Good morning. It’s Friday, August 16, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

FOX found a way to make it on time, announcing that its upcoming sports network FOX Sports 1 will be carried by every major distributor when it launches tomorrow. The additions of DIRECTV, Dish Network, Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks bring the launch tally to around 90 million homes, joining Comcast, Cablevision, Cox, Verizon, and AT&T. The channel will be upgraded to 219 on DIRECTV and 150 on Dish. FS2, meanwhile, will simply take over any channel currently occupied by FUEL TV. Deadline reports that the distributors allowed Fox to convert and upgrade FS1 as long as they didn’t really have to pay extra fees to carry the channel for now.

On the Air

Meanwhile, CBS Sports Network is also on the move on DIRECTV, and will be shifted to channel 221 on the satellite carrier starting Wednesday, Aug. 21. The channel was formerly located at channel 613.

ESPN locked in network and time assignments for the 15th annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge Presented by DICK’s Sporting Goods on Dec. 3 and 4 with 12 games set for ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU The mothership tips off the action with Indiana/Syracuse at 7:15p followed by Michigan/Duke on Dec. 3 while ESPN offers Illinois/Georgia Tech and Notre Dame/Iowa. ESPNU begins at 7:30p with a Penn State/Pitt and Florida State/Minnesota double header.
 
CBS Sports’ College Football Today kicks off the season by visiting Kyle Field in College Station, Texas on Sept. 14 ahead of the Texas A&M/Alabama SEC game. In addition, Series host Tim Brando along with analyst Spencer Tillman will be joined by Brian Jones for the event.

The New Jersey Devils officially have a new owner, announcing that 76ers owner Josh Harris has bought the team along with the rights to operate the Prudential Center. Harris and his group paid $320 million for the team to a group headed by investment banker Joshua Harris. The NHL’s board of governors approved the deal on Wednesday.

NBC Sports Radio announced that Rotoworld will serve as the fantasy sports information brand of NBC Sports Radio. As a result of the partnership The channel will offer on-demand specialty shows will be hosted by NBC Sports Radio anchor and Rotoworld contributor Kay Adams. The partnership will also include lLive interviews on NBC Sports Radio throughout the NFL season with Rotoworld writers and talent and two exclusive, 60-minute NFL-related fantasy shows per week on Tuesdays and Fridays – that will live on the NBC Sports Radio on-demand network.

NFL Media is bringing in veteran reporter/columnist Michael Silver to appear on a variety of NFL Network programming as well as write columns for NFL.com. Silver joins NFL Media after six years covering the league at Yahoo! Sports.

ESPN and TNT announced preseason NBA plans with ESPN carrying an NBA preseason doubleheader on Wednesday, October 23 starting at 7p. The first matchup will pit the Nets/Celtics while the nightcap offers a Bulls/Thunder matchup from Wichita.

On TNT, NBA preseason coverage will tip off Thursday, Oct. 17, at 8p with the Heat/Nets from Barclays Center. The network also announced plans to carry the Rockets/Spurs on Thursday, Oct. 24, at 8p. 

Bob Costas and Bill Ripkin will team up for the first time ever, when MLB Network showcases the Red Sox and Yankees from Fenway Park at 7p tonight. This also marks Ripkin’s first game of the year for the channel. Sam Ryan will be the in-game reporter during the telecast. The Red Sox currently have the best record in American League while the Yankees trail Rays and Athletics by five games for an American League Wild Card spot.
 
Saturday’s launch of FOX Sports 1 will be highlighted by NASCAR programming from Michigan International Speedway starting at 8a with six and a half hours of coverage of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race beginning with NASCAR Live!. Meanwhile, Trackside makes its 429th and final episode from the track the day before on the outgoing SPEED.

The Pro Football Retired Player Association (PFRPA) inked a partnership with IMG Licensing to manage the marketing and licensing rights of its members. The move comes after a federal court settlement between retired NFL players and the NFL that establishes two entities controlled exclusively by a board of directors made up of retired NFL players: A licensing agency, run in conjunction with IMG Licensing to create, develop and manage new revenue streams through the commercialization of the group rights of retired players’ name, likeness, autographs and images; and a “Greater Good Fund” (GGF) that will support health and welfare programs for retired NFL players.

Polaroid added another athlete to the family, signing professional wakeboarder Mike Dowdy to help promote the new line of mountable hi-definition sports action cameras. He joins wakeboarder Noah Flegel and wakesurfer Keenan Flegel under the brand’s umbrella.

Professional Bull Riders is taking on Air Bull Riding, offering fans the chance to win $20,000 in a new promotion for the organization. PBR launched its first annual Air Bull Riding contest – The Ride on to Vegas; Who Gives a Buck Challenge giving the winner $20,000 and a trip for two to the 2013 Built Ford Tough Series World Finals Oct. 23-27 in Las Vegas for the best air bull riding performance, and the chance to win $250,000. Fan can enter until Sept. 30 by videotaping themselves “air bull riding” and uploading them to the contest website at pbr.com.

Digital & Technology

While FOX confirmed multiple reports that it had postponed plans to launch its TV Everywhere service with the bow of FS1, the network did announce that it had acquired assets of sports start-up Fanhood and hired its core team, including founder and CEO Brandon Ramsey who was named Vice President of Platform Engineering, FOX Sports Digital and will be charged with running personalization and social product development for FOX Sports Digital.
 
Meanwhile, ESPN announced a big update to its WatchESPN App with new enhancements that include a live toolbar that leverages native functionality to present stats, scores and ESPN.com on-demand clips without needing to stop a second of streaming video.

ESPN also announced that one the one-year anniversary of its digital brands ESPNFC.com and ESPN FC on mobile, that for its second year there will be new additions to the ESPN FC Blog Network, including Americans Abroad, Bundesliga, Champions League, Hull City, Cardiff City and Crystal Palace. An all-new ESPN FC TV blog will also launch with extras such as extended interviews with guests and on-camera reaction pieces from the daily soccer TV program.
