As Microsoft‘s self-imposed Saturday deadline approaches, CFO Chris Liddell reiterated the company’s position that it is ready to take its offer to buy Yahoo for $44.6 billion directly to shareholders. Microsoft reported that net income fell 11% during Q1 to $4.38 billion. But online and entertainment services and devices proved to be bright spots – up 40% and 68% respectively from a year ago.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Apparently getting the jitters about the music business, Starbucks announced it would cede control of its Hear Music label to the Concord Music Group. The company will continue to work with William Morris on suitable book and entertainment ventures, such as the iTunes Wi-fi promotion.
 
In what has been an on again – off again relationship over the years, CNET announced a new content and ad sharing agreement with Yahoo, distributing tech news and video content across Yahoo sites.
 
SMS publisher/advertiser 4Info is offering a range of services for this weekend’s NFL Draft.  Users can query “DRAFT” to get up to the minute coverage of the first round of the draft including draft pick number, draft team, players name and position. Query “DRAFTALERT” to receive a breaking alert as each pick is announced.
 
ABC.com‘s Watch a Video (10 actually) – Plant a Tree Promotion reached its goal of 1 million widget video views, resulting in 100,000 trees planted by the Arbor Day Foundation.
 
Call for Content: Nokia is enlisting the talents of Spike Lee to create a short film out of user generated videos, photos, music and writings. Demonstrate innovative ways to use a cell phone  for a chance to win a Nokia N95 phone or meet Spike in LA.


~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
White label mobile and IPTV streaming video service MobiTV raised an additional $5 million from Leader Ventures, according to VentureBeat, in addition to the $125 million it has already raised.  MobiTV says it now has more than 4 million subscribers and is adding 1 million new subs every 6 months.
 
Video search provider ClipBlast introduced a new “Playbox” feature to combine video search and syndication into a unified experience across various providers, reports VideoNuze. The application also provides a recommendation feature, linking to related 3rd party videos that are played directly from the site.
 
MySpace reorganized its application page to display available apps in a graphical interface organized alphabetically, by most installs and by most recently added. There are already 1,000 apps developed for the platform.
 
LeepFrog.tv launched an online music video discovery site offering video, audio sampling and full-length tracks for purchase from a range of labels including Interscope Records, Bad Boy Entertainment and Epic Records. The site will curate the platform to limit the focus to only 50 new releases at any one time.
 
Movie download service Jaman.com signed a deal with Arts Alliance America to offer titles such as Morgan Spurlock’s Super Size Me on the platform, reports THR.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
A Senate committee passed a resolution that rejects the proposal to relax media cross-ownership rules, which prevent ownership of a newspaper and TV station in the same market beyond the top 20 DMAs. President Bush has said he will veto the measure.
 
There’s nothing like a hit product to boost the bottom line. Nintendo more than doubled its operating profit to a record 487.2 billion yen ($4.7 billion) for the year ending March 31, thanks to strong global sales of Wii consoles and games. Up next for Nintendo in the U.S. is the exercise-oriented Wii Fit, launching May 19.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Google announced the launch of mobile image ads in several countries including the U.S., a graphic form of AdWords that appear on mobile websites and send users to a specific mobile webpage. 
 
Political ad creation tool SaysMe.TV raised Series A funding from several VC funds including Intel Capital, Prime Capital and Ashton Kutcher’s Katalyst Films. The company plans to use the money to expand beyond politics into other ad businesses.

Starbucks
moved CTO Chris Bruzzo to the Entertainment division as SVP and President of Starbucks Entertainment. He replaces Ken Lombard who has left the company.
 
Forbes.com upped Robert Pietsch to U.S. Advertising Director and Charles Yardley to Managing Director, EMEA and APAC, overseeing sales in Europe, The Middle East and Asia Pacific. Both will continue to report to Kevin Gentzel, Chief Advertising Officer, Forbes.com.
 
TVN Entertainment
hired Sandra Bourbeau as Director of Affiliate Marketing. She will report to Amy Kan, VP/Marketing for TVN Entertainment.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
You’ve got to love the Freedom of Information Act. Thanks to this far-reaching law, television writers, producers or concerned viewers actually get to see all the formal complaints lodged against programs, simply by asking to see the complaint forms. And now there’s a website called tvshowcomplaints.org that takes the heavy lifting out of the process of filing out the proper paperwork. Fill in the blanks of a simple form online and email it to the FCC or follow the instructions if you prefer snail mail. Check out the examples of complaints the commission gets every day for shows like The Daily Show, Law and Order: SVU and, of course, South Park. They give fascinating insight into what the FCC is up against.
