Will DirecTV’s blackout of Disney channels end in time for Monday Night Football and the NFL next week? “This is not just a run-of-the-mill dispute for us,” said CFO Ray Carpenter during a call with analysts. “We didn’t go into this thinking, ‘Hey, let’s see how much of this we can leverage before Monday Night Football rolls around and then make a deal.’ We’re prepared to take this as long as it needs to.” Disney channels went dark on DirecTV over the weekend, when the companies couldn’t come to terms on a new carriage agreement. DirecTV is offering customers a $20 credit for the blackout. Separately, DirecTV is holding a Million Dollar Blitz Sweepstakes, giving away 18,000 prizes that range in value from $50 to $500. The promotion ends December 31.

Writer/producer David E. Kelley (“Ally McBeal,” “L.A. Law,” “Big Little Lies”) will receive the 2024 International Emmy® Founders Award at the 52nd International Emmy® Awards Gala on Monday, November 25. “Every generation has a favorite David E. Kelley show and that’s because David Kelley has been turning out television hits since ‘L.A. Law’ forty years ago,” said International Academy President & CEO, Bruce L. Paisner. “He crafts memorable television for viewers across the globe.”

YouTube moved into the lead among media distributors in Nielsen’s July 2024 Media Distributor Gauge report, a view of total TV consumption by media company. Time spent watching YouTube on television was up 7% compared to June, leading the streaming platform to account for 10.4% of total TV for the month, up from 9.9%. Nielsen attributes the jump largely to school-aged viewers, who accounted for nearly 30% of YouTube viewership. Disney was second with 9.9% of total TV, followed by NBCUniversal (9.5%), Netflix (8.4%), and Fox and Paramount (7.4% each).

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

“Patrice: The Movie,” a feature-length documentary from director Ted Passon (“Philly D.A.”) and producers Kyla Harris (“We Might Regret This”), Innbo Shim (“Amend”) and Emily Spivack (“Worn Stories”) will premiere Monday, September 30 on Hulu. The documentary romantic comedy follows a disabled couple who decide to plan a commitment ceremony that could risk their future.

AMC Networks announced the initial Spanish cast for season three of “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon,” currently filming in Spain. Onboard are Eduardo Noriega (“The Devil’s Backbone”), Óscar Jaenada (“Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”) and Alexandra Masangkay (“The Platform“) as series regulars, in addition to Candela Saitta (“Último primer día”) and Hugo Arbués (“Through My Window”) in recurring roles.

Charise Castro Smith (“Encanto”) inked an overall deal with 20th Television to develop, write and executive produce original series. Already in development, for Hulu, is a series adaptation of the Lisa Unger bestseller Confessions on the 7:45, with Jessica Alba attached to star.

MeTV has renewed “Collector’s Call” for a fifth season. Season six of the series, hosted by Lisa Welchel (“Facts of Life”), arrives in 2025.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Season five of “The Drew Barrymore Show” debuts Monday, September 9, with Valerie Bertinelli onboard as a lifestyle expert for the syndicated talker. The “One Day at a Time” alum has the chops – she hosted Food Network’s “Valerie’s Home Cooking” from 2015-23, and “Kids Baking Championship” from 2015-24.

Drama “Sed de Venganza” premieres next month on Telemundo. The Miami-set series follows a woman whose attempt to escape the abuse she’s experienced since childhood go awry.

“Monday Night Football with Peyton and Eli” launches its fourth season when the New York Jets take on the San Francisco 49ers on September 9 at 8p, on ESPN2 and ESPN+.

Reality show “Dr. Pimple Popper: Breaking Out,” starring dermatologist Dr. Sandra Lee (TLC’s “Dr. Pimple Popper”), is coming to Lifetime in 2025. Invent TV is producing in association with AE Factual Studios and Not Hurting You Productions with Sergio Alfaro, Scott Cooper, Sandra Lee and Jeffrey Rebish serving as executive producers. Brie Miranda Bryant and Nicole Vogel will serve as executive producers for Lifetime.

Ezra Sosa has been promoted from troupe member to pro for season 33 of ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars.” Sosa joined “DWTS” in 2021.

Outdoor Channel and Sportsman Channel are available for free preview across multiple providers. Throughout September, television operators such as Dish, Sling, Cox, and DirecTV/Stream will participate the preview event.

BBC News is flying high. BBC Studios struck a deal with Delta Airlines to bring the news channel to Delta’s domestic flights for the first time.

Pluto TV launched three new channels this week: Cheers + Frasier, Queens of Reality, and WOW – Women of Wrestling.

TECH

Megan Thee Stallion will perform at as well as host the 2024 VMAs, airing Wednesday, September 11 at 8p across MTV’s linear and digital platforms and Univision.

Kartoon Studios and LiveOne are partnering make three channels available to LiveOne members, including the Tesla streaming app. Channels include Baby Genius, Stan Lee Presents, and Cartoon Hangover.

Canada’s Serial Maven Studios has launched a distribution division with a catalogue of over 300 hours of premium factual content. The company’s debut slate features content in the science, nature, engineering, lifestyle, documentary and kids & family genres with series and single documentaries from platforms including Netflix, Smithsonian, BBC One, HGTV, E! Entertainment, PBS, CBC, Arte, NHK and Discovery.

COMING UP

“Colin Jost & Michael Che Present: New York After Dark” premieres on Peacock on Thursday, September 12 at 6p. Taped in Brooklyn, the live, one-hour special hosted by the “Saturday Night Live” Weekend Update team will feature new as well as familiar comedians, and house band 1500 or Nothin’.

The “Star Trek” franchise announced “Take the Chair, Make an Impact,” a campaign in celebration of Star Trek Day on September 8. The goal of the social activation is to encourage fans to embrace the optimistic vision of a brighter future and to give back to the inclusive community of fans that “Star Trek” has fostered over the years. The premiere episodes of select series and Short Treks will be available to watch for free in a sampling occurring September 7-13 on Paramount+ partner platforms (Amazon, Apple, Roku), Paramount+’s Official YouTube page, Pluto TV and on the Paramount+ free content hub (US only).

“The M Factor: Shredding the Silence on Menopause” premieres Thursday, October 17 on PBS (check local listings). Produced by Women in the Room Productions and Take Flight Productions, “The M Factor” aims to educate and empower women to seek proper healthcare support.

All3Media International announced a new round of adaptations for IDTV’s global format “The Traitors.” Primedia Studios has acquired the rights to create a local version of the show for African audiences, and a Romanian version has been commissioned by Pro TV.

London-based Media I.M. Incorporated has acquired “Tatty and Misifu,” a pre-school animated series. Media I.M. will represent all five seasons of the show produced since 2020 by the Barcelona based ToyTownKids to international linear and digital platforms, excluding YouTube, which is managed directly by the producer.
