It’s not a surprise, but it’s official: AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead had the highest-rated first season of any series in cable history across total viewers and all key demos in Live+3 ratings. Fear averaged 11.2 million viewers, 7.3 million A18-49 and 7.2 million A25-54. “When we set out to launch a companion series to the #1 show on television, there were truly many things to fear, beyond ‘Fear’itself,” said Charlie Collier, president of AMC, Sundance TV and AMC Studios. “To see this show stand alone, break through and set records as a unique piece of storytelling is very gratifying and a tribute to great creative talent.” AMC is also home to numbers two and three in the ranking, The Walking Dead in 2010 and this year’s Better Call Saul.
CBS is saying goodbye to summer series Extant after two seasons, but not star Halle Berry. “CBS, Halle Berry and the producers have decided to conclude the Extant story after last season’s exciting and fitting conclusion,” said Glenn Geller, President of CBS Entertainment. “Extant played an important role in expanding CBS’ lineup of original scripted programming in the summer. We are proud of the show’s success on the network, as well as its popularity on Amazon Prime Video. We also want to thank the incomparable Halle Berry for her commitment and support for the series and look forward to working with her on our next project together.” That project would be Legalease, a drama in development which Berry will exec produce through her 606 Films.
NBC gave Blindspot a full-season, 22-episode order. Averaging a 2.7 rating among A18-49 and 9.6 million viewers in Live+SD, the drama is the top-rated new series in the young adult demo.
Fox snipped freshman Minority Report’s 13-episode order to ten. Last week the thriller hit a low of .7 among A18-49. The series, which had been slated for a 10-ep run in the fall with the remaining installments held until later in the season, airs Mondays at 9p.
Fusion’s gearing up for Election 2016, assigning reporters to cover specific issues pertinent to its young, diverse audience, and adding Erin McClam as senior political editor. McClam comes from NBC News. “In addition to covering core issues, members of Fusion’s team will fan out across the country at points over the next year to cover how the election is playing out on the ground in under-covered and underserved communities,” said Hillary Frey, executive editor. “Their stories will be shared with our audience across all our platforms ranging from Snapchat, Instagram, and Vine to our TV network and Fusion.net.”
Make room for another late-nighter: TLC series Late Night Joy (wt), hosted by The View’s Joy Behar, launches Wednesday, November 4 at 11p. Behar pal Susie Essman (Curb Your Enthusiasm) and others gather in Behar’s NYC apartment for weekly gabfests. True Entertainment and Behar’s JoyBee produce.
EXCLUSIVE: Grit acquired and will premiere all five Rocky movies every weeknight this week at 8p, starting tonight with the original. Rocky II airs Tuesday, October 13, Rocky III airs Wednesday…you get the picture. Male-targeting Grit is owned by Katz Broadcasting.
Al Jazeera America expands its morning news coverage starting today, with retitled weekday broadcast Your World This Morning starting at 7a. It likely won’t be the last tweak to the sked. “We’re constantly evaluating all of the programs we offer our viewers, making sure that we are reaching the right audiences at the right time, across all platforms,” said Kate O’Brian, net president.
