   IN THE NEWS

Station group owner Sinclair has proposed buying all the outstanding shares of rival EW Scripps that it does not already own for $7 per share. According to an SEC filing submitted Monday, Sinclair has acquired a 9.9% stake in Scripps and has entered into acquisition discussions with the company. Although FCC regulations limit station owners to a national audience reach of 39%, Sinclair indicated this would not be an obstacle. “We are confident that under existing rules, including the national cap, the transaction can be completed in a timely manner with only limited, targeted divestitures,” the company stated in the filing.

As opposed to Nextstar’s pending $6.2 billion acquisition of Tegna – a deal that would increase Nextstar’s reach to well over the FCC’s limit. While President Trump opposes raising the cap, posting on Truth Social that Nextstar’s deal would “Allow the Radical Left Networks to ‘enlarge,’” Nexstar offered a different take. “We agree with President Trump that the status quo is no longer acceptable, nor should the government do anything to strengthen the stranglehold of legacy media and Big Tech on the marketplace of ideas,” said the company in a statement on Monday. “Those platforms already reach into every pocket, purse, and backpack in America, and the best way to disrupt their monopolistic power is to allow local broadcasters an opportunity to compete on a level playing field. Americans want more access to local news and a variety of voices without the filter of the coastal elites.”

Fall sports and a new broadcast season fueled substantial gains for traditional media companies and a reshuffling of rankings in Nielsen’s Media Distributor Gauge for October. Disney achieved the largest share increase, adding 0.7 share points as its overall viewership climbed 7% month-over-month. Hallmark posted the largest increase in watch-time in October as viewership rose 11% compared to September. Hallmark’s growth was powered by an uptick in movie viewership.

Nielsen has expanded its FAST channel measurement deal to include measurement of Lionsgate’s Worldwide Television Distribution Group and Debmar-Mercury’s recently launched digital network, MovieSphere Gold. “Nielsen’s new measurement capability will give us a comprehensive view of our audience across traditional and OTA local affiliates via more than 170 stations nationwide for the first time, giving us a major competitive advantage and fueling the growth of MovieSphere Gold,” said Derek Turk, SVP of Ratings & Research, Lionsgate.

There’s a dramatic generational divide when it comes to how consumers perceive advertising relevance, according to a study from MX8 Labs. While 69% of consumers overall report seeing at least somewhat relevant ads, 41% of Millennials found ads “very” relevant, compared to just 24% of the general population. Meanwhile, 47% of Boomers found ads “not very” relevant.

Consumer attitudes toward personalized advertising is more complicated – while half of consumers embrace personalized ads, concerns about invasiveness remain significant. Half of those surveyed reported preferring personalization, but among those who find personalization invasive, 57% feel less positive about brands. Key takeaway: “Understanding the balance is essential for crafting strategies that respect privacy while delivering value.”

Ryan Murphy’s “All’s Fair” has been renewed for a second season at Hulu. The Kim Kardashian-starring legal drama got scorching reviews but was the biggest Hulu Original scripted premiere in three years, drawing 3.3 million viewers in its first three days.

   PRODUCTION

Corey Stall (“Billions”) and Julia Stiles (“10 Things I Hate About You”) are set to star in “Recap,” an indie psychological thriller series from K Period Media. The eight-parter was created by Adam Glass (“Supernatural”), Andrew Dabb (“Supernatural”), and Justin S. Lee (“Resident Evil”). “At K Period Media, we are committed to enabling brilliant, singular creative voices to realize their vision without compromise,” said Steward. “’Recap’ exemplifies this ethos – by fully financing and producing the series, we’re empowering an extraordinary team of storytellers to deliver something truly special for audiences who crave premium genre content. The speed at which we’ve moved is a testament to what this model makes possible: we greenlit production a mere five months after commencing the writer’s room. That kind of rapid timeline could only have happened with this approach.”
