~ MORE STUFF ~

Season two of Hollywood Treasure joins Syfy’s schedule starting May 22 at 10p.  The series delves into the world of show business and pop culture memorabilia featuring collectibles expert Joe Maddalena owner of Profiles in History.  The first two episodes in season two will highlight a costume Whitney Houston wore in The Bodyguard film; items from the TV series Lost; the General Lee from Dukes of Hazzard and more.  Hollywood Treasure is produced by Gurney Productions.

VH1 renewed its sketch comedy series, Stevie TV starring Stevie Ryan for a second season.  The series parodies pop culture and Ryan offers her version of comedy in a fast-paced irreverent style along with music videos, celebrity impersonations, fake commercials and more.  Season two of Stevie TV will be back on VH1 this fall and is produced by New Wave Entertainment.  The season one finale of Stevie TV airs this Sunday at 11p.

Martha Stewart is set to star in a new weekly PBS television show launching this fall called Martha Stewart’s Cooking School.  The series is described as a teaching series inspired by one of her books and will be presented in association with WETA/Washington airing on PBS stations nationwide.  The half-hour series will watch as Stewart demonstrates classic cooking techniques and cooking basics. 

Downton Abbey’s Hugh Bonneville is starring in a new comedy airing on BBC America called Twenty Twelve.  The series premieres June 30 in the US as part of BBC America’s Saturday night comedy block the Ministry of Laughs.  The documentary style comedy centers on the team in charge of delivering the London Olympics to the world and also stars Jessica Hynes, Olivia Colman, Amelia Bullmore, Vincent Franklin and Karl Theobald with narration by David Tennant.  The 12-part, half-hour series is a BBC production, distributed by BBC Worldwide and has been acquired by BBC America.

Univision’s series Aqui y Ahora (Here and Now) will debut this Saturday in a new time at 7p.

A third season of Auction Kings is on tap for Discovery Channel beginning April 25 at 10p.  The series follows Paul Brown and his Gallery 63 crew as they auction off a variety of rare treasures and bizarre objects.  Auction Kings is from Authentic Entertainment, Inc. for Discovery Channel.

UPFRONT 2012: Ovation

Yesterday morning, Ovation hosted a breakfast for journalists for its Upfront to introduce its new original projects.  Ovation emphasized its new tagline: Art No Limits. Art No Boundaries.  The network highlighted the fact that it is now in 51 million homes with a median age of 47.

One new series on Ovation’s docket is the dance competition series titled A Chance to Dance.  Produced by Legacy Productions and Nigel and Simon Lythgoe, A Chance to Dance is the network’s first reality competition series and it follows two well-known British contemporary dancers and choreographers, William Trevitt and Michael Nunn as they travel the country looking for the best dancers to form a new American dance company.  The seven-episode one-hour series is currently in production and will premiere August 17. 

Furthermore, Ovation is adding new series to its destination nights which consist of Sunday nights dubbed Artists & Icons featuring movies and documentaries about artists who have set the standard in their medium; Movies to Stand Up For on Thursday nights featuring critical favorites and movies worth a second look; and Saturday nights will showcase the network’s scripted originals and premieres including made for TV movies, miniseries and series called The Best You’ve Never Seen.  The next four new series will join Ovation’s Saturday lineup:

  • Cloudstreet is a period series set in Perth, Western Australia in the 1940s and 1950s where two families, who have each suffered separate catastrophes, flee to the city and end up living in the same house.  Cloudstreet debuts April 28 at 10p and will air on consecutive Saturday nights through June 2. 
  • The Runaway, from author Martina Cole, is about star-crossed lovers who struggle for redemption surrounded by crime and corruption in the East End of London.  The Runaway premieres June 9 at 10p.
  • Bouquet of Barbed Wire is a psychological thriller surrounding Andrea Newman’s novel about a father’s obsessive love for his daughter.  Debuts July 21 at 10p.
  • What to Do When Someone Dies is a miniseries based on the novel by Nicci French and centers on Ellie Manning and the double life she leads.  Premieres August 11 at 10p. 

The original Barnabas Collins, actor Jonathan Frid died on April 13 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada at the age of 87.  Mr. Frid is best known for his portrayal of the vampire Barnabas in the ABC soap opera Dark Shadows which ran from 1967 to 1971.  Mr. Frid also appeared in the feature film based on the TV series titled House of Dark Shadows (1970) as well as other horror genre films.  He had also recently made a cameo appearance in Tim Burton’s theatrical film adaptation of Dark Shadows, premiering May 11, with Johnny Depp playing Barnabas. 

~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE & CLEARANCE ~

Launching today, NHK World TV is a stand-alone 24-hour English language TV news channel produced by Japan’s only public independent broadcasting corporation, NHK.  The network, offering Japan and Asian news coverage 24/7, is now available to more than seven million viewers in the New York City area as a digital broadcast via a dedicated, over-the-air channel on Regional News Network (WRNN).  NHK World TV is also available in hi-def for Time Warner Cable subscribers in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Channel 792 in Bergen County, NJ and in the Hudson Valley.

CBS Television Distribution (CTD) renewed the first-run syndicated strip series Excused for a second season.  The 30m dating strip airs on WWOR/New York, KCAL/Los Angeles and WCIU/Chicago.  Hosted by Iliza Shlesinger, Excused is produced by Renegade 83 Entertainment.

  • Splitsville (wt) is about high-powered divorce lawyers who battle each other when millions of dollars are at stake while trying to avoid the same outcome of their wealthy clients.  From BASE Productions.
  • Tone It Up (wt) features two best friends and roommates who suddenly become the “it girls” of the fitness industry after launching their popular Tone It Up website.  Fishbowl Worldwide Media is producing.
  • Untitled Male Model Project (wt) will follow successful men who are male models even through their careers are short-lived.  Produced by Done and Done Productions.

George Lopez will host and serve as matchmaker for FOX’s upcoming new dating series Take Me Out.   The series follows 30 single women as they search for their perfect match.  Take Me Out debuts June 7 at 8p

Wednesday A18-49 Analysis:  FOX was successful Wednesday winning among A18-49 at 4.8/14 among A18-49, according to final and CBS’ Survivor: One World took second place at 2.8/9.  The second hour of FOX’s American Idol easily stayed in the lead at 9p with a 4.9/14 while ABC’s comedies Modern Family and Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt. 23 came in second with an average of 3.4/9.  Then at 10p, ABC posted a 2.3/6 for Revenge winning the hour over next in line La Que No Podia Amar at 1.9/5.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Global Broadcast Summit (GBS) Chair, Michael McEwen was named Director General of North American Broadcasters Association (NABA).  The announcement was made in New York yesterday on behalf of the organization’s board of directors.  Michael was previously with Canadian Broadcaster CBC where he served as SVP until 1997. 

Susan Claxton was hired at MEC as Senior Partner/Content Integration of MEC Entertainment, the agency’s programming and content creation unit.  In this new role, Susan will be responsible for identifying, creating and implementing brand integrations for MEC’s clients in addition to joining together integrated marketing programs involving content across multiple platforms.  Susan joins a team including Evan Fleischer, Senior Partner who will now manage strategy and original content.  Susan and Evan are based in New York and both report to Chet Fenster, Managing Partner, MEC Entertainment.

Shine America added Joe Schlosser to its executive team as SVP/Communications.  Joe will manage Shine America’s corporate branding, trade and consumer media relations, programming publicity, events and talent relations.  Joe will additionally serve as the company’s chief press officer and as its communications contact with Shine Group’s communications team.  Prior to this appointment, Joe worked for NBC spanning ten years most recently as SVP/NBC Entertainment Television Publicity. 

Bonnier Corp. named Julie Smartz as VP/GM of Brand Development.  Julie will head brand licensing, retail development and strategic partnerships.  Julie joins the company from Source Interlink Media where she was VP/GM of Brand Development.

European-based entertainment network, RTL Group added Cecile Frot-Coutaz as its new CEO of FremantleMedia.  Cecile’s position begins July 1 and is based in London.  Cecile will succeed Tony Cohen who will step down from the position to concentrate on his non-executive duties.
