The NCTA, the industry group representing cable and media companies and internet providers, along with the IAB and the Electronic Security Association, are suing to block the FTC’s “click to cancel” rule, which makes it easier to cancel subscriptions and memberships. In a complaint filed in the 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals, the groups allege the new rule could cover as many as 1 billion paid subscriptions in the United States and is “arbitrary, capricious, and an abuse of discretion.” The rule, passed on October 16, says it must be “at least as easy” to cancel services as it is to sign up.
Greater transparency into methods and modeling corrections are needed to protect against age-based bias in active meter audience measurement panels versus passive meter panels. That’s according to “Understanding the Issue of Age-Based Bias in Active Audience Measurement Panels,” a study from CIMM and TVision. Panelists participating in the simulation were provided with a tablet and instructed to actively report viewing, while their viewing was also being passively monitored. The simulation identified a range of potential errors that could emerge in active panels, including:
– When the television was on during the study, the simulation found that passive and active metering approaches agreed on viewer counts only around 56% of the time.
– Up to 44% of TV on-time in the simulation was over- or under-reported by viewers.
– 18–34-year-old viewers were as much as much as 7X more likely to under-report viewing than over-report when measured through an active meter panel.
– Viewer fatigue was seen over time on active panels, with underreporting going from 23% in Week 0 to 36% in Week 4 and over-reporting going from 19% to 12% over the same time period. Error rates were much higher for older demographics, though over and under reporting by the group generally offset each other.
“The study helps to illustrate some of the issues that can arise, as vendors look to correct for non-compliance,” said Jon Watts, Managing Director, CIMM. “The impact and effectiveness of these corrections over time may be difficult to determine, unless some kind of secondary measurement check is introduced on an ongoing basis to determine whether the corrections made are accurate.”
From October 1-23, the “Harris For President” campaign spent an estimated $21.4 million on national TV ads, with about 1,570 airings and 2.3 billion impressions, according to EDO Ad EnGage estimates. The campaign for Donald Trump spent an estimated $5.2 million, with 148 airings and 32.2 million impressions.
Bring on the “nomance.” The new “Teens and Screens” report from UCLA’s Center for Scholars & Storytellers found that 64% of teens are looking for TV and film content focusing on friendship, with less emphasis on outdated romantic tropes, up from 55% in 2023. About half of pre-teens and 34.5% of teens prefer fantasy worlds over other genres (such as stories about real-life issues, relatable themes or rich/famous people). That’s versus 19.5% and 25.3%, respectively, in the demos last year. “This generation cares deeply about many social issues, but they also need a break mentally,” said Yalda T. Uhls, founder and executive director of the center, co-author of the study and adjunct professor in UCLA’s psychology department. “It makes sense that we see many of them looking to the media for fantasy and stories with messages of hope, to get relief from the many challenges that come with the reality of being a young person today.” |
Prime Video had renewed “Good Omens” for a third season, but in the wake of multiple sexual assault allegations against series creator Neil Gaiman, the series will end with one 90-minute episode instead. Gaiman’s production company Blank Corporation is no longer involved with the show, which will begin shooting its last hurrah in 2025 in Scotland.
TCLtv+ and Revry, the LGBTQ+ streaming network, have announced a joint content partnership that will bring the Revry FAST channel to the TCLtv+ streaming service beginning this month. “TCL represents a significant expansion for Revry, and we’re excited to engage and entertain audiences across North America,” said Daniel Schnider, Head of Business Development and Distribution at Revry. “This partnership enables us to further extend our reach and showcase the diversity of queer voices, offering even more viewers access to our unique and inclusive programming.”
For election night, Peacock plans to employ the multiview experience it used to great effect for the Paris Olympics. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy’s announcement last month that all employees must return to working in the office five days a week in January drew backlash. Mark Ma, associate professor of business administration for Pitt Business, whose research on RTO mandates has been featured in Forbes, the Washington Post, the Financial Times and more, weighs in for Cynopsis.
Your research on return-to-office mandates has attracted a lot of attention. What were your key findings?
We find that return to office mandates significantly hurt employee job satisfaction. Also, we do not find evidence that such mandates improve firm performance or valuation. Further, we find that RTO mandates are driven by managers who want to seek power and poor stock performance. So, our findings are not consistent with many managers’ arguments that these mandate helps improve firm performance.
Why do you think some employers are being so rigid about back to work policies?
There are different motives behind different firms’ RTO decisions. In some firms, their managers desperately need to give a response to poor stock market performance. They tend to blame remote workers for the poor performance. When Amazon had its first return to office mandate for three days a week, the firm’s stock price declined significantly prior to the RTO decision. Clearly, the CEO faced very big pressure from the stock market at that time. In fact, a few months before this first RTO decision, Andy Jassy publicly suggested that he had no plan to bring employees back. Then, suddenly he changed his mind. At some other firms, it is an issue of top management’s mindsets. Many managers lack trust in their employees. Therefore, they want to bring employees back to the office and thus could better monitor their employees. In the specific case of Amazon’s recent 5-day RTO, it is a new phenomenon since late 2023. Some firms are using RTOs as a way to lay off employees. But, this strategy could hurt the firm in the long-term by causing significant brain drain at the firm.
How else might this approach backfire?
Strict RTO mandates could backfire in several ways. First, it hurts employee morale and their productivity. Second, managers would be distracted by negative publicity caused the RTO. Third, RTO will lead to brain drain. In another project, we examine how RTO mandates affect employee retention and hiring. We find that employee turnover significantly increases after RTO mandates. This effect is more pronounced for female workers, senior employees (middle level managers), and employees with more skills. We also find a significant decrease in employee hiring rate. Also, it takes much longer for employers to fill their job opening after RTO mandates. So, the most important implication for firms is that employees who leave after RTO are the better employees who the firm does not want to lose.
Do you believe eventually most offices will return to pre-pandemic office policies?
No, five-day RTOs are still very rare and will not become the norm. The equilibrium will be some form of hybrid policy. Some firms may mandate two or three days per week in office. Some other firms would allow employee and team choice to determine how many days they need to meet in person. Then, employees can choose where they want to work on the other days. I believe the employee and team choice approach is the best approach. |

Nickelodeon Studios has greenlit “My Weird School,” a feature-length movie based on the book series by Dan Gutman. Production begins in Vancouver, Canada this month, and will stream day-and-date on Paramount+ and air on Nickelodeon channels around the world. Premiere details will be announced at a later date.
