CBS cut a deal with Verizon Fios for three more years of carriage of CBS-owned stations – as CBS’s retransmission fee standoff with Time Warner Cable continues. “This important deal was reached swiftly and amicably in just a few days after our conversations began,” CBS chairman Leslie Moonves said in a staff memo. “You should know that Time Warner Cable has been offered almost exactly the same deal.” He added, “Never in my most pessimistic moments did I ever think that [TWC] would have lasted this long and have been so difficult… I am frankly mystified by what appears to be a lack of urgency to resolve this matter for their customers.” In a statement likely aimed at those customers, Verizon’s Terry Denson, VP of video content and strategy, issued a statement saying, “We’ve reached this agreement in partnership with CBS for our customers, so that they may continue to enjoy CBS content on Fios.”

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

The 50th anniversary of the historical March on Washington will be covered live on BET, with Ed Gordon anchoring coverage and interviewing trailblazing political figures and activists. Gordon tells Cynopsis, “The march was a seminal moment in American history, and included arguably the greatest civil rights speech of all time,” says the award-winning journalist. “To be able to salute men like Andrew Young and John Lewis is an honor.” BET’s coverage starts Saturday, August 24 at 11a.

In week three of the retransmission fee dispute between CBS and Time Warner Cable, the two have called a truce long enough to air debates in two New York City political races. TWC agreed to carry the WCBS-sponsored Democratic primary election for controller on Thursday night; if the companies are still in a stand-off, TWC will also air the Republican primary mayoral debate on Wednesday, August 28 and the Democratic mayoral debate on Monday, September 23.

House of Cards star Kevin Spacey offered tough talk about the television industry at the Guardian Edinburgh Television Festival on Thursday. “The success of the Netflix model  releasing the entire season of House of Cards at once – has proved one thing: the audience wants control,” said Spacey in a lecture. “Through this new form of distribution, we have learned a lesson that the music industry didn’t: Give the people what they want, when they want it, in the form they want it in, at a reasonable price, and they’ll more likely pay for it than steal it.”

Elisabeth Hasselback‘s debut as co-host on Fox New Channel‘s Fox & Friends is set for September 16. When Hasselback left her perch on ABC‘s The View in July, she said she felt well-prepared for her new job, having “attended the Barbara Walters school of broadcasting and journalism.”

Music producer Jimmy Iovine is leaving American Idol, where he served as talent mentor for three seasons. Deadline reports Iovine could be replaced by departed judge Randy Jackson. Season thirteen of Idol premieres in January.

Despite a press release announcing an Entertainment One/Nu Image agreement to develop a TV series based on the Rambo franchise that might involve Sylvester Stallone reprising the action anti-hero, a rep for Stallone told Hollywood Reporter that while Stallone might be involved on some capacity, “He will not portray the character in the series.”

~ NEW SHOWS ~

Evil Kin, a true crime series from Investigation Discovery about twisted families “features outrageous stories, even by ID’s standards,” ID exec producer Pamela Deutsch tells Cynopsis. “Evil Kin features prime examples of ‘that family’ that seems to lurk in every neighborhood. You know the type: an unkempt yard, feral animals, unruly children.” And they’re capable of diabolical behavior. In one episode, says Deutsch, “A family schemes to kill their father. Their mother agrees, as long as ‘it’s not done in the house.'” Evil Kin premieres Wednesday, August 28 at 9p.

After her big career boost from The Voice, season three winner Cassadee Pope knows the value of the small screen. In addition to an August 28 performance on NBC‘s America’s Got Talent (9p), the singer appears in an untitled reality doc for CMT that EP from Good Clean Fun, Jason Carbone, tells Cynopsis will offer an unusually candid look into her journey to stardom. “Cassadee kept a personal video diary while taping the show and we use this device to really put the viewer in touch with her emotional point of view,” says Carbone. Docuseries debuts Friday, October at 9p.

Discovery Channel‘s new series Alaskan Steel Men shows metal welders battling extreme conditions to stop oil barges from sinking, and sealing vessels cracked by ice. Running the operation is Dennis Butts, owner with wife Theresa of Quality Marine of Alaska. “No matter how tough you are, Mother Nature is tougher,” he says. “You make a mistake, people die.” What’s his biggest challenge? Butts tells Cynopsis, “As the boss, to be prepared for anything Alaska might throw at me.” Three-part series premieres Friday, August 30 at 10p.

Destination America‘s King of Thrones tapped a pair of innovative Minnesota remodeling experts to transform boring – and worse – bathrooms into “fortresses of solitude.” DA’s general manager Marc Etkind, who describes the reality show as the net’s “ode to the commode,” tells Cynopsis, “We searched for the best bathroom builders in the country and we found them in Jeff Hoxie and Dave Koop. Pimped-out potties, high-tech talking toilets, televisions in the bathtubs – when it comes to the can, there’s nothing they cannot do.” Premiere is Tuesday, September 10 at 10p.

Hillbilly Thrill Rides, a DA reality show about human slingshots and spinning tractors, premieres on Saturday, August 24 at 8p.

~ RETURNING SERIES ~

Grey’s Anatomy‘s Shonda Rhimes and co-producer Mark Gordon gave a little something special to the almost 300 members of the ABC drama’s cast and crew, to celebrate the show’s 200th episode: a Royal Caribbean cruise to anywhere in the world. “People always talk about the showrunners, but these are the people who make the show what it is,” Rhimes told the Hollywood Reporter. “They’ve given me 10 years of incredibleness.” Season ten of Grey’s premieres Thursday, September 26 at 9p.

~ SYNDICATION NEWS ~

Family Feud returns September 16, with Steve Harvey onboard again as host. The game show, which has been on and off the air since 1976, enjoyed a ratings resurgence after Harvey signed on in 2010, earning a household rating of 4.6 in 2012-13, and tying Wheel of Fortune with a 2.4 in W25-54.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Jerry Kobler, an EP of Emmy-nominated Brain Games, isn’t twiddling his thumbs waiting for trophy night. Not only is he hard at work on the NatGeo science show’s third season, premiering in early 2014, his Atomic Entertainment is developing a series about sleep. “We’re figuring out how to make a show about sleep that doesn’t put people to sleep.” The producer – who learned a thing or two about making educational TV entertaining while working on Sesame Street – he tells Cynopsis, “We’ll keep doing Brain Games ’til they take our pens away.”

Discovery ordered to development North and South, a miniseries based on the 1980s John Jakes trilogy. ABC broadcast miniseries based on the novels, set around the time of the American Civil War, in 1985, 1986 and 1994.

Oxygen Media greenlit Nailed It!, a nail design competition. “Nail art is in the cultural zeitgeist of Oxygen’s viewers,” said Cori Abraham, senior VP development and international.

FX has ordered a pilot for an animated comedy about Bigfoot suffering life’s philosophical puzzles, based on graphic novels by Graham Roumieu. “This will be the greatest show about an animated Bigfoot ever made,” said Seth Rogen, an EP through Point Grey Pictures.

OWN ordered 26 more episodes of the Tyler Perry sitcom Love Thy Neighbor. The season one add-ons will premiere in January.

ABC put sitcom Every Other Saturday into development. The show is about a flawed father’s relationship with his son after a divorce.

Comedy Network has ordered an eight-episode late-night series from comedian Dave Attel. The show, exec produced by Attel and 3 Arts, premieres in 2014.

~ CASTING NEWS ~

Keith Carradine (Dexter) landed a recurring role on FOX‘s The Following. Season two of the thriller returns midseason.

David Clayton Rogers (Nashville) is keeping busy. He’s guest starring on ABC‘s new sitcom Back in the Game, and will recur on the net’s midseason comedy Mixology. Back in the Game premieres Wednesday, September 25 at 8:30p.

Wes Ramsey (CSI:Miami) joins the cast of Pretty Little Liars as hunky guidance counselor Jesse. The ABC Family series returns in January for the second half of season four; summer finale is Tuesday, August 27 at 8p.

LisaGay Hamilton (The Practice) will co-star in AMC drama pilot Line of Sight.
