~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Online video distributor Azureus formally launched Vuze.com, a new video-on-demand site which had been operating under the codename Zudeo. Vuze utilizes Azureus’ peer-to-peer downloading technology to deliver high definition video content from a growing group of content partners including A&E, Starz, BBC and coming soon, Showtime. Much of its content is free, but the premium stuff is available for rent or as downloads-to-own, depending on stipulations of the content provider. Prices range from 99 cents to $4.99. Azureus, which launched the Zudeo service in December, claims the site has served nearly 3 million downloads so far. Like Joost, it requires users to download a client application to the desktop.
 
Discovery Communications announced PlanetGreen, a global cross-platform green lifestyle initiative built around a rebrand of linear digital cable channel Discovery Home. The company is spending $50 million to create content focused on sustainable development, conservation, organic lifestyles and healthy living. Digital components include building online forums about green living and producing original videos exclusively for digital platforms such as the short-form series “Go Green.”
 
Discovery also announced it will premier two new shows per week during the third quarter from across its networks on discovery.com, one week prior to their airdates. The strategy is to try and drive online users back to its TV brands. Online premiers are scheduled for Man Vs. Wild, Dirty Jobs, American Chopper, What Not To Wear, Bindi and The Junge Girl. The iPremieres will be packaged with taggable bonus material for advertisers.
 
NBC.com has added more late-night content to the site from Saturday Night Live, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with Conan O’Brien and Last Call With Carson Daly. NBC.com is also giving a sneak peek of its social network launching in June, featuring new ways to interact with the stars of shows such as Heroes. Finally, Amy Sedaris (Strangers with Candy) and Ed Asner guest star in a web only episode of Andy Barker, P.I. entitled The Lady Varnishes. Sendaris plays nymphomaniac ex-con similar to her ex-junkie character in Strangers.
 
IFC In Theaters, IFC’s simultaneous theatrical and VOD release program, will include a public service message delivered by Sigourney Weaver regarding autism with its latest film release Snow Cake, debuting April 25. April is Autism Awareness month.
 
AT&T and USA Gymnastics have developed an exclusive behind-the-scenes series chronicling the USA Gymnastics team as it trains for the Olympics. The 25-part series features interviews with players and coaches and training footage. It will debut later this month on AT&T’s blueroom site and new webisodes will be added through August of 2008.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
 

AT&T, in partnership with EchoStar and DirecTV, is offering U-verse subscribes one year of free HD television. AT&T’s fiber-to-the-home U-verse service offers 25 HD channels while up to 31 additional channels are available through satellite.  New AT&T/Dish customers get a $20 in mail-in rebate for 10 months and $40 back for the last two months. New AT&T/DirecTV customers get $10 credits on their bill if they subscribe to Triple Choice (voice, data and video). The promotion will cover states previously served by SBC and Bell South.
 
Greenpeace busted Apple down to last place on its Green Ranking quarterly guide, which analyzes the environmental record of technology companies. The ranking looks at manufactures’ recycling and toxic content policies. The top ranking went to Chinese PC maker Lenovo, replacing Nokia, which had been on top since the list began last fall. It accused Apple of releasing more and more new products without doing enough to recycle the toxic chemicals in its products that end up in landfills in developing countries. Greenpeace.org encourages Apple users to write to Steve Jobs to ask that he clean up his act.


 

Kevin Martin’s plan to create small independently-owned broadcasters by utilizing digital channels leased from traditional broadcasters has generated little enthusiasm in the marketplace, according to TVNewsday, with only a few religious broadcasters showing any interest thus far. Station owners are concerned that leasing spectrum to small entities may create liability problems, as the station owner would be ultimately responsible for what goes on the air.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
The Cable Advertising Bureau officially pulled its support of eBay‘s online marketplace for buying and selling cable TV ad time. CAB president Sean Cunningham called the tool “narrow,” claiming it automated only a small part of the process and lacked the ability to capture the essence of why ads are bought and sold. EBay said it would move forward with its trials with several large cable networks on an individual basis. Steering committee members of the eBay Online Media Exchange from the media buying community also remain committed to further trials, according to reports.


~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Videos removed at the request of copyright owners accounted for only nine percent of the total videos on YouTube while removed videos accounted for only six percent of total video views on the site, according to a study released by online tracking firm Vidmeter.com. The report studied clips and usage from December 2005 to March 2007, concentrating on the 6,725 most-viewed clips. Vidmeter tracks video downloads from Addicting Clips, Break, Brightcove, Daily Motion, Google, Grouper, iFilm, Metacafe, MySpace, Revver, Veoh, vSocial, Yahoo and YouTube.
 
Thirty-five percent of viewers watch television away from home each week, according to a new study by Arbitron, and those who do are more likely to watch commercials than when viewing at home. The study found the younger the demo, the more likely out-of-home viewing is to occur, with 64 percent of viewers aged 12 to 17 viewing away from home at least once a week. Sporting events, local news and entertainment series were watched in nearly equal percentages.
 
Media analysis firm Kagan Research was acquired by SNL Financial, which will relaunch as SNL Media & Communications. SNL covers the energy, real estate and financial industries.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~
 

Jason Samuels has been named Senior Producer in charge of digital content for World News with Charles Gibson. He will oversee daily production of the World News webcast and the broadcast’s integration with ABCNews.com.
 
Gemstar-TV Guide named Mark Bautz Editor-in-Chief of TV Guide Online. He will oversee all editorial and broadband content for the company’s stable of sites including TVGuide.com, JumptheShark.com, TVShowsonDVD.com and FansofReality.com. His most recent position was editor-in-chief, People.com.
 
Digitas has combined its health care practice with the interactive agency Medical Broadcasting Co. it acquired last year. Digitas Health will be run by CEO David Kramer, who will report to Digitas President Laura Lang. Digitas Health will be based in Philadelphia.
 
Mike Parker was named Director of Digital Strategy at Goodby, Silverstein & Partners. He will focus on clients’ online, search and mobile strategies and will report to Derek Robson, Goodby’s Managing Partner.
 
Online social network for high school sports TAKKLE hired Frank Speiser as Chief Technology Officer. Frank formerly served as CTO for Heavy.com.
 



~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
Thank God it’s Friday. That means only two more days until The Sopranos returns for its final 9 episodes on HBO. If you have digital cable with a video-on-demand subscription, you can catch HBO’s recaps of the previous six seasons, an efficient way to prepare. But if you’re really pressed for time, watch the Seven Minute Sopranos – a “wacked out” refresher on YouTube. It focuses strictly on the narrative of the series-the affairs, flip-outs and wackings. It moves so briskly, you may have to pause it once or twice to catch your breath. But it’s funny as hell, and perhaps one of the best arguments for why unauthorized uploads of studio content may not be such a bad thing.
