Cyn opsis: Kids!
08/25/06
Good morning. It’s Friday, August 25, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
The Children’s Advertising Review Unit (CARU), a self-regulating ad industry group, informed Warner Bros. that it should not have run ads for the movie Superman Returns, during its Saturday morning kids TV programming block, due to the movie’s PG-13 rating, per the Associated Press. Underlining that it did not think the ads were in keeping with its guideline by airing PG-13 rated films during children’s programming, the advertiser is substituting its judgment for that of the parents, according to the report. On the flip side, Warner Bros. defended itself explaining that a PG-13 movie rating means that a kid under 13 should not see the movie unaccompanied by an adult, not that they shouldn’t see it at all. Warner Bros. does not plan to alter how it makes decisions about movie advertisement placement.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Sony plans to re-release the 3D version of its CGI animated movie Monster House for a two-week run, on 100 3D screens, beginning October 6, 2006. The re-release will come just before the movie is released on DVD, toward the end of October and closer to Halloween.
Having completed competitive review, LeapFrog Enterprises, Inc. has appointed TBWAChiatDay, LA as its new advertising agency responsible for the LeapFrog brand.
Radio KOL, AOL’s kid-targeted radio show, has partnered with NASA to present NASA Women in Aerospace, a special broadcast set for August 28, 2006. Dr. Sally Ride, the first female astronaut, will take part in the special that is designed to encourage girls’ interest in space/science and explore what kind of careers are available to them and how to get involved. The program will include listener calls and will feature discussions with others women who work in the space and science fields. Radio KOL airs weekday’s 3-7p.
Entertainment Rights company, Entara Limited has established an in-house distribution unit as part of the company’s effort to extend its reach globally. Entara recently acquired the rights to the CGI animated series, Those Scurvy Rascals, and plans to support with a multi-platform campaign. Initially developed by the UK based animation house, Blue Zoo, and which is currently producing 26 episodes of Those Scurvy Rascals. Entara developed and owns the preschool series Jakers! The Adventures of Piggley Winks.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Busch Entertainment Corporation (BEC), the family focused subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc., has entered into a long-term multi-pronged deal with Sesame Workshop, making BEC its exclusive US theme park partner. Under the pact Sesame Workshop will create fixed Sesame Street-themed attractions in four of BEC’s US parks: SeaWorld California and Texas, and Busch Gardens Africa (Florida.), and Busch Gardens Europe (Virginia). The first of these attractions is expected top open in 2008. The deal will also see the Sesame Street characters make appearances at SeaWorld Florida in Orlando beginning in 2007. Additionally, Sesame Workshop has extended BEC’s license to feature Sesame Street characters in its Sesame Place theme park.
RC2 Corporation has completed two new exclusive Thomas & Friends worldwide licensing agreements with HIT Entertainment. Warner Bros. Consumer Products has entered into a worldwide licensing deal with Lucien Pellat-Finet, an apparel fashion company, to develop men’s, women’s and kid’s cashmere sweaters and scarves inspired by the characters and world of The Flintstones. The Flintstones cashmere line is set to debut this fall-winter 2006, and will feature the Flintstones characters including Bam Bam, Pebbles, and Dino. The Flintstones-themed apparel products will be available at 200 retail stores around the world, as well as in Lucien Pellat-Finet’s four boutiques (Paris, NY, Tokyo and Kobe).
