UPFRONT 2012:  Discovery Communications

Discovery Communications and its roster of networks celebrated their 2012-2013 Upfront last evening at Columbus Circle in New York City. 

Discovery Channel offered four new series:

  • Top Engineer searches for America’s best and creative engineer in this competition series.
  • One Car Too Far follows a former British Forces operative and an American car enthusiast as they are dropped in a fantastic landscapes and forced to work together to survive and eventually escape to safety.  The unique aspect of the series is they take a small red car with them, as one knows how to drive and the other how to survive. 
  • Mark Burnett’s Alaska, the reality show executive producer brings the interesting people, amazing history and unforgettable places that makes Alaska unique to Discovery Channel viewers.
  • Fast and Loud features motorhead Richard Rawlings and mechanical prodigy Aaron Kaufmann as they search remote places in the country for forgotten and wrecked classic cars to restore at their Gas Monkey Garage.

Discovery Channel is returning many series to its schedule include: Gold Rush, Bering Sea Gold, Deadliest Catch, Flying Wild Alaska, American Chopper, Alaska: The Final Frontier, Dirty Jobs, Moonshiners, Mythbusters, Curiosity, Dual Survival and Auction Kings. 

TLC has a “sweet 16” of new series set for their lineup:

  • Bates Family Series (wt) follows Gil and Kelly Jo, parents to a family of 19 children who lead a basic life in the hills of Tennessee. 2Q 2012.
  • Big Brooklyn Style is a half-hour workplace docu-soap about plus-sized designer Lisa Dolan and her husband/partner Jim Dolan.  2Q 2012.
  • Big Tiny: Life with the Jordans follows the world’s smallest siblings, Bridgette and Brad Jordan.  2Q 2012.
  • Breaking Amish (wt) takes an inside look at the world of the Amish following five men and women and one Mennonite woman as they make the decision to embrace the church and lifestyle of the Amish and Mennonite or leave for good and carve a life outside their communities.  3Q 2012.
  • Craft Wars hosted by Tori Spelling is a competition series where craft enthusiasts pit their skills against each other in this one-hour series. 
  • Extreme Cheapskates looks at the most extreme money saving people in America.  3Q 2012.
  • Irish Dancing Series (wt) is a one-hour special and an eight-part series offering a view inside the world of competitive Irish dance.  Special: 3Q 2012; Series: 1Q 2013.
  • Untitled Jo Frost Project (wt) involves a development deal with the original Supernanny, Jo Frost who will resume her work fixing troubled families with troublesome children.  1Q 2013.
  • Mama’s Boys of the Bronx is a previously-announced eight-part series about a group of single guys living in the Bronx still with mothers. 2Q 2012.
  • May the Best House Win is a competition series where four different homeowners take turns to host a tour of their homes.  The other contestants will get a chance to look around before giving their opinions and rating the homes with each hoping their house in the end comes out on top to win the $10,000 prize.  3Q 2012.
  • On the Fly highlights personnel and passengers of Southwest Airlines in this reality series that visits airports in Chicago, Baltimore, Denver, New Orleans, Fort Lauderdale and Tampa.  2Q 2012.
  • Preacher Ladies (wt) takes an unvarnished look at Southern belles who shatter the stereotypes of what is expected of a preacher’s wife.  4Q 2012.
  • Randy to the Rescue stars Randy Fenoli from Say Yes to the Dress as he hosts bridal truck shows in different cities each episode.  2Q 2012.
  • Southie Pride (wt) visits the historic neighborhood South Boston in this reality series that looks inside the homes and lives of South Boston women.  3Q 2012.

Animal Planet has a dozen new series and specials for its schedule:

  • Fish America (wt) showcases outdoorsman and pro wrestler Showtime Eric Young as he travels the country to find the most creative and dangerous fishing rituals. 
  • Frontier Earth with Dave Salmoni (wt) features Dave Salmoni, a large predator expert as he journeys to where animals such as the Komodo dragon, the slow loris and others live in this six-part series.
  • Glory Hounds (wt) looks at military working dogs who serve our country beside their human partners in Iraq and Afghanistan.
  • Monster Week is a week-long showcase of monsters and mysteries as well as highlighting such shows as River Monsters, Finding Bigfoot, Call of the Wildman and more.
  • Polar Bear Family and Me (wt) follows wildlife filmmaker Gordon Buchanan as he travels into the Arctic to infiltrate a family of polar bears as he documents their struggle for survival.
  • Rhino Wars (wt) relates the heroic efforts of South African anti-poaching units who team with former US Special Forces operatives to track down illegal rhino poachers.
  • The Afterlife: Elephant and The Afterlife: Hippo focuses on the circle of life and two mystical journeys in the heart of Africa.
  • The Hunger (wt) is hosted by Guy Grieve who guides viewers on this journey looking at how different groups of people must follow the food trail to survive.
  • Treehouse Men (wt) features a group of men outside of Seattle who earn their living creating and building fantastic treehouses for billionaires to 10-year olds.
  • Top Hooker (wt) is a competition series that pits 10 expert fishers into two teams and watches as they battle in a series of unique fishing challenges. 
  • Wild Arabia (wt) goes deep into the magical landscape of the Gulf region featuring the sand dunes of Saudi Arabia and Oman to the coastal areas of Yemen to the Tigris-Euphrates River Delta.
  • Wild Hawaii (wt) explores America’s Pacific Ocean island state taking a look at its beaches, its volcanoes and its wildlife.

  • Evil Twins follows true-crime stories of real-life cases involving the evil twin archetype.
  • Redrum takes viewers on backwards tales of murders, starting with the false motives and mistaken witnesses to conversations taken out of context until the truth is out at the end.
  • Deadly Affairs relates stories of passionate love affairs that turned into crimes of passion hosted by soap star Susan Lucci.

New original series for Investigation Discovery:

  • Frenemies: BFFs Gone Bad serves up stories of former devoted friendships that went horribly awry.
  • ‘Til Death Do Us Part explores stories of divorce that end in murder led by psychotherapist and relationship expert, Dr. Stacy Kaiser and forensic psychologist and attorney, Dr. Brian Russell.
  • Wives With Knives showcases stories of women who fought back and murdered at close range motivated by years of abuse or by greed and jealousy.
  • Pretty Bad Girls is a true-crime series profiling sexy criminals who cheat, steal and kill.
  • Cold Case (wt) delves into unsolved homicide cases as they are reopened.
  • Dangerous Persuasions (wt) relates true tales of everyday people who were manipulated into committing horrible crimes.
  • The Ex-Files (wt) goes deep into extreme romantic relationships that turned bad showing the stories from both sides.
  • Who The Bleep…  is a spin-off of the network’s series Who the (Bleep) Did I Marry?  with this new series going deeper into relationships between friends, co-workers, family members and more telling the truth about people leading double lives.
  • Murder In Paradise (wt) follows the stories of happy couples whose vacations in paradise end in violence.

Joe Kenda, Nightmare Next Door, True Crime with Aphrodite Jones, Deadly Women, Behind Mansion Walls, Very Bad Men and Twisted.  The network also airs such broadcast news magazine shows as 48 Hours on ID from CBS; Dateline on ID from NBC; and 20/20 on ID from ABC.

SCIENCE will be in more than 80 million homes in 2013 and offers up its programming by quarter.  In 4Q 2012 the series include:

  • Odd Folks Home shows the inside of the homes of the clientele seen on the series Oddities.   6 half-hour episodes.
  • How Do They Do It?: Season 6 relates how people endure or do things from brewing beer to making Swiss cheese and more.  10 half-hour episodes.
  • How It’s Made: Season 11 explores how things are made from adhesive bandages to contact lenses. 

SCIENCE 1Q 2013 series programming includes:

  • This Changes Everything looks at one idea or discovery that will significantly alter life as we know it such as synthetic biology, nano technology and more.  6 one-hour episodes.
  • How the Earth Works, led by hosts Liz Bonin and Martin Pepper reveals the most provocative questions facing earth science today.  8 one-hour episodes.
  • Oddities: Season 4 continues to look inside East Village’s Obscura Antiques & Oddities shop in New York City.  14 half-hour episodes.

SCIENCE 2Q 2013 series programming includes:

 

  • Strip the City uses CGI animation to strip major cities naked of their steel, concrete, air, ocean – layer by layer to look at their hidden infrastructure.  5 one-hour episodes.
  • The Experimenters follows amateur and professional scientists as they go to the streets, backyards and parks to conduct experiments with their exploits uploaded on YouTube.  6 one-hour episodes.
  • World’s Weirdest explores weird places, gruesome discoveries, freaky experiments and shocking stories.  8 one-hour episodes.
  • Story of the Continents is a four-part, one-hour series that explores the traces of mysterious long-lost worlds with opinions from experts in palaeogeography.

SCIENCE 3Q 2013 series programming includes:

  • What Is That? leaves viewers guessing what they are watching with each episode using five stand-alone segments that use specialty cameras and innovative filming techniques that capture incredible images.  10 half-hour episodes.
  • Conquerors looks at fascinating animals that modify their behavior and social organization to dominate their newly-colonized territories which end up endangering native species.  4 one-hour episodes.

Military Channel will triple its programming investment for its 2012-2013 programming slate.  The network’s new series includes:

  • The Brokaw Files (wt) revisits monumental moments in history from the perspective of Tom Brokaw using his own first-hand accounts.
  • Spy vs. Spy (wt) relates real-world stories of international espionage as told by the men and women who risked their lives during the Cold War.
  • Air Aces (wt) profiles harrowing airborne combat missions using CGI animation and real-life aerial reenactments with historic aircraft.
  • Secret Weapons Revealed (wt) features top secret weapons, some that worked, some far-fetched and some that failed that paved the way for future successes in weapons development.
  • Ultimate Warfare (wt) takes a look at some of the greatest conflicts in modern history using CGI animation and “on the ground” interviews.
  • Black Ops (wt) delves inside the top secret world of special ops missions.
  • Infamous Assassinations (wt) goes behind the scenes of assassination attempts that changed the course of history.

Military Channel is bringing back three series: An Officer and a Movie, Combat Tech and Top Tens.

Discovery Fit & Health revealed two new series for its schedule:

  • High School Moms follows the real-life drama at a Colorado high school dedicated exclusively to pregnant girls and teen moms.  3Q 2012.
  • If They Were My Kids follows siblings with different parenting styles that get a chance to test their conflicting philosophies by switching places to take care of each other’s kids.  1Q 2013.

Discovery Fit & Health has four returning series: Addicted Season 2, Secretly Pregnant Season 2, My Naked Secret Season 2 and Untold Stores of the ER Season 7.

Velocity continues to go full-throttle after seven months on the air with various new and returning series listed by quarter.  4Q 2012 series include:

  • Road to LeMans follows Patrick Dempsey as owner and driver for an auto racing team in the legendary and world’s oldest automotive race, LeMans.  4 one-hour episodes.

OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network announced a handful of new and returning original series:

  • Are You Normal, America? from Harpo Studios and Zoo Productions is a new game show hosted by Barry Poznick and Kim Coles.  Each episode watches as contestants win money prizes in their quest to learn what is normal and what is not.
  • Elura and Michele Take Staten Island features two fast-talking best friends from Staten Island, Elura and Michele who are former prosecutors and know how to tell it like it is.  Produced by Shack Entertainment.
  • Iyanla Fix My Life features author/inspirational speaker/talk show host Iyanla Vanzant as she fixes lives using her past to help others. Produced by Harpo Studios.
  • Married to the Army: Alaska looks at the lives of women whose husbands serve in the US Army.  Produced by 44 Blue Productions.
  • Oprah’s Master Class is a returning series featuring in-depth interviews of people who have had a unique impact on the world.
  • Six Little McGhees (wt) follows the lives of Mia and Rozonno McGhee as they juggle marriage, a family business and six toddlers.  Produced by Candor Entertainment, in association with Discovery Fit & Health and OWN.
  • Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s is a returning series featuring former Ikette Miss Robbie Montgomery and her family who own a St. Louis soul food restaurant.

Gil Noble, considered a New York broadcasting legend and who served as producer and host of WABC-TV’s public affairs program Like It Is, died yesterday at the age of 80.   Mr. Noble, who was born in Harlem, spent his life working and serving his community gaining recognition throughout his career both locally and nationally as he documented African-American lives and contributions.  During his storied career, Mr. Noble had the opportunity to interview numerous national and international heads of state including South Africa’s President Nelson Mandela and Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe; entertainment icons including Bill Cosby, Harry Belafonte and Lena Horne; sports stars like Muhammad Ali and Arthur Ashe; and political figures such as Jesse Jackson and Louis Farrakhan among many more.   Mr. Noble also created documentaries profiling notables including Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Charlie Parker among several others.  Instead of flowers, Mr. Noble’s family requests donations sent to the Gil Noble Archives, P.O. Box 43138, Upper Montclair, NJ 07043.  Proceeds will go to preserve the archives so that Mr. Noble’s mission of educating the community about its culture and history will continue.

Wednesday A18-49 Analysis:  FOX sang for its top ratings Wednesday and delivered a 4.9/14 among A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  At 8p, FOX’s American Idol captured the #1 spot at 4.4/14 and CBS’ Survivor: One World was in its usual second place at 2.8/9.  During 9p, American Idol on FOX jetted up to a 5.3/15 and CBS’ Criminal Minds was next at 3.0/8.  CBS then moved up to first place at 10p with CSI at 2.9/8 and Univision was #2 with La Que No Podia Amar at 1.8/5.

Bill Hickey advances to SVP/Engineering at Premiere Networks up from VP.  Bill is in charge of all studio operations and administration in addition to supervising engineering and technical operations for the company’s studio facilities nationwide in Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, Chicago and Florida.  Based in Los Angeles, Bill continues to report to Julie Talbott, President/Content and Affiliate Relations.

Former Deputy Features Editor/Television at the New York Daily News, Richard Huff joins CBS News as Executive Director/Communications.  Richard begins his new position in May where he will head strategic communications and brand development across various platforms for 48 Hours Mystery, CBS Sunday Morning, CBS News Productions and CBS News Primetime Specials.  Richard will further contribute efforts in support of all CBS News.

Gravitas Ventures, an independent VOD distribution company upped Melanie Miller to the newly-minted role as VP/Acquisitions.  Melanie will manage a five-person acquisition team who will indentify 500 films per year to release on VOD to the world.  Melanie reports to Michael Murphy, President.
