Good morning. It’s Friday, August 27, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing, coming to you live from sunny downtown Burbank.
Wednesday night’s coverage of the 2004 Olympic Games drew an 8.0/23 A18-49 rating for NBC according to Nielsen Media Research, with an average of 23.3 million viewers. Fox was #2 for the night with a mild 2.3/7 for four episodes (all repeats) of Family Guy. UPN’s Amish in the City and The Player, both original episodes, drew a soft 1.2/4 for the night among A18-49, though improved among Teens 12-17 with a 1.4/5. At 10pm, CBS 48 Hours (also a repeat) earned a 2.7/7, while ABC’s In the Jury Room has struggled to find its audience, posting a 1.6/4 A18-49.
While Fox’s The O.C.‘s fall season premiere isn’t scheduled until November 4, two 1-hour OTO specials of the series on two nights in September — the 16th and the 23rd. According to Variety, one of the specials will take a look at The O.C.’s impact on its viewers via fashion trends, music, language, etc. The second special will provide some up close and personal on the key cast members.
Projects in Development:
The rumor mill has put together CBS and Tommy Hilfiger as a possible duet for a 13-ep reality series from Lions Gate Television. No other information available at this point ….
WB has given the go ahead for a comedy pilot called True, contingent on the eventual cast decisions made by Warner Bros. TV.
Bravo is reported in chats to go forward with a new reality series starring the one and only, often in the news and rarely in a good way, Bobby Brown. What if any involvement Brown’s wife, Whitney Houston, will have in the project.
After a handful of years starring in syndicated drama series, actor Kevin Sorbo has signed a development deal with ABC for an upcoming sitcom. Sorbo’s current series, Gene Roddenberry’s Andromeda, is about to begin its final season.

Turner International Asia Pacific (an AOL Time Warner company) is asking India’s Zee Telefilms to join forces to build an international sports channel. Turner’s proposal has been received and is being pondered according to both parties. Two interesting things to note… Zee is currently the highest bidder ($260 million offer) in the race for the Board for Control of Cricket in India’s (BCCI) cricket television broadcast rights for the next 4 years. Zee has already partnered with Turner International India on Zee Tuner Pvt Ltd. for TV channels and has mentioned that they do plan to start up a global sports channel centering on telecasted cricket matches to worldwide markets (i.e., Middle East, South Africa, the UK and the US).
According to NY Times’ Stuart Elliott, you can plan on seeing much more of the Energizer Bunny and Morris the Cat in upcoming campaigns that will introduce these two branding icons to a whole new generation of viewer. You’ll begin seeing both on Monday, and include television spots as well as reach into other arenas including print, outdoor, etc.
As you cut down on all those carbs, do you feel even the slightest twinge of guilt that Krispy Kreme Doughnuts are off from last year by 56% in second quarter? For four years you’ve been eatin’ up those doughnuts as if carbs were your friends, and now just look at them. You’ll be glad to know Krispy Kreme doesn’t blame you entirely; it also blames the souring gas prices and grocery stores sales down in light of nearby Wal-Mart prices.

Friday Fun Fact: In 1910, a football team was penalized 15 yards for an incomplete forward pass.
The History Channelpresents This Day in History: 1776: British forces under General William Howe defeat Continental forces under General George Washington at the Battle of Brooklyn in New York. The Continentals, defeated and outflanked in Brooklyn Heights, were able to retreat to Manhattan days later. Washington’s retreat lost the battle and, ultimately, New York, but preserved his army to continue the Revolutionary War.
Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question: Early in Phyllis Diller’s career as the first female stand-up comic, she did her comedy in a burlesque house. The question is, what famous writer was a burlesque dancer at the same club during the same time? The Purple Onion was not technically a burlesque house, but a night club with go-go dancers. One of those go-go dancers was none other than MAYA ANGELOU! Kudos to: Jeffrey Tuchman-Documania Films/NY; Kristen Liebmann-MediaEdge/Atlanta; Fay Yu-BBC America/NY.
Today’s Trivia Question: This futuristic police officer played by Rex Smith was assigned to drive a super secret pursuit vehicle. What was the name of the vehicle (also the title of this ABC series)? (click hereto respond to the trivia question and please be sure to include with your answer your name, company, city and time zone. Only the second four correct responses from each time zone will be listed in tomorrow’s kudo list.)
