The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB), along with a coalition of leading trade associations, filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the Federal Trade Commission challenging the agency’s changes to rules governing subscription renewals. IAB is joined in the lawsuit by the Electronic Security Association (ESA) and the National Cable Television Association (NCTA). The suit asserts that the FTC failed to adhere to proper procedures, including conducting a comprehensive economic analysis. “In multiple filings, we’ve simply asked the FTC to follow the law and Constitution when issuing major regulations,” said Lartease Tiffith, IAB’s Executive Vice President for Public Policy. “Instead, the FTC has introduced overly broad rules, bypassing public input and congressional mandates. While IAB supports reasonable regulation, these new rules threaten a business model essential to companies of all sizes across various industries—and to consumers.”

GroupM announced the company has exceeded its pledge to double annual media spend in women’s sports advertising, securing 25 first-to-market opportunities with Disney, NBCUniversal, Paramount, and YouTube, among others, for the 2024-2025 broadcast year. Partnerships include:

Andrea Mitchell will give up her daily noontime show on MSNBC following the presidential inauguration in 2025, she told viewers Tuesday. Mitchell will retain her roles as NBC News’ chief Washington correspondent and chief foreign affairs correspondent and will assume a broader role within NBCU’s news operations, reporting for both NBC News and MSNBC. She has anchored a weekday program on the network since 2008. “After sixteen years of being in the anchor chair every day, I want time to do more of what I love the most: more connecting, listening and reporting in the field, especially as whoever is elected next week is going to undertake the monumental task of handling two foreign wars and the political divisions here at home,” she said on her MSNBC show “Andrea Mitchell Reports.”

The 73rd edition of “Miss Universe” will be hosted once again by Jacqueline Bracamontes and Danilo Carrera and will air from the Mexico City Arena on November 16 on Telemundo. Carlos Adyan, Julia Gama and Andrea Meza will join as commentators of the event.

The History Channel will premiere its new nonfiction series “Mysteries Unearthed with Danny Trejo” on December 6 at 10p. Hosted by Trejo (“Machete,” “Heat,” “Spy Kids”), the eight-episode series, produced by A+E Factual Studios™ group, will reveal the history behind some of the world’s most significant discoveries.

   STREAMING

Streaming technology company Brightcove will expand its recently launched Brightcove AI Suite with a new AI-Text-to-Video pilot in Q1 2025 and add additional capabilities to its AI-Metadata Optimizer solution with AI-automated thumbnail creation and video chaptering. Brightcove unveiled its AI Suite in September and so far says the pilot program has generated strong interest from hundreds of customers.

STARZ and YouTube have reached a multi-year extension to their carriage deal that includes additional bundling opportunities and special offers. “We are excited to deepen our partnership with YouTube TV, the fastest-growing Pay TV distributor,” said Alison Hoffman, President, STARZ Networks. “This partnership further enhances our ability to deliver STARZ’s extensive collection of premium programming to broader audiences at an exceptional value.”

Crunchyroll has reached a new distribution deal with YouTube Primetime Channels and will launch sometime before the end of 2024 in the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Australia.

   SPORTS REPORT

For the second straight year, ESPN, Disney, the “Simpsons” and the National Football League will premiere “The Simpsons Funday Football,” an animated “Monday Night Football” game transformed in real-time into the “Simpsons” world using Sony’s Beyond Sports Technology. Atoms Stadium in Springfield will host the December 9 contest between the Cincinnati Bengals at the Dallas Cowboys, ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” game that evening. “The Simpsons Funday Football” will stream on Disney+ and ESPN+, and, on mobile, with NFL+. The traditional “Monday Night Football” telecast will be available on ESPN, ABC and ESPN Deportes with “Monday Night Football with Peyton and Eli” on ESPN2. Both the traditional telecast and Peyton and Eli will also be on ESPN+. All telecasts will begin at 8p.

While the New York Yankees try to avoid a sweep in Game 4 of the World Series tonight (October 28), Blue Triton Brands has launched an out-of-home ad campaign in New York City, naming its Poland Spring “The Official Water of Rally Caps,” while in a similar campaign its Arrowhead brand will be touted as “the Official Water of the National Anthem” in Los Angeles. Poland Spring, the official water of the New York Yankees, will place OOH billboards/digital screens in major high traffic areas throughout New York including Times Square, Penn Plaza and throughout the subway system. In Los Angeles, the Arrowhead billboards will be seen in The Tower, Kurve, Vermont Spectacular and 3rd Street Crossing.

Nearly 6 million viewers watched Ohio State narrowly beat Nebraska on Fox’s “Big Noon Saturday” college football broadcast. The game peaked at 9.456 million viewers between 3:15p and 3:30p on Fox, making it the most watched college football game on any network that weekend. Viewership was up 66% year-over-year over “Big Noon Saturday’s” week 9 matchup in 2023 (vs. 3.6 million). Fox’s airing of the Rutgers – USC game scored more than 2 million viewers, up 69% over average late-night telecasts on the network this season (vs. 1.189 million).

Viant Technology said it will integrate Comscore audience data to train its ViantAI autonomous media buying platform allowing ViantAI to leverage site ranking and audience reach data in the creation of media plans.

IAB Tech Lab has released its Global Privacy Platform (GPP) Implementation Guidelines for a 45-day public comment period, ending on December 16. “Our goal is to provide clear, actionable steps for companies to integrate the GPP into their operations,” said Rowena Lam, Senior Director of Product, IAB Tech Lab. “The guidelines are designed to support teams new to the GPP while enhancing the process for those already familiar with the platform.” The GPP was developed to help ecosystem participants support user choice and comply with consumer privacy regulations across diverse regulatory regimes globally. These implementation guidelines, developed by the Global Privacy Working Group, provide essential resources for product and engineering teams to adopt the GPP and comply with evolving regulations like GDPR and U.S. state laws. The guidelines align with IAB Tech Lab’s broader mission of supporting the industry by providing tools that streamline compliance efforts and facilitate more effective privacy management within the digital advertising ecosystem.

With Halloween literally around the corner, DAIVID, which helps advertisers measure and improve the effectiveness of their content, used its new AI-powered platform to find the spookiest ads ever. UK independent producer Fudge Park has reached a first look and development deal with distributor Freemantle, that will see the latter become the primary home for all of Fudge Park’s upcoming scripted projects. Fudge Park will work closely with Fremantle’s Global Drama and International Distribution divisions to help develop its drama and comedy slate, growing its global footprint and forging pathways into new territories. The two had previously collaborated on “Daddy Issues” for the BBC which debuted on BBC Three and iPlayer in August and has been picked up for a second season.

Happy Prince, part of ITV Studios, has optioned the rights to Wideacre, the international bestselling novel from Philippa Gregory. The book will be adapted by Dominic Treadwell-Collins and produced by his Happy Prince label, the company behind Jilly Cooper’s “Rivals,” which launched on Disney+ earlier this month.

Several CBS series have posted double-digit multiplatform audiences and season-over-season streaming growth for the premieres of their freshman and sophomore seasons, based on VideoAmp and internal data, led by “Matlock,” whose series premiere has been seen by 15.8 million multiplatform viewers in its first 30 days. The season premiere of “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage” amassed 10.6 million multiplatform viewers, while the season two premiere of “Tracker” delivered 15.7 million multiplatform viewers in its first seven days, up +25% from its time period premiere last season on Feb. 18. “Elsbeth’s” season two premiere was seen by nearly 10 million multiplatform viewers in its first seven days, up +19% from its debut last season on Feb. 29.

FOX News Channel recorded its second highest-rated October of an election year in network history. According to Nielsen, FNC remained the top network in all of cable news among upscale, Hispanic and Asian viewers during total day in viewership and 25-54 demo.
