Good morning. It’s Friday, August 24, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

An injury to MMA fighter Dan Henderson has caused UFC to scrap the entire UFC 151 card. The event was set to take place on Sept. 1 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. UFC President Dana White announced the cancellation of the PPV yesterday during a media teleconference. White said he tried to save the card but was unable to find an acceptable replacement with only eight days’ notice.

“This is probably one of my all-time lows as president of the UFC in the last 11 years,” he said. “For the first time in 11 years, we’re going to cancel an event.”

On the Air

On the radio front, Dial Global and NBC Sports Radio signed Rodney Harrison to host a two-hour weekend NFL talk show for NBC Sports Radio. The show, called Safety Blitz with Rodney Harrison, will debut on the weekend of September 8th. In addition to his weekend program, Harrison will also be featured during the week with live guest appearances on other NBC Sports Radio talk shows. Harrison will also continue to serve as an analyst for NBC Sports’ Football Night in America.

CBS Sports Radio added a pair of names to upcoming sports network team. In addition to the likes of Boomer Esiason and Doug Gottlieb, the radio network will reportedly also be adding John Feinstein and Tom Tolbert to the crew where they will help deliver the CBS Sports Minute updates near the top of the hour starting Sept. 4 from 6a-7p.

CONCACAF is making Fútbol de Primera (FDP) the exclusive Spanish-language radio broadcaster in the US for the 2013 and 2015 editions of CONCACAF Gold Cup. FDP has carried the Gold Cup since 2007, and will deliver the events to more than 100-affiliated stations.

Back to TV. ESPN International and The FA locked in a six-year multimedia agreement for rights in South America for the FA Cup, England’s men’s national team and men’s U-21 team matches, as well as the annual FA Community Shield match. The deal includes rights across television, internet, broadband and mobile. The 2012-2013 season begins Saturday, November 3 and, as part of the deal, ESPN International will carry up to 59 FA Cup matches per season.

Paterno author Joe Posnanski, will to join Bob Costas on the latest edition of Costas Tonight, set to run on Wednesday, August 29 at 9p on NBC Sports Network. In addition to the Posnanski interview, Costas Tonight will also feature never-before-seen footage that Costas conducted with convicted child molester Jerry Sandusky from Rock Center with Brian Williams on November 14, 2011.

The NBC Sports Group’s Summer at Saratoga horse racing programming Saratoga Race Course continues Saturday at 4p on NBC with coverage of the 143rd running of the Grade 1, $1 million Travers as well as the Grade 1, $500,000 Foxwoods King’s Bishop, the Grade 1, $500,000 Test and the Grade 2, $250,000 Ballston Spa. Laffit Pincay, III hosts NBC’s coverage alongside Gary Stevens and Randy Moss.

New international sports channel beIn SPORT continues to add distribution, inking a deal to be carried on Xfinity TV by Comcast. beIN SPORT will be available in Spanish on the Xfinity TV MultiLatino Package as well as in English on the Xfinity TV Sports Entertainment Package.

NBC will carry 90-minutes of live coverage of the America’s Cup World Series on Sunday starting at 2:30p from San Francisco. Sunday’s broadcast will feature the match racing final and fleet racing final. The San Francisco race marks the first leg of the 2012-2013 America’s Cup World Series. Todd Harris will serve as the play-by-play commentator and will be joined in the booth by Gary Jobson. In addition, Comcast SportsNet California will carry six hours of live race coverage of the America’s Cup World Series through Saturday. John Rawling, Mitch Booth and Gary Jobson will serve as the telecast team for the regional network.

Integrated Sports Media announced that several CONCACAF World Cup qualifying matches in the fight for a spot in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil will be available on PPV. Coverage is set to include games featuring the national teams of Jamaica, Guatemala, Honduras, Cuba, El Salvador, Guyana and Antigua & Barbuda. Action starts on Friday, Sept. 7.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim outfielder Torii Hunter will be featured in the second episode of MLB Productions’ four-part series My MLB Life that runs on MLB Network on Saturday at 3:30p. On the episode, the camera crew followed Hunter this past February for the start of Angels’ Spring Training.

ESPN’s news magazine E:60 will make its Fall 2012 season premiere on Tuesday, Aug. 28 at 7p with an episode that features Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson, Rutgers’ Jamil Pollard, the first recruit to commit to Penn State in the wake of the Sandusky scandal; as well as a look at U.S. Women’s soccer goalkeeper and two-time Olympic gold medalist Hope Solo.

With the controversial Roger Clemens back on the mound, ESPN will feature multiplatform coverage of his start with the Sugar Land Skeeters on Saturday, Aug. 25, at 8:05p. As part of the programming, SportsCenter on ESPNEWS will cut-in live to every inning Clemens pitches. In addition, the entire game will be available live on ESPN3 as well as ESPN Classic. Longhorn Network’s Kevin Dunn handles play-by-play with guest analyst Danny Graves.

CBS Sports announced plans to showcase Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day on Sunday, Aug. 26 at noon. The exhibition will feature some of tennis’ greatest players, as well as pop-vocal sensation The Wanter, singer Carly Rae Jepsen, special guest performer Owl City as well as Nickelodeon’s Cymphonique Miller and Max Schneider. Novak Djokovic, John Isner, Kim Clijsters and Mardy Fish are among the players scheduled to participate in the exhibition. The exhibition will hosted by AAKD alumnus Jordin Sparks and Quddus.

Time Warner Cable SportsNet and Time Warner Cable Deportes are partnering with the Lakers on a series of community clinics that will take place around Southern California in the coming months. The clinics, dubbed Los Lakercitos Basketball Clinics, will include basketball instruction, prizes and promotional items for the pre-selected participants.

Pantech and integrated marketing agency CSE announced that social media efforts for Pantech Wireless at the title-sponsored Pantech Beach Championships — the first of three events encompassing the 2012 Dew Tour  fueled increases of nearly 5000% in impressions, 870% in engaged users and 44% in total reach on Pantech’s Facebook page versus the previous week. The next Dew Tour event is scheduled for Oct. 18-21 in San Francisco.

KPMG, official hat sponsor of professional golfer Phil Mickelson, launched a new social media contest, dubbed Where Is The Blue Hat Taking You? The campaign will center on Mickelson’s new blue hat in an effort to raise awareness of the importance of literacy. As part of the promotion, fans to be able to wear the same hat Mickelson wears on the PGA Tour and after submitting photos via Twitter, fans will have the opportunity  to meet the golf champion in San Diego at the Monday Night Football game.

Mobovivo and AXS TV released the AXS TV Fights iPhone and iPad Companion App, which will allow fans the ability to find out more about their favorite MMA athletes, as well as chat with fighters, hosts and other fans and vote on fight results.
