Cynopsis: DIGITAL
08/08/08
Good morning, it’s Friday, August 8, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Is the music industry finally beginning to dig itself out of the sinkhole brought on by Napster? Digital revenues increased nearly 40% year-over-year at Warner Music Group during the quarter ending June 30 to $166 million, making up 20% of the company’s total revenue intake. But CEO Edgar Bronfman Jr. thinks the company can do even better in the digital space. He complained in a conference call that Warner is helping to make music-themed console games like Activision’s Guitar Hero and Viacom’s Rock Band huge successes but seeing little in the way of compensation.
The New York Times is pulling out all the latest digital bells and whistles for its online Olympic Games coverage, devoting 20 staffers in the U.S. to keeping the content refreshed (in addition to two dozen Beijing Bureau members on the ground in China.) Check out the Olympics Tracker, allowing you to easily keep track of the events you’re interested in. It’s available as a web tool or a desktop application. The audio-driven After the Games feature is also very well done.
Yahoo!Telemundo is hoping to attract U.S. Hispanics in search of their Olympics fix. The site’s new Olympics portal features a full complement of news, photo galleries and video highlights (courtesy of the EFE news agency,) as well as social networking options with Flickr and Yahoo! Respuestas.
Brett Favre’s trade to the Jets has unleashed an interesting conundrum for gamers and sports fans: Is the Madden Curse broken or will it be spread to users around the net? Brett is the cover boy for EA Sports Madden NFL ’09 game, an infamous honor believed to be a certain curse for the player who appears. (Almost every cover player for the past decade has gotten injured or had a terrible season the year he is honored.) This season the game is shipping next week with Favre in a Packers uniform, and EA has pulled off some fast footwork to remedy the situation. Madden players will be able to log on to easports.com from Monday to download new cover art and a new roster update placing the legend on the team he belongs. If anyone can dodge the curse its Favre – he hasn’t missed a start in 253 games.
Cablevision’s music network Fuse is producing an exclusive Summer of Music series for the Xbox Live platform. The free offering, to be promoted via banner ads on Xbox Live and MSN Messenger, features artist interviews and festival coverage from the Bonnaroo, Rothbury, Mayhem, Vans Warped Tour and Bumbershoot music festivals.
Electronic Arts is rolling out a series of multiplatform games co-branded with the For Dummies name to teach players how to master popular games. The first in the series is Poker for Dummies, now available for download on EA’s Pogo.com.
Video metadata management company Gotuit announced a partnership with Move Networks integrating services to better define logical ad insertion points within video libraries. The Gotuit-Move solution will create an ad timing system to insert ads at strategic places within a clip using rich scene-level metadata. The idea is to improve engagement and enhance search functionality by enabling video to be indexed scene by scene. The Xtreme Outdoor Network is the first client to deploy the solution.
Coming to a bus or subway car near you is Brighter Living, a new short form show from Litton Entertainment featured on the out-of-home Transit TV network. Hosted by TV news veteran Jill Cordes, the daily one-minute reports offer advice toward living a more environmentally-conscious lifestyle through diet, home maintenance, community practices, etc. Transit TV is now available in Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, Orlando, Milwaukee and San Diego.
The beta version of Sling Media’s SlingPlayer 2.0 is now available for Windows PCs as a free download on the Sling site. The new software suite adds a bunch of new functions including a live video buffer for more DVR-like controls, an interactive player guide and multiple viewing modes and sizes allowing you to shrink the feed on your desktop. However the much-hyped Clip+Sling feature, allowing you to clip up to 5 minutes of video to share with friends online, is not a part of the beta.
For Olympics coverage with a stiffer upper lip download the BBC.com customizable widget, now available in a pre-games version. The widget highlights the top three Olympic news stories of the day giving users the option to choose from 12 different sports. Also listed are metal counts and top events of the day.

Perhaps picking up some of the 25,000 customers Dish Network lost, DirecTV posted higher than expected revenue growth as net profit rose to $455 million during Q2. The satellite provider reduced churn, added 129,000 net new subscribers and enjoyed healthy growth in Latin America. Average revenue per user also rose by 7%, thanks to HD and DVR signees.
General Mills has contracted with The Launch Crew to create and produce several new web series for a number of their brands. The first webisode of their premier series 350 Degrees for Betty Crocker is up now at Bettycrocker.com.
~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~
Web video analytics firm TubeMogul discovered about half of the 1,114 users who responded to a survey (in exchange for a free T-shirt) are now monetizing the web video they produce. They’re getting an average CPM of $12.39 (i.e. per 1,000 views,) with nearly one third of respondents claiming they sell their own ads into the videos. About half of the producers have joined revenue sharing programs, taking the occasional sponsorship deal when they can find it. Ad formats were fairly equally distributed between pre-roll (31.2%) post-roll (34.8%) and product placement (29.4%).
Former SVP/GM of WeatherBug Michael Rosen joined P2P entertainment site Babelgum as EVP and Chief Revenue Officer. He is based in the company’s New York office.
The National Hockey League upped John Collins to Chief Operating Officer. John will be responsible for the League’s communications and Club Consulting functions, in addition to continued oversight of the NHL’s business and media operations.
Twentysomething comedian and email columnist Aaron Karo admits he stole from Digg and Twitter when building his new user-generated humor blog Ruminations.com. It resembles Twitter in that contributors are limited to observations or anecdotes of 100 words or less. (Brevity, after all, is the soul of wit.) It’s Digg-like in the way most popular ruminations are pushed to the top. (Users click on “gourmet” when they like an entry, as in tasty.) You can also subscribe to your favorite feeds. Aaron is another one of those poster boys for using technology to promote his talents. While a student at Penn 10 years back he began jotting down funny stories then emailed them to a small thread of friends, who forwarded the writings to two more friends, and so on, and so on.
