The NCAA made a 14-year deal with CBS Sports and Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. encompassing television, internet and wireless rights for the Division I Men’s Basketball Championship. The deal begins 2011 through 2024 and is worth $10.8 billion. The pact also has all games broadcasting live across four national networks CBS, TBS, TNT and truTV beginning next year for the first time in the 73-year history of the NCAA championship. Additionally, the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee passed a unanimous recommendation to its Board of Directors to increase the number of teams participating to 68 starting with the 2011 Championship. Details of the championship broadcast deal allows the opening, first- and second-round games shown on all four networks with CBS and Turner splitting coverage of the regional and semi-final games. CBS will air the regional finals, including the Final Four and the National Championship Game through 2015. Then starting in 2016, the regional finals will be split by CBS and Turner with the Final Four and the National Championship game flipping between CBS and TBS. Both CBS and Turner Broadcasting will be involved on the NCAA’s corporate marketing efforts. TLC is adding another food series to its roster as the network is premiering a six-episode series titled Best Food Ever narrated by John Goodman on May 3 at 10p. Best Food Ever travels the nation seeking popular dishes and restaurants such as the Mighty Cone in Austin, Johnny O’s in Chicago, Payne’s BBQ in Memphis and Ma Peche in New York all featured in the opening episode. Best Food Ever is produced by Hoff Productions with Michael Hoff and Ashley Adams executive producing. HBO granted a second season renewal for the half-hour comedy How to Make It in America created by Ian Edelman. The sophomore season will have eight episodes slated to premiere during summer 2011. MTV’s 16 and Pregnant finished off its current season Tuesday night by averaging a 2.3 rating among P12-34 in the 10p hour and additionally attracting 2.5 million total viewers. The full season averaged a 2.3 rating with P12-34 and 2.4 million total viewers. On Wednesday, the finale of Syfy’s Destination Truth at 10p drew in 1.2 million A18-49 viewers; 1.3 million A25-54 viewers and 1.9 million total viewers. CMT named Media Storm as its media buying and planning agency of record. Media Storm is charged with increasing CMT’s audience both on-air and online by expanding brand awareness and consumer engagement across multiple platforms. Walker Radio, Inc. sold radio station KZGL-FM/Flagstaff to Towers Investment Trust, Inc. led by Bill Brothers, Principal. Morning News Weekly Average Ratings (week of April 12, 2010) Ron Scalera, 49, EVP/Creative Director with CBS Marketing Group died suddenly on Wednesday in Los Angeles. Ron joined CBS in 1997 in the role as SVP/Creative Director of Advertising and Promotion creating branding for the network such as “America’s Most Watched Network.” He also was involved with many launch campaigns for series including the CSI franchise, NCIS, The Big Bang Theory, The Good Wife and most recently on behalf of Undercover Boss. He was upped to his current position with the CBS Marketing Group in 2004. Ron’s television career began at FOX, starting as Junior On-Air Writer/Producer at WNYW-TV in New York and later from 1994-1997 he served as SVP/On-Air Promotion for FOX Broadcasting Company. Ron is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, and two young children, his mother and a brother. Memorial service arrangements are pending. Fabio Ostroviesky, a writer/producer working for HBO in New York, died last Sunday night due to a heart attack. Fabio is survived by his mother and a sister. AMC cast Mireille Enos (HBO’s Big Love) for the lead role as Sarah in the network’s new original drama The Killing (wt). The project is based on a Danish series, Forbrydelsen, about the murder of a young girl and the police investigation. The Killing is produced by Fox Television Studios and Mikkel Bondesen executive produces for Fuse Entertainment. Production on the pilot commences May 10 in Vancouver. Showtime acquired the online series Web Therapy from Lisa Kudrow. Showtime picked up all 45 short-form episodes that are five to 10 minutes in length each and will combine three for each 30m episode. The premium network also asked for additional content such as interstitials to fill in between each episode. Showtime will premiere the series late this year where Kudrow plays a therapist, Fiona Wallace offering advice via webcam. Kudrow produced the series in conjunction with L Studio. Emmy Award-winning actor Hal Holbrook will appear in a four-episode run on FX’s Sons of Anarchy starting with the third season premiere opening in September. Holbrook will play the father of Gemma played by Katey Sagal. Production on the 13-episode season three begins today. Holbrook’s wife Dixie Carter died earlier this month due to complications involving endometrial cancer. ~ RATINGS ~
Wednesday A18-49 Analysis: FOX was on top Wednesday with a 5.9/17 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. FOX was well-ahead of the pack at 8p with American Idol at 5.6/17 while UNIV’s Hasta que el Dinero Nos Separe was a distant #2 with 2.0/6. American Idol on FOX pushed its ratings to a 6.1/17 during 9p and a double serving of ABC’s Modern Family with repeats averaged a 2.1/5 in second place. At 10p, FOX’s American Idol spilled over until 1030p delivering a 6.0/16 and NBC’s Law & Order: SVU posted a 2.8/8 for the full hour. Oxygen Media elevated Scott Lewers to VP/Multiplatform Program Planning and Acquisitions, effective immediately. Scott will now oversee the Oxygen Media program planning team in addition to planning and implementing long-term scheduling strategies across all platforms. Scott also takes the lead on the network’s acquisition strategy by purchasing all series and movie rights. Scott will report to Jason Klarman, GM. Kathryn Szumowski was hired by Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS, Inc.) in the role as Senior Media Director/Turner Media Group, the company’s internal media group. Kathryn will oversee digital media planning for all of Turner’s domestic networks and will further be in charge of non-digital media planning for CNN, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim and Turner Sports. Based in Atlanta, Kathryn reports to Dennis Camlek, VP/Strategic Media Planning, Turner Media Group. Full-service advertising agency, Dailey tagged Matt Stefl as SVP/Director of Planning where he will spearhead the agency’s communications planning practice. Based in Los Angeles, Matt will report to Bruce Miller, CEO. Previously, Matt worked for Fraser Communications in L.A. as Director/Strategic Planning and Research. Grey Group promoted Amy Tunick to the position of President/Alliance, the entertainment and lifestyle marketing agency of New York-based Grey Group. Amy replaces John Eckel who left the agency. Bob Ramsey announced he is stepping down from his position as VP/GM of Tribune-owned FOX affiliate, KTXL/Sacramento effective today. Bob has been with Tribune Broadcasting for 17 years.
