New Discovery Channel series:
- Worst Case Scenario – Based on the series of books with the same name, this series follows host Bear Grylls (Man vs. Wild) as he demonstrates how to survive life-threatening, worst case scenario situations.
- Construction Intervention – Series follows New York City construction expert, Charlie Frattini and his team as they work on real-life property development projects, particularly those that fall in the nightmare category such as victims of a renovation disaster.

ANIMAL PLANET:
Following its rebrand two years ago, Animal Planet continues to offer series reflecting people’s complex relationships with animals. The network is serving up 300 hours of programming with at least a third being new shows along with many returning programs. The network also introduces its new tagline for the new season: “Surprisingly Human.”
Six new series on the docket for Animal Planet:
- Dolphin Warriors (wt) – Dolphin activist and filmmaker Ric O’Barry reveals the unnecessary and huge dolphin slaughter in Taiji, referred to as The Cove. The series also focuses on Ric and his son Lincoln’s efforts to help save the dolphins.
- Last Chance Highway – Series about Shelly Bookwalter and Kyle Peterson who devote their lives to saving thousands of stray and unwanted dogs. Each episode follows three dogs as they adapt to new homes with loving families.
- Must Love Cats – Host and musician John Fulton delves into everything cat in this series for the feline lover.
- Taking on Tyson – Heavyweight boxing champ, Mike Tyson reveals his love of pigeons in this series as well as documenting his new passion of pigeon racing.
- Skunk Whisperer (wt) – When wildlife enters the domains of human, Ned Bruha (aka the Skunk Whisperer) is called to offer humane wildlife removal.
- World’s Deadliest Towns (wt) – Large predator expert, Dave Salmoni explores the delicate balance between the animal world and humans in places around the globe such as India where villagers who must battle elephants in order to survive.
Returning Series:
- Animal Planet has a slew of returning series including: Dogs 101/Cats 101, The Haunted, I’m Alive, I Shouldn’t Be Alive, It’s Me or the Dog, Lost Tapes, Monsters Inside Me, Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom, Pit Boss, Pit Bulls and Parolees, River Monsters and Whale Wars.
OWN: THE OPRAH WINFREY NETWORK:
Yesterday, Oprah introduced the new original programming for OWN’s January 1, 2011 launch at the network’s upfront at New York’s Jazz at Lincoln Center. “My vision for OWN is to create a network that inspires our viewers and makes them want to be who they are on their best day,” said Oprah. Five new series were revealed adding to the ten previously announced series.
New OWN series:
- Oprah’s Next Chapter – Following the end of her 25-year daily syndicated show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Oprah will carry on doing what she loves best in a new one-hour regular series. Oprah will have conversations with interesting people who the viewers want to know more about in sometimes very interesting places. Oprah will travel to the Great Wall in China and to India’s Taj Mahal to have these conversations. Produced by Harpo Studios.
- Visionaries: Inside the Creative Mind – The world’s most creative and famous will take viewers inside their creative process. Featuring the likes of James Cameron to Lady Gaga to Annie Leibovitz. Produced by Radical Media.
- Your Own Show: Oprah’s Search for the Next TV Star (wt) – Oprah and reality TV producer Mark Burnett are teaming on this nationwide search to discover TV’s next big star. Details about the show will be announced in May on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Mark Burnett Productions will produce.
- Gayle King Live! – Oprah’s best friend and Editor-At-Large for O, The Oprah Magazine, will bring her radio show to a daily one-hour television program.
- Why Not? With Shania Twain – Country music superstar, Shania Twain opens up about her life-changing heartbreak and how she is coping in this one-hour series produced by Gay Rosenthal Productions with Gay Rosenthal executive producing.

- Behind the Scenes: The Oprah Show Final Season – Docu-series goes inside for the first time into the inner workings of the daily syndicated show and as it concludes. Co-produced by Harpo Studios and True Entertainment.
- Breaking Down the Bars – One-hour series about women in prison who have a real shot at rehabilitation and atonement. 44 Blue Productions is producing.
- Enough Already (formerly the Peter Walsh Project) – Peter continues his quest to help people declutter their lives. Discovery Studios produces the one-hour format.
- In the Bedroom with Dr. Laura Berman – Sex therapist and relationship expert and Sirius XM radio show host, Laura Berman works with real couples and their relationships. One-hour format produced by Harpo Studios.
- Inside with Lisa Ling – Lisa interviews and relates stories about people where most wouldn’t dare venture from mail-order brides to American militias. One-hour format produced by Part2 Pictures.
- Kidnapped by the Kids – Kids of work-aholic parents are in charge to reclaim time with their moms and dads. One-hour series from Love Productions.
- The Miracle Detectives – Series explores amazing stories from the perspective of a believer and a skeptic who needs proof. One-hour format from Pilgrim Film & Television.
- Oprah Presents: Master Class – Oprah handpicks today’s intriguing people who will share their stories and insights from Bono to Simon Cowell to Toni Morrison. Produced by Radical Media.
- The Swell Life – A look inside the life of competitive surfer, Izzy Paskowitz and his wife and kids, one of whom is autistic. 30m series produced by Snackaholic.
- Searching – Search specialist and genealogist Pam Slaton helps people find lost loved ones. One-hour series from Stuart Krasnow Productions.
INVESTIGATION DISCOVERY:
After launching in January 2008, ID is currently distributed to more than 62 million US homes. The network has a number of new series for the 2010-2011 season.

- Paperback Mysteries – Series explores the cross-over between fact and fiction going inside the minds of today’s popular writers of thrillers and mysteries.
- Buried Secrets – Mysterious stories told from the perspective of the victim.

SCIENCE CHANNEL:
Science Channel’s 2010-2011 upfront includes programming that continues to fire up viewers’ imaginations, prompting them to view the world a new way.
New original series on Science Channel:
- Prophets of Science Fiction – Series profiles the lives, ideas and philosophies and more of visionaries in the science field.
- The World Without – Based on the premise: what would the world be like if a particular thing didn’t exist such as death, snakes, sunlight and more.
- Mutant Planet – Six regions of the earth will be the focus of this series exploring the mysteries of evolution.
- Fringe Science – The minds of such greats as Aristotle, Newton, Galileo, Hawking and more will be explored.

PLANET GREEN:
Planet Green will become a Nielsen-rated network during the upcoming broadcast season. The network will continue to be a programming destination for conscious living through stories and inspiring characters.
New Planet Green series:
- Treehugger TV – Inspired by the online lifestyle brand, TreeHugger.com, this new series features comedian Faith Salie as she looks at current global environmental topics. Four 30m eps premiere 4Q 2010.
- The Kamen Code – Dean Kamen and his correspondent Joanne Colan attempt to change the world by using cutting-edge technology on the planet. Eight 30m eps premiere 1Q 2011.
- Shareen Vintage – Series features vintage clothing designer, Shareen Mitchell as she takes worn-out clothing articles and transforms them into one-of-kind wonders. Eight 30m eps launch 1Q 2011.
- The John Patrick Show – Designer John Patrick continues to buck conventional wisdom by offering sustainable, organic haute couture lines. Six 30m eps debut 1Q 2011.

DISCOVERY HEALTH:
Discovery Health will offer programming through fourth quarter 2010 up to the time when the network transitions to OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network. Until this time the network will continue with new episodes of Dr. G: Medical Examiner produced by Atlas Media in fourth quarter as well as a weeklong programming event in December titled New Year, New You.
MILITARY CHANNEL:
The Military Channel is the only network dedicated to military programming with stories of real-life heroism, military strategy and historic events. The network, with 57.4 million subscribers, offers these returning series: Greatest Tank Battles, Ultimate Weapons, and Operation Homecoming.
HD THEATER:
The 24-hour hi-def network offered the following new series at its upfront:
- The Adventurist – American mountaineer Joby Ogwyn takes on a new extreme challenge in each episode.
- American Icon: The Hot Rod – Series looks in-depth at the history of the American hot rod.
- I Could Do That! – Series is about ordinary people who have a chance to try their hand at a challenging experience.
- Cafe Racer – Series explores the world of this special type of motorcycle and the motorcyclist.
- Adrenalina – Series profiles some of the most adventurous extreme sports athletes.
Returning programming on HD Theater: Mecum Auto Auctions: Muscle Cars and More, 2010 World Rally Championship and Chasing Classic Cars.
HBO ordered the pilot Enlightened to series, giving the Laura Dern-headlining comedy a nine-episode order, cites THR. The single-camera comedy has Dern playing a self-destructive woman who has a revelation at a treatment center and becomes determined to lead a better life which creates new havoc at home. Luke Wilson, Sarah Burns and Dern’s real-life mother, Diane Ladd also co-star. Production begins this summer in Los Angeles.
BBC Worldwide Channels said its channel BBC America named John Taite as VP/Multiplatform Programming. John will develop and head the network’s editorial goals in the US for branded digital platforms, upcoming genre channel launches and additional programming efforts. John transitions to this new position this month and will report to Chris Carr, COO/Channels, BBC America and Richard De Croche, SVP/Programming.
John Honeycutt will take on the new role of EVP/Head of International Business Operations for Discovery Networks International (DNI) announced Discovery Communications. Based in London, John will report to Mark Hollinger, President/CEO of the division.
