FOX‘s candid chairman of entertainment, Kevin Reilly, got a few things off his chest at the TCA on Thursday, including his frustration with the way viewership is measured given the sea changes in television. “Overnight [ratings] are a marker of success, but they’re becoming only a sliver of the story,” he said, pointing to the rise On Demand, Hulu and DVR viewership. The attention heaped on cable shows also chafed – Reilly said that while cable series might be media darlings these days, “You would have to play Portlandia 12 times to get the ratings of New Girl.”

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Reilly also discussed FOX’s search to replace Mike Darnell. When the colorful president of alternative programming departed the net in May after 18 years, he left big shoes to fill – and plenty of people have been trying them on. “There’s been absolutely no shortage [of applicants],” said Reilly. “Just about everybody has thrown their hat in the ring.” Reilly added that he expects a replacement to be named soon, but “Mike’s a legend. He’ll be missed.”

Netflix promises that shows it recommends for adult subscribers will no longer include content meant for kids in the house. Or vice versa.  A new profiles feature on the Internet net, which provides show suggestions based on past viewing, will allow five separate profiles for each subscriber at no extra cost. “Now everyone in your home can have their own Netflix experience, built around TV shows and movies they enjoy,” said Netflix chief product officer Neil Hunt.

Valerie Harper announced in March that she’d been diagnosed with a rare form of terminal brain cancer that could leave her with just months to live. So word that Harper, 73, has begun production on a UP movie, The Town That Came A-Courtin’, was very good news. ‘When I learned that the remarkable Valerie Harper was interested in working, I was so excited because that meant she was doing well,” UP svp of original programming Barbara Fisher tells Cynopsis. “There was a perfect role in our movie as the wise and witty friend and advisor – who better than Valerie Harper to play that? We are thrilled to have this iconic talent in our film and awed by her determination to live each day to the fullest  she truly is an inspiration.”

A clever Twitter account landed one writer a job, says the Hollywood Reporter. Jack Moore‘s @seinfeldtoday account, with 620,00 followers including Seinfeld star Jason Alexander tracking his ideas for modern Seinfeld plots, caught the eye of the folks at FOX’s upcoming sitcom Us & Them and led to job on staff. “I was basically pitching storylines,” said Moore (sample: Kramer is addicted to Candy Crush, but suspects one of the levels is impossible to beat. “They’re modern day carnies, Jerry! It’s a con!”), “which is a huge part of being on a writing staff.” Us & Them bows midseason.

What if you threw a party and Warren Buffett came? The investment guru showed up on the red carpet for an event in NYC on July 31 celebrating Breaking Bad‘s final season on AMC. “It’s surprisingly light on set,” said Aaron Paul, who got a hug from the unexpected guest.

MTV is airing a special Justin Bieber moment every hour for the 24 hours leading up to its Saturday, August 3 premiere airing of the film Justin Bieber: Never Say Never at 8p. Net promises “vintage” Bieber moments, exclusive messages from the singer, and stories from family and friends.

FOX is making it easy to play catch-up on series like Glee, Bones and New Girl by making recent seasons of nine shows available on Fox On Demand. Series will also be streamed online at Fox.com and through the FOX NOW app. Five or six eps will be released every Sunday starting August 11, through September.

Great minds think alike? Kids are getting busy in the kitchen on two nets. On Food Network, celeb chefs Rachael Ray and Guy Fieri mentor talented junior chefs on Rachael vs. Guy: Kids Cook-Off. Meanwhile over at FOX, on cooking competish MasterChef Junior, 24 mini-cooks demonstrate their skills for judges Gordon Ramsay (Hell’s Kitchen), restaurateur Joe Bastianich and chef Graham Elliot. Cook-Off premieres Sunday, September 8 at 8p; MasterChef Junior bows Friday, September 27 at 8p.

The only American Idol judge left standing after a season that was a critical and ratings disappointment isn’t going anywhere. “Keith [Urban] is going to return to the show,” FOX chief Kevin Reilly revealed at the TCA. “The fans really like him.” That leaves at least two spots to fill, with Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj out after just one season of squabbling, and Randy Jackson taking his leave after twelve. Reilly said the show is looking for “some comfortable judges to make it comfortable to view.”

Turning to Glee, Reilly confirmed that the late Corey Monteith‘s Glee character, Finn, will be written out in the show’s third episode. “That episode will deal directly with the incidents involved with Cory’s passing and the drug abuse in particular,” said Reilly (Monteith was found dead of a drug overdose on July 13). In addition, the cast will film public service announcements that “speak directly to the audience.” Season five of the series premieres Thursday, September 26 at 9p, a week later than originally scheduled. As for season six, Reilly told the Hollywood Reporter it would probably be the show’s last. “If we discover a new crop of kids and there’s some breakout, who knows,” he hedged. “But right now we’re thinking about two seasons.”

Discovery Channel is getting creative with its 26th annual Shark Week (“It’s a bad week to be a seal”). Guests for the stunt’s late-night after-show include entrepreneur Mark Cuban (star of ABC‘s Shark Tank); Lost alum Dominic Monaghan (star of BBC America‘s Wild Things With Dominic Monaghan), and Sharknado darling Tara Reid. Shark Week launches Sunday, August 4.

Dish Network subscribers were blocked out of Raycom Media‘s 53 stations in 36 markets, including Tucson, Toledo and Cleveland, on midnight Wednesday when the companies couldn’t come to terms on retransmission fees. “We are ready to listen to a fair proposal from Raycom to bring this impasse to a swift end,” said Sruta Vootukuru, Dish director of programming. “Unfortunately the broadcaster has not been willing to pursue an agreement that would have avoided this disruption of service.”

Fusion, the upcoming net geared toward Latinos and millennials from ABC and Univision, announced that former Daily Show exec producer/head writer David Javerbaum will oversee the net’s nightly block of comedy/satire, while Jorge Ramos and Leon Krauze lead the news block. “We believe our programs will resonate with Latinos and non-Latinos alike,” said Beau Ferrari, acting president. “Fusion’s unique combination of new, satire and original series is a completely new offering.” Launch date is Monday, October 28.

Ten years after the FCC rejected a DirecTVDish merger, DirecTV CEO Michael White said in an investor call that he’s open to giving it another try. “The competitive landscape is very different than it was ten years ago,” he pointed out. “The balance between content distributors and providers is out of whack… something is going to have to give.”

Oh, Mr. Grant! SAG-AFTRA filed a motion to dismiss a lawsuit by former SAG pres Ed Asner and 15 others that accuses the union of financial misconduct involving its unclaimed residuals and foreign royalties programs. The motion claims, “This is not the ‘big’ case the plaintiffs portray. At most it is a speculative claim by no more than 17 of the 160,000 member of SAG-AFTRA that they may be owed a small amount of money.”

~ RETURNING SERIES ~

The contestants on Syfy reality series Face Off, a competition between makeup artists, are in for an ugly surprise: Among the entrants will be hopefuls from past seasons, eager for another chance at victory. Fifth season challenges include creating a futuristic Frankenstein and his bride, and a Mother Earth goddess inspired by the contestants’ mothers. Season premiere is Tuesday, August 13 at 9p.

Syfy has picked up time-traveling drama Continuum for 13 eps in 2014. Current season finale is Friday, August 30 at 10p.

The bridezillas are back: WEtv has greenlit a second season of Marriage Boot Camp: Bridezillas, to premiere in 2014. Series shows former Bridezillas trying to save their shaky marriages; the season one finale delivered 837,000 total viewers.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE & CLEARANCE ~

Participant Media‘s cable net Pivot has been added to the AT&T U-verse TV U300 package, on channel 1492 in HD. Geared to A18-34, Pivot features original and acquired programming, films and docs intended to “spark conversation, inspire change and illuminate issues.”

~ PRODUCTION & DISTRIBUTION ~

FOX has placed a series order for crime drama Broadchurch (working title), about the mysterious death of a young boy. The show will be a version of the U.K. drama that drew over 10 million total viewers to its season finale on ITV. BBC America debuts the Brit version here on Wednesday, August 7; its U.S. cousin won’t air until the 2014-2015 season.

Former 20th Century Fox chief Tom Rothman is starting TriStar Productions for Sony Pictures Entertainment. The unit will produce films as well as television programming for Sony Pictures Television. “Tom is a rare executive who loves movies, loves filmmakers, understands how to make money and has exquisite taste,” said SPE co-chairman Amy Pascal. “He has the perfect programming sensibility to add to our slate mix.”

The Longest Date found someone who wants to commit: FOX has picked up the sitcom for pilot production. The show is based on Cindy Chupack‘s upcoming memoir, The Longest Date: Life As a Wife, to be released in January 2014; Chupack will write and exec produce.

~ CASTING NEWS ~

Hart of Dixie has tapped Dexter‘s Josh Cooke (Louis Greene) for a recurring role on the CW medical drama. Cooke plays Joel, a New Yorker out of place in Bluebell. Hart of Dixie’s season three premieres Monday, October 7 at 8p.

Mary Lynn Rajskub returns to the 24 franchise as CTU systems analyst Chloe O’Brian for FOX‘s 24: Live Another Day, premiering in spring 2014. “There’s a lot more room to grow my character,” says Rajskub. “I’m sharpening my computer skills now!”

~ INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS ~

Media mogul and former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi was convicted of tax fraud on Thursday and sentenced to one year in jail. It’s expected the 76-year-old will dodge prison time, but he could be put under house arrest.
