Cynopsis: Sports
08.30.13

Good morning. It’s Friday, August 30, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

PBS may have to produce a new ending to its Frontline special on concussions in the NFL as the league announced a $765 million settlement with more than 4,500 former players who were part of the consolidated concussion-related lawsuits. If approved by the judge, the deal would fund medical and other benefits for the athletes, as well as offer compensation to qualifying injured players or their families. The settlement includes medical examinations, a fund of $675 million to compensate former, injured players or their families, and a $10 million research and education fund. Pundits were mixed on the news but tended to agree that the league came out well from the deal, with one publication noting that the $765 million is less than half of what ESPN pays the league to broadcast one season of Monday Night Football.

On the Air

Anyway, NBC Sports Group detailed plans to surround the 2013 NFL season with multi-platform coverage anchored, of course, by Sunday Night Football. Elements are set to include live streaming of SNF for desktops and tablets on NBC Sports Live Extra; daily studio coverage on NBCSN with Pro Football Talk; weekly programming on NBCSN with NFL Turning Point; daily radio coverage on 339 NBC Sports Radio affiliates; local team coverage on 11 NBC Sports Regional Networks and more. NFL Kickoff 2013 pits the Ravens/Broncos on Sept. 5 with pregame Football Night in America seeing Bob Costas reporting from Denver, and will be joined on site by Al Michaels, Cris Collinsworth, and Hines Ward. Dan Patrick co-hosts Football Night at Mile High on Thursday night and will be joined throughout the season by Tony Dungy, Rodney Harrison, Peter King, Mike Florio and Scott Pioli.

Speaking of Dan Patrick, Sirius XM Radio revealed that it has added The Dan Patrick Show to the weekday lineup of shows on its all-sports talk channel, Mad Dog Sports Radio, SiriusXM channel 86. Programming begins Tuesday, September 3 from 9a to noon.

Tennis Channel celebrates the life and career of Hall of Fame tennis journalist, broadcaster, personality and historian Bud Collins with Signature Series: Bud Collins during the network’s coverage of the 2013 US Open. The latest installment of the documentary franchise is narrated by Selig and debuts Monday, Sept. 2 at 6p.

The UFC is planting its Prelims on FS1. UFC President Dana White told reporters that from now on, all televised preliminary bouts will run on the new sports channel, which fared well with the programming upon its debut. The Prelims had generally been slated to run for FS2.

The debut of FS1’s FOX College Saturday this weekend at 10a will see Stanford coach David Shaw appear live in-studio throughout the debut episode. Shaw joins hosts Erin Andrews and Joel Klatt and analysts Eddie George, Petros Papadakis, Mike Pereira and Clay Travis to discuss the Cardinal’s upcoming season as well as the top storylines from the world of college football.

BTN kicked off its college football season last night, with a full slate of games set for Saturday starting at 11a with BTN Football Pregame, followed by UMass/Wisconsin and Southern Illinois/Illinois at noon. Afternoon matchups will include Central Michigan/Michigan and Northern Illinois/Iowa at 3:30p. Wyoming/Nebraska at 8p completes the trifecta, with The Final Drive following the action. The network’s 2013 football schedule will see a network-high 47 games, including 12 in prime time.

Pac-12 Networks will offer a special first look of its new docu-series The Drive on Thursday, Sept.5, following Arizona State’s home opener against Sacramento State. The Drive is a 14-part docu-series offering a look inside the 2013 football season of the Arizona State Sun Devils and University of California Golden Bears and their quest for the Pac-12 Championship. The preview will see 12-minutes of the show to set the stage for the season.

The New Jersey Devils extended their radio partnership with WFAN Sports Radio 66 AM and 101.9 FM in a new multi-year agreement. The all-sports station will continue to broadcast the team’s regular and post-season games as well as pre- and post-game shows.

Sponsorship & Promotion

The Heisman House is back on the block. For the third straight year, Nissan and ESPN are teaming for the campaign, which imagines what it might be like if the winners of the Heisman Trophy lived together in the same house. The Nissan Heisman House is back ahead of the college football season and stars 13 Heisman trophy winners, with an interactive website and a real-life Heisman House Tour that will travel to college campuses throughout the season. The website and vignettes debut on August 31 and features returning members Robert Griffin III, Barry Sanders, Ty Detmer, Ron Dayne, Matt Leinart, Troy Smith, Tim Brown, Carson Palmer and Desmond Howard. This year’s spots will also introduce newcomers Sam Bradford, Earl Campbell, Tony Dorsett and Mike Rozier to the roster of housemates.

The 2014 Special Olympics USA Games announced that STS Tire and Auto Centers will serve as a Silver Level Partner and will be the Presenting Sponsor of the 2014 USA Games Athletics Competition at Weaver Stadium on the campus of Princeton University. As Presenting Sponsor of Athletics, STS will be recognized throughout Weaver Stadium as well as in all external communications.

Digital & Technology

NCAA.com, managed by Turner Sports, opens the 2013 college football season with a “fully interactive online and mobile experience” that will offer highlights from top games, weekly video franchises and the return of GameCenter, a live stats companion.  Every week, fans will have complete access to game recaps, stats, rankings, photos and social chatter. Additional content will include the NCAA.com Power Rankings, Three-Point Stance (spotlighting the top three FBS and FCS storylines of the week.) and predictions from NCAA.com analyst Dave Archer.

MaxPreps.com is prepping a slate of new sites dedicated to hyper-local high schools sports coverage of 40 metro areas across the country. The site’s national data and content will now be available to high school sports fans on the city level across digital platforms. Metro areas launching over the next four weeks include launches in New York, Dallas, LA, Denver, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Atlanta, Seattle and more.

Roster Moves

The UFC hired Tracey Bleczinski to serve as Senior Vice President of Consumer Products for the organization. Bleczinski joins from the NFL and will now lead UFC’s consumer products and apparel division with an eye to develop a long-term global licensing, merchandising, and product strategy for UFC’s growing international footprint.

Rhys Beer joined NBCUniversal International Television Distribution in the newly created position of Vice President, Sports Distribution & Business Development where he is charged with leading and implementing growth opportunities and revenue generation through the sales of NBCUniversal’s existing sports programming, developing a strategy to grow NBCU’s sports rights portfolio and grow its syndication business, in addition to identifying strategic partnerships outside of North America.

Dave Munroe joined WFN: World Fishing Network as Director of Affiliate Marketing, where he will be responsible for the development of all partner marketing programs with US-based affiliates. Munroe recently served as the national account manager for National CineMedia.

The Main Event, the featured game of the day sponsored by Thuuz, real-time sports discovery for mobile & connected TV platforms.
#5 Georgia Bulldogs vs. #8 Clemson Tigers
Saturday, 8p. Thuuz rating: 90
The loser of this game has their BCS Title hopes basically dashed right out of the gate. So yeah, this is a big deal. On ABC.
