Former Paramount studio chief Barry Diller said it was his interest in the media giant that “unquestionably” pushed Skydance Media to buy Paramount Global, at the FT Business of Entertainment Summit. Skydance had originally proposed buying out Paramount Global chair Shari Redstone’s interest in National Amusements – which also controls Paramount – in a deal valued at $8 billion. At the FT conference, Diller joked that Redstone “ought to send a nice pot of flowers or chicken soup” as a token of appreciation, according to Deadline.com. Diller, who ran Paramount before it was purchased by Redstone’s father Sumner Redstone, had several discussions with the company when it was most recently put back on the trading block, and he said those talks “got Skydance to close the first round of it,” adding that after word leaked of his interest any contentious issues held by Skydance in their negotiations disappeared. Skydance, led by Oracle founder Larry Ellison’s son David, had one more hurdle to clear – a competing offer from a group led by former Warner Music chief Edgar Bronfman, Jr., that was abandoned in August – before sealing the deal, which is expected to close in the first half of 2025.
With the presidential election less than two months away, Sinclair said it is increasing its advertising guidance for the third quarter to between $140 million and $145 million, above its earlier forecast of $113 million to $128 million. Sinclair attributed the bump to stronger than expected political ad sales. The company, which owns 185 TV stations in 86 markets across the country, said it expected its Local Media segment to generate core ad revenue of between $285 million and $293 million in Q3, down slightly from the previous prediction of $288 million to $300 million due to crowd-out from the increased political advertising. In total, Sinclair now expects Q3 Local Media advertising revenue to be between $425 million to $438 million, up from earlier predictions of $401 million to $428 million. Full-year political revenue is now expected to land between $442 million to $469 million, up from the previously disclosed range of $385 million to $410 million.
Erik Menendez, who along with his brother Lyle was convicted of murdering their parents in 1989 in one of the most sensational trials in recent history, has publicly come out against Netflix’s limited series about the case – “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” – as “inaccurate” and “dishonest,” according to reports. Erik posted a message to his brother’s Facebook page last Friday, criticizing the Netflix limited series, produced by Ryan Murphy, as yet another melodramatic adaptation of the murders that doesn’t follow the facts. The Netflix show depicts the brothers as spoiled brats who went on a spending spree after killing their parents, and later as sympathetic victims who endured years of sexual abuse by their father and mother. The brothers were convicted of first-degree murder in 1996 and are currently serving life sentences without the possibility of parole, but their lawyer has said publicly he’s hopeful that new family testimonies would help get their sentences reduced. |

Dallas Jenkins, creator of Biblical series “The Chosen,” launched 5&2 Studios with a slate of projects in the works including an animated series, an unscripted show with reality star Bear Grylls and a multi-season series on the story of Moses. According to Variety, Jenkins was scheduled to announce the new studio and its plans – including the rollout of the last two seasons of “The Chosen” – at the “ChosenCon” two-day gathering of fans in Orlando, FL, that began on Friday. Variety added that a six-episode adventure series – “The Chosen in the Wild with Bear Grylls” – is in the works and will begin shooting this fall. After The Chosen ends its run, Jenkins plans to write, direct and showrun a three-season series on the life of Moses, Variety added.
Writer Nell Scovell (“Sabrina the Teenage Witch”) and former NBCUniversal Television content chief Susan Rovner are developing a series, “The Fishbowl,” with CBS Studios producing, according to Deadline.com The drama centers on a brilliant medical examiner overseeing a private room at the Manhattan morgue that investigates New York City’s weirdest deaths. Scovell created the series and will executive produce with Rovner through Aha Studios banner.

New episodes of animated series “Alma’s Way” from Fred Rogers Productions premiere September 23 as Sonia Monzano returns as Granny Isa and Alma tries to get her grandparents to remarry so her whole family can be together all the time. In addition, Alma and her family and friends get to visit the American Museum of Natural History in two episodes that highlight the iconic Museum and some of its most popular exhibits, beginning on October 5.
Just in time to kick off the Halloween season, the all-new series “Destinations of the Damned with Zak Bagans – featuring the “Ghost Adventures” star – premieres Wednesday, October 2 at 11p on Discovery Channel and will stream on discovery+ with a same-day binge-drop.

Telemundo 51 Miami / WSCV, part of NBCUniversal Local’s Telemundo Station Group, presented its annual telethon benefitting the Liga Contra el Cáncer (League Against Cancer) across its TV, streaming and digital platforms on Saturday. The telethon was hosted live by Daisy Ballmajó, Alejandra Molina, Fausto Malavé, Marilys Llanos, Mariana Rodríguez, and Alejandro Isturiz, with additional participation from Gloria Ordaz, Arlena Amaro, Ana Cuervo and Eduardo “Yusnaby” Rodriguez. This year, donations topped $3.1 million.
“Live from Mount Olympus,” the award-winning podcast for kids and families from the Onassis Foundation, PRX, and the TEAM returns for Season 5 with a retelling of the myth of Pandora, while the three-episode new season of “GodsPod,” launches October 15 with a new episode premiering each Tuesday through October 29. Tony-, Emmy-, and Grammy-Award winner André De Shields (“Cats: The Jellicle Ball,” “Hadestown”) returns as podcast host Hermes to share the story of Pandora, played by Nedra Marie Taylor (“Book of Mormon,” “Marvin’s Room”). “Live from Mount Olympus” has been downloaded more than 1.5 million times and is available free on-demand on all major podcast platforms.
AXS TV revealed its October concert lineup, with a roster including Bruce Springsteen, The Doobie Brothers, Aerosmith, Def Leppard, Queen, Maroon Five, Imagine Dragons, Shania Twain, and more, airing every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday in primetime, and continuing with themed blocks every Saturday and Sunday. Lady A kicks off the month with “Lady A: Live From The Artists Den” on October 1 at 9p. Later in the month, British rocker Judas Priest take the stage in “Judas Priest: Battle Cry Live at Wacken Festival 2015” on October 6 at 2p, followed by “Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band: Darkness on the Edge of Town at the Paramount Theatre, Asbury Park” on October 7 at 9p, “Fleetwood Mac-Live In Boston” is slated for October 12, while “Nirvana: Live At The Paramount” is scheduled for October 26 at 3p.

The reboot of Max series “Pretty Little Liars” will not return for a third season, the streamer said. The series debuted on Max in 2022 as “Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin.” A second season – “Pretty Little Liars: Summer School” – aired between May and June. In a statement, Max said it “will not be moving forward with a third season “of the show, but thanked its co-creators Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon Bring and the crew at Warner Bros. Television for “reintroducing fans to this new iteration” of the show.

A Federal Communications Commission proposal that would require broadcasters to disclose on-air when a political advertisement uses artificial intelligence is being flagged as unfair by a group of cable and broadcast companies. Because the ruling wouldn’t affect social media companies and streamers, the NCTA (The Internet & Television Association) and the National Association of Broadcasters claim it could confuse consumers. The proposed rule’s aim is to fight back against deep fake political ads but because the FCC’s jurisdiction is limited to companies that use the public airwaves, it wouldn’t apply to social media companies, streaming video operators and other online publishers. Both groups say the rule could force political campaigns to shift their ad dollars online, while other organizations like watchdog group Public Citizen that support the proposal say the stakes of not identifying deep fakes are too high. The American Civil Liberties Union argued that the proposed rules might “unconstitutionally burden the speech of third parties,” and force licensees to abandon political advertising and seek out less costly alternatives.
Google now shows YouTube users ads when they pause videos in the app, providing advertisers with a new space to utilize when planning campaigns. Google began testing the pause feature in 2023 with select advertisers for viewers pausing videos on a connected TV. The test ads appeared as a banner around the video and were removable by selecting a “dismiss” button. Pause ads are now showing up on YouTube’s website as well as its mobile app, to the chagrin of some users. YouTube claims the feature, now available to all advertisers, is designed to be less interruptive. However, it’s uncertain whether that means there will be fewer ads as a result.
Incompas, a tech group that counts Amazon, Netflix, Google and Meta as members, urged a federal appeals court last week to uphold the Federal Communications Commission’s Net Neutrality rules. Net neutrality would formally prohibit broadband providers from blocking or throttling traffic and charging higher fees for prioritized delivery, actions that opponents to the regulations say are already kept in check by the marketplace. The FCC had planned to enact Net Neutrality in July but was blocked by the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, which is expected to make a decision shortly. In a friend-of-the-court brief last week, Incompas argued the order helps protect consumers’ ability to access content from edge providers like streamers, search engines, social platforms and other web publishers and that without formal rules, cable and telecom companies that provide broadband connections could undermine competition.

In Weeks 3 and 4, ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” will present two games with staggered kick off times and overlapping action on the same night (Monday, Sept. 23 and Sept. 30), giving fans four hours of uninterrupted NFL game action. In Week 3 the Jacksonville Jaguars take on the Buffalo Bills at 7:30p on ESPN and the Washington Commanders take on the Cincinnati Bengals at 8:15p on ABC. Week 4 will see the Tennessee Titans take on the Miami Dolphins on ESPN at 7:30p, while the Seattle Seahawks will meet the Detroit Lions on ABC at 8:15p.
ESPN+ and ESPN Deportes featured top La Liga and Bundelsliga matchups this weekend, as Real Madrid hosted RCD Espanyol September 21.FC Barcelona traveled to Estadio de la Cerámica to face Villarreal September 22, while real Betis vs. Mallorca is slated for today, September 23. Bundesliga matchups included Bayer Leverkusen vs. Wolfsburg (September 22), last season’s runner-up VfB Stuttgart vs. Borussia Dortmund (September 22) and Bremen vs. FC Bayern München (September 21). NWSL action included Gotham FC-Utah Royals on September 22, while Eredivisie featured PSV Eindhoven– the only team with an unblemished record in the five matches played this season – vs. Fortuna on September 22.
Gen.G Esports (Gen.G) has partnered with global sports brand Descente to showcase a new uniform for the 2024 League of Legends World Championships. The Worlds 2024 uniform consists of two pieces, a jersey and a jacket. The “Worlds White” uniform was created at the request of the team to express their intent to win Worlds, accentuated by the golden lines of the Gen.G logo throughout the body of the uniform. The brand name in the center of the jersey features a scratch by a tiger, which is Gen.G’s mascot, representing the fight needed to achieve victory. The uniform will be unveiled on September 25 through Gen.G’s official social media channels, with pre-sales for Gen.G Crew members will also begin on that date.
Sports streamer Psyched4 said it launched its beta platform on September 5 in the UK, with broadcast rights for Jai Alai, Downhill Skateboarding, K-League, PTO and ICC Pathway. The company says it will donate a percentage of proceeds from its streaming platform to UK Sport, which helps to fund governing bodies and its athletes so that they can train and compete domestically and abroad. Subscriptions start at £9.99 per month, and a free ad-supported service is also available.
Next Level Sports & Entertainment (NLSE) is bringing back Spain’s elite Liga Endesa basketball league to its lineup for the 2024-2025 season. NLSE’s expanded coverage will include a lineup of regular season games, the entire postseason, and special events like the Supercopa Endesa and Copa del Rey. European independent animation studio and IP developer Millimages has launched “The Kindness Club” on its Molang YouTuber Channel. Consisting of 10 episodes, The Kindness Club” is a monthly 8-10 minute animated short where the characters model and discuss matters of mental health and kindness with celebrity parodies from the world of animation.

The Summer Olympics, averaging 14 million nightly viewers from July 26-August 11, helped NBC become the ratings champ for the 2023-24 season, measured from Sept. 25, 2023-Sept. 22, 2024. That, coupled with other summer programming, helped NBC pass CBS, which won the traditional September to May ratings season. NBC averaged about 4.9 million primetime viewers during the summer months of 2023-24, beating CBS’ 4.7 million. ABC ranked third with 3.9 million viewers, while Fox averaged 2.8 million. NBC viewership was up 7% from 2022-23 season, while ABC rose by 4%, CBS dipped 6% and Fox was down 24% for the period. CBS averaged 5.59 million viewers for the September to May season, followed by NBC (5.01 million), ABC (4.29 million) and Fox (3.35 million). TV viewing tends to go down substantially in the summer, even in an Olympic year, hence the lower numbers for the full year vs. the nine-month traditional season.
Among the key ad-sales demographic of adults 18-49, NBC led the 52-week season with a 0.72 rating, equal to about 950,000 viewers in that age range. ABC and CBS tied at 0.6 (about 790,000 viewers), and Fox drew a 0.58 (about 765,000 viewers). For the September-to-May run, CBS scored a 0.82 rating, followed by NBC at 0.77, Fox at 0.73 and ABC at 0.66.
