Chelsea Handler, host of the late-night series Chelsea Lately on E! was selected by MTV to host the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards airing September 12. Handler as host marks the first female in this role in 16 years since Roseanne Barr hosted the VMAs in 1994.

Comedian Sherri Shepherd will become the new host of GSN’s The Newlywed Game, the spot recently vacated by Carnie Wilson. Shepherd is also one of the co-hosts of ABC’s The View. GSN will launch a new season of The Newlywed Game in November.

USA Network renewed its original series Covert Affairs for a second season starring Piper Perabo, Christopher Gorham, Sendhil Ramamurthy, Peter Gallagher, Kari Matchett and Anne Dudek. The series, shot on location in Toronto, became the #1 new series of the year to date with A18-49 at 2.52 million viewers. This week, Covert Affairs attracted 2.34 million A18-49 viewers, 2.4 million among A25-54 and 5.4 million total viewers based on Live+Same Day data. Universal Cable Productions produces the series.
Note: in Wednesday’s edition we inadvertently mentioned USA Network had five original shows, when in fact the network has seven including the new series, Facing Kate premiering in January joining Psych, Burn Notice, Royal Pains, White Collar, In Plain Sight and Covert Affairs.

TLC premieres a sophomore season of Four Weddings with eight new episodes commencing September 10 at 10p. In each one-hour episode, four different brides, displaying their own personal styles and traditions agree to attend and critique each other’s weddings based on the categories of food, dress, venue, originality and overall experience. The winning bride receives a deluxe dream honeymoon. During the first season of Four Weddings, the series averaged 1.1 million total viewers. ITV Studios produces for TLC.

Bravo slated the third season comeback of its reality series The Real Housewives of Atlanta for October 4 at 9p. The series follows six socialites from Atlanta as they juggle their busy careers and home lives. Two new “housewives” join Kandi, Kim, NeNe and Sheree this season: Cynthia Bailey, a professional model and mom to a 10-year old daughter and Phaedra Park, a successful entertainment attorney who sits on various boards and is involved in many charities. During its second season, The Real Housewives of Atlanta averaged 2.32 million A18-49 and 3.26 million total viewers, marking the highest-rated season of the Real Housewives franchise ever among all key demos. True Entertainment produces this series for Bravo.

TV Land’s frosh season finale of Hot in Cleveland on Wednesday at 10p scored a 1.6 rating and 1.6 million A25-54 viewers and 3.4 million total viewers.

Plum TV introduces three new programs via its live stream and on-demand services available at PlumTV.com:

  • Keeping Up with Ramona – Docu-action-guide series featuring Australian Ramona Bruland as she explores top outdoor destinations in America. Four 30m shows debuted August 13 at 9p.
  • Plum TV Presents: Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Swim 2011 – Over four days/nights, Plum TV takes viewers to the front row of the runways during the top swim fashion week. Premiere date was August 13 at 730p.
  • What’s in Store with Mike Albo – Viewers follow fashion and design writer Mike Albo as he tours unique stores, boutiques and concept shops in this half-hour show. Premieres tonight at 730p.

Discovery en Espanol’s series Vida (Life), airing from July 26 through August 6 at 8p each night, delivered 58,000 A18-49 Hispanic viewers as well as 45,000 M18-49 Hispanic viewers.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

HBO has a 60m drama series in development about the adult film industry using actors and adult performers, cites NY Post. Executive producers Mark Wahlberg and Steve Levinson (Entourage, Boardwalk Empire) are involved along with writer James Frey.

Casting Call: The Newlywed Game, produced by Embassy Row and airing on the Game Show Network (GSN), is casting for married couples who have wed in the last two years or less. The show is looking for outgoing married couples located in the NYC tri-state area. Wednesday A18-49 Analysis: FOX captured a win Wednesday night at 2.1/7 with the A18-49 demo, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, CBS had Big Brother in charge at 2.6/9 while FOX’s Masterchef and UNIV’s Hasta que el Dinero Nos Separe tied for second place at 2.0/7 each. NBC wrested the viewers away at 9p with America’s Got Talent at 2.6/8 followed by UNIV’s Soy Tu Duena at 2.2/7 and FOX’s Masterchef in a close third position at 2.2/6. In the 10p hour, NBC was first with a Law & Order: SVU rerun at 1.4/4 and a repeat of CSI: NY on CBS came next at 1.2/4.

Chris Hayes was tagged as CMO at Young & Rubicam, North America where he will spearhead all marketing efforts in the North American region. Prior to this appointment, Chris worked for Euro RSCG 4D in the dual role as Marketing Director/Europe based in Amsterdam and as Global Brand Director on the Unilever account. Now at Young & Rubicam, Chris will report direct to Tom Sebok, President/CEO at the company’s New York headquarters.

Zocalo Group, Omnicom Group’s word-of-mouth marketing agency and a part of Ketchum, hired Jennifer Severns as Creative Director of Zocalo Studios. Jennifer will head a team charged with developing content, interactive and consumer experiences on behalf of the agency’s clients. She joins Zocalo Group from Harpo Productions, Inc. where for the last nine years she has been involved with supervising and implementing design and digital strategy for Harpo and the Oprah Winfrey Network.
