IN THE NEWS

DISH Network is undergoing another round of layoffs. “Like most businesses, we continually evaluate and make adjustments to ensure we’re set up for long-term success,” stated the company, adding that over 500 employees were impacted in Colorado, site of DISH’s headquarters. “We made the difficult decision to part ways with some team members due to changing business demands on some teams. Impacted employees will be notified by the end of the week.” DISH is preparing to merge with satellite communications provider EchoStar.

Employees at Vice Media Group are also being hit with layoffs. In addition to job eliminations due to the end of production of shows including “Vice on Showtime” and “Vice News Tonight,” a restructuring will take five lines of business and transition them to two: Studios, Television and Distribution; and Publishing, News and Creative Services. “The combined business units provide a more cohesive, collaborative and focused structure that will enable us to better amplify our content across multiple products and distribution opportunities,” said Vice CEOs Bruce Dixon and Hozefa Lokhandwala in a note to staff, adding, “It will also allow us to streamline our overall corporate infrastructure, reducing overhead across the business.”

SAG-AFTRA members have put down the picket signs and are ready to party. In announcing that the union’s negotiating committee unanimously approved a contract valued at over one billion dollars, the committee said, “We will be in touch in the coming days with information about celebration gatherings around the country.” The new contract includes “minimum compensation increases, unprecedented provisions for consent and compensation that will protect members from the threat of AI, and for the first time establishes a streaming participation bonus,” said the committee. While the deal does not include a share of revenue from streaming platform, a major goal in negotiations, it included a “streaming participation bonus” worth about $40 million annually.

While there is a big sigh of relief over the strike’s conclusion, its impact will linger, warns The Entertainment Community Fund, which distributed over $11 million to over 5000 people working in film and television. “Many have back rent that is owed and are facing potential eviction,” reads a statement from the group. “Others have lost health insurance and have additional medical expenses, with others needing increased mental health support. Coupled with the lasting impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic – a 2023 survey of more than 4,000 people who sought support from the Entertainment Community Fund during the Covid-19 pandemic found that more than 50% of respondents are still having difficulty finding employment – these are dire times for the industry.”

Following the divestment of Kantar Public from Kantar Group in September 2022, the company is rebranding across Europe, Asia Pacific and the US as Verian. “Our business works across all areas of the policy cycle, from research, program evaluation, behavior change, through to the creative execution of public communication,” said Dr. Michelle Harrison, Global CEO at Verian. “But at our heart, across all our diverse teams and continents, our people are in the profession of seeking truth for their clients. Through their research and consulting, on behalf of public policy makers, they are powering decisions that shape the world. That is how we capture our new brand purpose.”

Disney, on track to become sole owner of Hulu, is launching a beta app in December that combines Disney+ and Hulu, revealed Disney CEO Bob Iger during the company’s earnings call. “We remain on track to roll out a more unified one-app experience domestically, making extensive general entertainment content available to bundle subscribers via Disney+,” said Iger. An official launch is expected around late March. Disney, which currently owns 33% of Hulu, has a deal to buy out NBCUniversal’s share.
