Average viewer results from the third night of the Democratic National Convention per Nielsen and as reported by TV Week during the 10p hour, which featured a speech by Democratic Vice Presidential nominee Joe Biden, had NBC first at 5.46 million, followed closely by CNN at 5.38 million, CBS 3.54 million, ABC 3.48 million, FOX News just a little under 2.70 million and MSNBC at 2.27 million. Also per Nielsen, the combined total viewer number during 10p from eight networks offering live coverage: ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, BET and TV One declined from Tuesday night’s number to 24.0 million. The combined total among A18-49 viewers also decreased slightly to nearly 8.2 million.

Nielsen released a report showing the number of U.S. television households for the 2008-2009 season has increased to 114.5 million, up by 1.5% from the previous year. The number of Persons 2+ also has reached an estimated 290 million, which represents an increase of 1.3%. In addition, Nielsen reported Asian TV households increased by 4.4%, Hispanics households by 4.3% and African-American by 2.2% over the previous year, while Persons 55+ increased by 2.7%. Furthermore, Nielsen noted that for the first time in a decade there were no rank changes within the top 20 local markets. Within the top 50 local markets there were a few changes: Austin is #49 up from #51; Indianapolis moves up to #25 from #26; and Las Vegas is now #42 up from #43.

HBO debuts the U.S. version of Little Britain USA on September 28 at 1030p, following new episodes of the comedy Entourage. Little Britain USA, with six episodes, is written by Matt Lucas and David Walliams, who starred in the UK/Australia edition and will continue to portray a variety of characters, some new and some from the original version, in all-new sketches. The show will also feature several celebrities making cameo appearances including Sarah Chalke, Vivica A. Fox, Geraldine James, Harry Lennix, Rosie O’Donnell, Paul Rudd and Sting.

Bravo’s finale of Shear Genius on Wednesday at 10p delivered 1.64 million A18-49 viewers as well as 2.54 million total viewers.

This week, Time Warner Cable in Kansas City added the Hallmark Movie Channel in both standard-def and hi-def versions.


CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: In what could help to set a precedence in other video streaming cases, a federal judge in San Jose let Veoh Networks off the hook for presenting copyrighted material on its site uploaded by users. The lawsuit was originally brought by adult entertainment company IO Group, but was thrown out on the grounds that Veoh is protected under safe harbor provisions of the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Both Google and Viacom, still knee deep in their own litigation, weighed in on the decision. Google quickly applauded the ruling, reiterating its belief that the DMCA protects video sharing sites from liability. Viacom claimed the ruling does nothing to change the fact that YouTube’s business model is built on copyright infringement – “conduct that is not protected by any law, including the DMCA.” Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Disney Channel picks up additional episodes for the second season of its comedy Wizards of Waverly Place.  Currently in production in Hollywood, Wizards of Waverly Place was created by Todd Greenwald (Hannah Montana) and executive produced by Peter Murrieta (Greetings from Tucson, Hope & Faith), Greenwald, Vince Cheung and Ben Montanio (both 0f Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior) for It’s a Laugh Productions, Inc.  The series is televised around the world on 27 Disney Channels and begins rolling out on terrestrial broadcasters in September 2008, with full episodes available on‘s broadband player, on VOD, on mobile platforms, iTunes, Xbox and onboard airlines.  Full edition: CYN KIDS.

CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  In Canada, Rogers Media is rebranding its channel m diversity broadcaster to be the new Rogers OMNI British Columbia as of September 1.  The biggest changes will appear on the weekend schedule with OMNI’s new station-wide scheduling of subtitled series Chinese Super Cinema (Saturdays at 8p PT) and South Asian Bollywood Freetime Movie (Sundays at 3p). Programming will continue to air in 22 languages and 55 hours per week of local programming.  Regular newscasts will stay in their regular slots but under the new OMNI News: Language Edition name. Back to Sundays, OMNI BC viewers will now see OMNI Language Doc Specials at 10a PT in non-official languages and in English on OMNI Signature Series at 8p.  Another new Rogers OMNI Television family member, Rogers OMNI Alberta (CJCO in Calgary and CJEO in Edmonton) will launch September 15.  Full edition: CYN INTERNATIONAL.


Wednesday – A18-49 Analysis:  NBC held steady in first place Wednesday night at 2.3/7 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen Media Research. The two-hour America’s Got Talent on NBC swept past the competition at 8p with 2.5/8 and retained top ratings through 9p with 2.9/8. NBC’s live coverage of the Democratic Convention remained in the lead at 1.5/4, while ABC’s and CBS’ political coverage tied again at 0.9/3 apiece.
