AMC and producer Lionsgate officially made a deal with Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner to continue as showrunner for the series’ previously announced fifth season as well as a sixth season. Weiner inked a new long-term agreement with Lionsgate which points to a possible seventh season of Mad Men, the 1960s original drama set in New York’s advertising world.
Octogenarian Betty White and NBC are partnering on a new hidden-camera comedy series Off Their Rockers produced by Kinetic Content. NBC ordered a dozen 30m episodes of Off Their Rockers which is based on an international series titled Benidorm Bastards, originally produced by SHELTER in Belgium. The premise of the series follows a group of seven senior citizens as they play pranks on unsuspecting young people. Distributor SevenOne International has sold the series to more than 20 territories including France, Italy, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Scandinavia and South Korea. For the US version, White, Kinetic Content’s Chris Coelen, Matilda Zoltowski and SHELTER’s Tim Van Aelst will executive produce. White is no stranger to NBC after having starred in a seven-season run of The Golden Girls for the network and a recent hosting appearance on SNL which earned her another Emmy.
A fourth season is not on tap for HBO’s drama series In Treatment helmed by Gabriel Byrne. The network may resurrect Byrne’s character, psychotherapist Paul Weston and the conversations he has with a revolving group of patients in some other form though HBO has not officially stated how this would happen. The third season finale episode in December averaged 279,000 total viewers which was almost half as much as the 446,000 viewers tuning in for the series premiere.

Also on Wednesday, the season eight finale of Bravo’s Top Chef All-Stars tallied 2.77 million total viewers and 1.95 million among A18-49.
Major League Soccer’s New York Red Bulls and MSG Networks forged a new multi-year deal allowing MSG Networks to remain in place as the local telecast home of the Red Bulls. MSG Networks holds the telecast rights to the Red Bulls since 1996 and for this season will telecast 24 out of 32 regular season games, two more than last season and all produced in hi-def. MSG Networks also produces pre- and post-game shows for some of the Red Bulls games.
At the end of April, Warner Bros., Fox, Sony and Universal along with DirecTV are launching a premium VOD service which will allow consumers to watch a movie 60 days after it was released in the theatres. The cost of this VOD service is $29.99 per movie with the film available for viewing during a 48-hour period. The initial titles offered include Sony’s Just Go With It, Fox’s Cedar Rapids and Warner Bros.’ Unknown. DirecTV will offer this VOD service to its customers nationwide while Comcast and VUDU will offer it in select markets at first. Paramount is not participating in this premium VOD service because of the threat of piracy.
Showtime tapped Parker Posey and Hugh Dancy to appear in multiple episodes for the second season of The Big C slated to premiere June 27. Posey was hired for four eps as Poppy, an older woman who starts an unlikely relationship with Cathy’s teenage son Adam (Gabriel Basso). Dancy will be in at least six episodes playing Lee, a charming cancer patient who befriends Cathy (Laura Linney) as they both try an experimental drug trial.
Fresh off the short-lived FOX comedy Running Wilde, Will Arnett landed a starring role on NBC’s untitled comedy pilot playing opposite Christina Applegate. The project, executive produced by SNL’s Lorne Michaels, offers an irreverent look at parenthood though the eyes of a sharp-tongued working mom (Applegate) and her stay-at-home husband and other opinionated parents. Maya Rudolph was also recently cast as a co-worker and best friend to Applegate’s character.
New Orleans-set drama series, Treme is ready to debut season two with 11 episodes on HBO April 24. Two actors that had recurring roles during the inaugural season, David Morse and India Ennega were promoted to series regulars. Jon Seda (The Pacific) also joins the sophomore season as Nelson Hildago, a character from Dallas who comes to the city in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Furthermore, food adventurer/author Anthony Bourdain and host of Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations joins the writing staff for the new season.
A handful of new scripted series are approved by MTV:
- Hit Brit comedy The Inbetweeners, about four suburban teens, granted a full season order of 12 episodes with an expected launch in 2012.
- FriendZone, from the producers of Jersey Shore this series has teens asking their best friend to help them prep for a blind date. Later, it is revealed the date is for the two of them. 495 Productions is producing.

- The Substitute is a game show where substitute teacher (Jon Gabrus) surprises unsuspecting students by turning their classroom into a game show.
- Money From Strangers is another game show format with host Jeff Dye and a group of guest comedians who persuade unwitting contestants to pull pranks on strangers.
Danny Comden made a blind script agreement via the Tannenbaum Co./Paramount for CBS Television Studios, per THR. Comden is also on board to star in CBS’ untitled sports radio comedy, produced by Eric and Kim Tannenbam in association with CBS Television Studios which also stars Damon Wayans and Eliza Dushku.
