Jimmy Fallon sticking around on NBC’s late night schedule as the network renewed Late Night with Jimmy Fallon for a third season through March 2012. This move by NBC’s keeps all of its late night programs stable for the next season as Last Call with Carson Daly was recently reupped and Jay Leno will remain on The Tonight Show. In this last year, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon saw its ratings rise by 16% to an average of 1.8 million total viewers.
A new primetime novela Dona Bella (Lady Beautiful) debuts next Monday on TeleFutura Network at 7p with a two-hour opening episode. The novela tells the tragic story of beautiful Bella (Zharick Leon) who is robbed of her innocence and kidnapped by the town’s wealthy overlord, Roman (Marcelo Buquet) and is forced to live in his mansion as one of his mistresses and in the process loses her true love, Antonio (Fabian Rios).
For 52 years, CBS provides coverage of the NFL and has a new season totaling 106 games for 17 weeks of regular-season coverage. CBS also carries post-season games and an AFC Wild Card playoff game scheduled for January 8, 2012, two divisional playoff games on January 14 and 15 and the AFC Championship Game on January 22. The NFL on CBS begins with its Week 1 coverage on September 11 at 12 noon with The NFL Today, CBS’ pre-game studio show followed by numerous single-header games at 1p. Additionally, CBS Sports will kick off the NFL pre-season schedule August 28 at 8p with a live primetime game with the Super Bowl champs, the Green Bay Packers versus the Indianapolis Colts. Sophomore roll out of A&E Network’s original scripted drama series The Glades opens June 5 at 10p. Season two has 13 one-hour episodes starring Matt Passmore, Kiele Sanchez, Carlos Gomez and Michelle Hurd. During its frosh season, The Glades became the most-watched drama series in A&E’s history with an average of 3.1 million total viewers.
US English-language national network, Mnet aiming at Asian Americans and fans of Asian pop culture, adds two new original series to its schedule this spring:
- Short Notice Weekly, one-hour series is hosted by actress/comedian Lilan Bowden and highlights Asian American short films and interviews with the filmmakers. Premieres April 26 at 8p.
- Beats Per Mnet Daily series showcases the latest in Asian pop culture surrounding music, fashion, toys, film and food. The show will air Monday-Friday at 7p and 10p and is produced at Mnet’s Los Angeles studio. Stand-up comedian Paul Kim and actress/model Yvonne Lu host the series that also includes studio interviews, on-location segments, celebrity interviews and more. Premieres May 16.
In the midst of the 2011 Upfront season, Nielsen released several trends in television viewing:
- 38% of all TV households in the US have a DVR.
- Mobile Video viewing has grown 41% since last year. The biggest user group is teens between 12-17 years who watch 7 hours, 13 minutes of mobile video each month.
- In January 2011, 143.9 million Americans viewed video online.
- Television advertising totaled $69 billion in 2010.
One of the comedy writers behind the beloved I Love Lucy series, Madelyn Pugh Davis died on Wednesday at her home in Bel-Air. She was 90. Ms. Davis worked as part of a writing team with Bob Carroll Jr. and the pair wrote most of the I Love Lucy episodes. Prior to the television show, Ms. Davis and Mr. Carroll worked on Lucille Ball’s CBS radio show “My Favorite Husband” which provided a springboard for Ms. Ball’s transition to television. Ms. Davis, Mr. Carroll and Jess Oppenheimer wrote the pilot episode for I Love Lucy which premiered in 1951 and the team of Davis-Carroll remained with the show during its six season run. Later, Ms. Davis and Mr. Carroll continued to work with Ms. Ball as writers on her other TV series including The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour, The Lucy Show and Here’s Lucy. Later, the team worked on the 1970s comedy series Alice.
BET and Centric presented their 2011 Upfront presentation at the Best Buy Theater in New York on Wednesday.
BET: The network continues its focus on original scripted content with a new sitcom:
- Reed Between the Lines Two married professionals, Alex an English professor and Carla, a psychologist juggle modern married life along with being parents to teenage twins and an outspoken 7-year old daughter. Tracee Ellis Ross (Girlfriends), Malcolm-Jamal Warner (The Cosby Show), Anna Maria Horsford (Amen) and Melissa De Sousa (The Best Man) star in BET’s original scripted comedy. Series will premiere 4Q 2011.
Next year, BET debuts a new series about Hip-Hop:
- The Message: The History of Hip-Hop Four-part series examines the pop culture phenomenon of Hip-Hop over the last 30 years. Series scheduled to premiere 3Q 2012.
BET returns six series to its schedule:
- 106 & Park The series continues after ten years and more than 2000 episodes hosted by Terrence and Rocsi. New interactive segments are added for the new season.
- The Mo’Nique Show Late night series is back for a third season hosted by Mo’Nique.
- The Wendy Williams Show Hour-long talk show hosted by Wendy Williams.
- The Game Scripted comedy is going into its fifth season slated to premiere 1Q 2012.
- Let’s Stay Together BET recently announced the second season renewal of this original series scheduled to premiere 1Q 2012.
- Sunday’s Best The gospel competition show is hosted by Kirk Franklin with celebrity judges Pastor Donnie McClurkin and Mary Mary. New season scheduled to premiere 2Q 2011.
Centric serves up four returning series for its schedule:
- The Hot 10 Countdown Chuck Nice hosts this countdown show aimed at the adult contemporary Centric audience.
- Soul Train Awards The iconic brand is scheduled to premiere 4Q 2011.
- As Written Viewers get an up-close look at today’s soul singers as they reveal their creative process for new projects.
- Inside Series escorts viewers into the lives of today’s musical masters who have transformed the musical landscape.

Sci-fi series Battlestar Galactica resurrected on BBC America as the network made a deal with NBC Universal Domestic TV Distribution to pick up all 80 hours of the series. BBC America’s acquisition includes a two-part miniseries and seasons one through four. The network bows Battlestar Galactica June 18 at 7p and will include the series as part of its Supernatural Saturday lineup. Battlestar Galactica was produced by Universal Cable Productions and Sky One (UK) and originally aired on Syfy from 2003 to 2009.
Likely inspired by her role as judge on FOX’s American Idol, Jennifer Lopez is partnering with Idol producer Simon Fuller and his XIX Entertainment to pitch a new project Que Viva (wt) to broadcast networks. The series, in an early development phase, will feature Lopez and her husband Marc Antony as they tour Latin America in search of undiscovered musical talent.
New first-run syndicated strip reality dating show, Excused from CBS Television Distribution (CTD) and produced by Renegade 83 started production this week in Los Angeles. Excused is being shot at a contemporary-style home in Encino, the site for the contestants’ dates. Iliza Shlesinger is the host of Excused slated to premiere this September which has been cleared to air mainly in late fringe and access time periods. Canada’s Slice network selected businessman/philanthropist, W. Brett Wilson to host its new series Risky Business. The half-hour series with 13 episodes will launch this fall. The series is casting for amateur investors who are interested in appearing on the show and making big money as well as entrepreneurs who are offering high-risk and high-reward investment opportunities. The series is produced by 11 Television in association with Slice.

Wednesday A18-49 Analysis: FOX took a slight dip week to week though still dominated Wednesday night at 5.9/16 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. FOX and American Idol posted a top-rated 6.8/20 at 8p with CBS’ Survivor: Redemption Island secure in second place at 3.1/9. FOX led at 9p, too, with a combination of American Idol and Breaking In averaging a 5.2/13 followed by ABC’s comedies Modern Family and Cougar Town averaging a 3.1/8. ABC had a close call though prevailed at 10p with double episodes of Happy Endings averaging a 1.7/5 while CBS’ Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior repeat and Univision’s Triunfo del Amor tied for #2 at 1.7/4 each.

Mike Beale named to the newly-minted role of Director/International Formats with ITV Studios. Mike will direct the strategy which will guide the studio’s growth through new formats. Prior to this appointment, Mike was VP/International Television Production at NBC Universal.
Sean Bennington takes on the new role as Director/Distribution with Crown Media Networks, the newly-formed umbrella unit encompassing Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel under parent company Crown Media Holdings Inc. Sean will head the distribution growth of Hallmark Channel, Hallmark Channel HD, Hallmark Movie Channel SD and Hallmark Movie Channel HD within his assigned territory.
