Yesterday, Robin Roberts, co-anchor on ABC’s Good Morning America said Thursday would be her last day instead of today before she takes medical leave.  Roberts, who has a rare blood disorder, MDS is preparing for a bone marrow transplant.  Viewers can follows Roberts’ journey on the GMA website at: gma.yahoo.com/robin.

MTV revealed yesterday Jersey Shore will end its run following the upcoming sixth season.  Season six of Jersey Shore premieres on October 4 and production has already concluded.  MTV will air a retrospective special, Gym, Tan, Look Back prior to the MTV Video Music Awards on September 6.  Jersey Shore can be credited with being MTV’s most successful series ever.  Throughout its five seasons to date, Jersey Shore delivered consistently high ratings with the show peaking in late 2011 with close to 9 million viewers.  The most recent season opened to 7.6 million viewers.  Some Jersey Shore’s cast will remain with the network, as MTV recently renewed the spinoff series Snooki & JWoww which debuted with 2.4 million total viewers and posted a 1.1 rating with A18-49 in June. 

A second season of A&E Network’s Duck Dynasty will launch October 10 with back-to-back episodes at 10p and 1030p.  The series, produced by Gurney Productions, follows the Robertson’s of Louisiana, manufacturers of duck calls for the outdoor industry.

Public television executive, Robert Kotlowitz, 87, died last Saturday at his Manhattan home.  After leaving his job as managing editor of Harper’s Magazine, Mr. Kotlowitz was appointed SVP/Programming and Broadcasting at the country’s largest public television station, WNET/Channel 13 in New York.  Mr. Kotlowitz remained with Channel 13 until he retired in 1990.  During his time at Channel 13, Mr. Kotlowitz was the first to propose a half-hour evening news program featuring Jim Lehrer and Robert MacNeil in 1973 and two years later in December 1975, the show debuted as The MacNeil/Lehrer Report.  The program is now known as PBS NewsHour.  Mr. Kotlowitz is also credited with introducing other well-known programming to public television audiences such as the British series Brideshead Revisted, Monty Python’s Flying Circus, Bill Moyers Journal and Nature as well as live performances of the New York City Ballet and the New York Philharmonic.

Character actor, Steve Franken died last Friday in Los Angeles at the age of 80.  Mr. Franken’s television and film career spanned 50 years and he was best known for playing Chatsworth Osborne Jr. on the sitcom The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis.  He also appeared on other TV series such as Bewitched, Love, American Style, Mission: Impossible and Seinfeld among others.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Showtime is developing a comedy series based on the Slamdance Film Festival winner titled Punching the Clown from writer/director Gregori Viens, per THR.  The plot is about comic singer-songwriter Henry Phillips whose meteoric rise to Hollywood fame and fortune quickly subsides.  In the TV version, Phillips will be living with his struggling-actor brother and dealing with his romantic relationships.  Viens, Phillips and Chuck Martin (Arrested Development) will be writers and executive producers on the project with comedian Sarah Silverman and David Permut also on board as EPs. 

Writer/producer Craig Wright (Six Feet Under) inked a one-year pod deal with Fox 21.  Wright’s new deal with create cable projects and also manage other writers for Fox 21.

Kelen Coleman, recently seen in HBO’s The Newsroom, was cast in a recurring role on The CW’s Hart of Dixie for the series’ second season.  Coleman will portray Presley, a pretty tomboy beer distributor who catches George Tucker’s (Scott Porter) eye.

New Netflix series Orange Is the New Black cast Taylor Schilling (Mercy) in the lead role.  The one-hour dramedy is from Weeds creator Jenji Kohan and is being produced by Lionsgate TV.  Based on the book by Piper Kerman, the dramedy is about a Brooklyn woman who has a relationship with a drug-runner that results in her arrest and multi-year detention in a federal penitentiary.  There she finds herself in a women’s prison culture where she is accepted by an group of outspoken inmates.

~ INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS ~

Video technology company, FreeWheel is working with pay television provider British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB). FreeWheel’s Revenue & Payments Management (RPM) Advertiser system is being used by BSkyB and the product will allow BSkyB to organize its orders, reconcile payment terms with delivery and issue invoices to its advertisers and agencies across its various business units.  FreeWheel also announced the integration of its RPM technology with ad server ADTECH and Oracle’s enterprise resource planning software. Other international clients of FreeWheel include Channel 4, ESPN, Discovery International and Warner Music.

Entertainment reporters Jason Kennedy and Catt Sadler will become Co-Anchors of E! Entertainment’s E! News Weekend.  Additionally, Jason will be the host of E!
