enjoy the high caliber of gameplay.”

Wednesday A18-49 Analysis:  NBC and FOX shared the top of the chart Wednesday night, each delivering a 1.7/5 among A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  At 8p, CBS’s Big Brother dominated with 2.2/8 to second place Univision’s 1.7/6 for Porque el Amor Manda. At 9p NBC’s Talent danced past FOX’s MasterChef, 2.5/8 to 2.2/7. But the 10p hour brought a three-way tie between Univision’s Que Bonito Amor, NBC’s Camp and CBS’s CSI, all with 1.1/3.

VH1 has named Susan Levison exec vp, original programming and production. She’ll oversee the net’s original programming and development, as well as celebrity talent development.

David Luner has been upped to exec vp, brand partnerships & franchise management at FremantleMedia North America. “In addition to developing and delivering quality programming, FMNA is focused on building long-term brands and brand partnerships,” said CEO Thom Beers, to whom Luner now reports.

Skydance Productions has promoted Dana Goldberg to chief creative officer. She’ll oversee creative development for TV and film.

NBCUniversal is beefing up it digital ad group, appointing Phil Cara and James Kreckler as senior vps, digital entertainment advertising sales, and Aaron Radin as senior vp, partnerships & portfolio products.

Charles Kennedy is NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment Group‘s new exec vp, research and insights. Liz Mahaffey takes on the role of exec vp, brand strategy.

Media investment company GroupM promoted Ruud Wanck to global chief operating officer.
