A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM WARNER BROS. DOMESTIC CABLE DISTRIBUTION
OFF WB SERIES = SUCCESS ON CABLE
Gilmore Girls is #1 on ABC Family! Outperforms hit cable programs: Battlestar Galactica (Sci Fi),Chappelle’s Show (Comedy), Queer Eye for the Straight Guy (Bravo) CABLE’S NEXT HIT: EVERWOOD Source: NTI, Galaxy Explorer, HH Cov Rtg. 4/17-4/24/05. Gilmore = M-F 5p. CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Good morning. It’s Friday, April 29, 2005, the first day of the May 2005 sweep, and this is your first early morning briefing. ABC list of series re-upped for next season has grown by two – According to Jim and AFV. Others already guaranteed a slot for next season include Alias, Boston Legal, Desperate Housewives, EM: HE and Lost. And while nothing official has come out of NBC as yet, the rumor mill is churning out the word that American Dreams will not be on the schedule next season. Fox apparently liked the way Stacked worked out on Wednesday night behind American Idol at 930p and will keep it there for the next two weeks. Perhaps having Pamela Anderson and Christopher Lloyd guesting in the audience at American Idol helped. Alternatively, Life on a Stick‘s modest performance at 830p helped Fox decide to replace it with second plays of That 70’s Show, at least thru May 11. If you were flipping around last night at 8p and then at 8:59p, you know who carried the President in full and who bailed a few questions early. On Tuesday the White House told the networks the President would hold a press conference at 830p on Thursday night. 830p! Tough timing for most of the broadcast networks, as only NBC and the WB are airing 30m shows 8-9p on Thursday night (and WB doesn’t do White House). Then yesterday around 4p, the White House re-thought the timing, and agreed to move the conference to 8p. That made it easier for the nets to bump their 8-9p programing (or slide it to 9p as was the case with CBS), while ABC just bailed on their movie. Of course, starting at 8p still doesn’t help with the ad money and the loss of a full hour in prime on a Thursday in May sweep, but this was a compromise after all. With all of that accommodating on the first Thursday night of the May sweep, the networks sure weren’t going to stick around beyond 8:59p, and sure enough CBS and NBC jumped away in time to launch Survivor and The Apprentice at 9p, 1 or 2 questions before the President finished up at 9:01:12p. Fox stuck it out until the final question, and then quickly got out of it in time to get to The Simple Life on time. ABC held on and also provided post-conference analysis. All of the cable news networks covered the conference, as did PBS. The thing of it is, the networks don’t have to carry the President if his message is not one a national emergency. The last three times the President interrupted primetime television were shortly after the 9/11 attack, in the days just before the Iraq war, and then a little over a year after the Iraq War began. And yet, who wants to go on record to say Survivor or The O.C. is more important than anything the President has to say … Just as the NAB Conference was getting underway a couple of weeks ago, the Parents Television Council (PTC) issued the results of a research study indicating the television networks were not providing TV ratings for some or all of their programs, which rendered the V-Chip technology useless in blocking shows parents didn’t want seen in their homes. L. Brent Bozell said in his column on the PTC website that NBC and its owned cable networks “have never put these warning letters on their screen” so their programming can’t be blocked. NBC yesterday reversed its policy of not rating its shows, and issued a statement from Bob Wright, Chairman/CEO of NBC Universal yesterday which reads in part: “We serve our viewers best by ensuring that they are fully informed about the content of our programs. We particularly want to provide information to parents so that they can judge the appropriateness of programing for their children. These changes provide our network and cable viewers with more frequent and more detailed information about our programs. By enhancing the visibility of content ratings, and raising awareness of the V-chip, we believe parents have the tools they need to make informed decisions.” * MORE GOOD STUFF *
A new unscripted series coming to ABC called The Scholar has the winner receiving a fully paid college education at a top university. Produced by Carsey-Werner, ABC has ordered up six episodes and has scheduled it to debut on Monday, June 5 at 8pm. Scripps Networks is launching HGTV in Hi-Def in January 2005. And if that’s not enough, Food Network will go Hi Def in 2nd qtr ’06. According to John Lansing, President of Scripps Networks, the two networks are doubling the hours of production originally planned to create the hi-def format, with an excess of 1,000 hours scheduled. HGTV will have 400 hours in Hi-Def with an additional 100 hours from DIY Network. Food will also have 400 hours of original content, and programming from Fine Living will be incorporated into one or both of the two new hi defs nets. A weak scatter market and an uncertain economy is signaling one of the more advertiser-friendly upfront seasons, one in which shifts of ad dollars from broadcast to cable might be relatively modest. That was the consensus of a group of media buyers and television executives at MediaLife’s Outfront Conference in New York on Wednesday. Not surprisingly given the traditional posturing that surrounds the upfront, the TV executives were a bit more bullish than the ad buyers. Still, no one expects a banner year overall. “The dollars are going to be relatively flat; it’s pretty much a share game at the moment,” said Charlie Rutman, the recently named CEO of Havas’ MPG. But ABC’s President of Sales Mike Shaw said he expects to have a good upfront, an easy statement to make for a network that is up by 16% among adults 18-49. Media buyers also warned that clients are looking increasingly more on the effectiveness of their ad buys, not just how many gross ratings points they get. — Andrew Grossman for Cynopsis Top 10 M-F Syndicated Strip Series for the week of April 11-17, 2005 ranked by HH Rtg Top 10 M-F Syndicated Strip Series for the week of April 11-17, 2005 ranked by A18-49 * EXECUTIVE MOVES*
