   IN THE NEWS

Dentsu is exploring options that range from the sale of a minority stake in the business to the sale of its overseas operations, reports the Financial Times. The possibility doesn’t come as a complete surprise – during a call with analysts last month, President and CEO Hiroshi Igarsashi said, “We are going to rebuild our business foundation. We are going to also re-evaluate our underperforming business, and we are making steady progress on this.”

Four “Saturday Night Live” cast members who will not be onboard for season 51 include Heidi Gardner, who joined the show in 2017 as a featured player and was bumped up to the main cast in 2019; Michael Longfellow and Devon Walker after three seasons (“Sometimes mom and dad just don’t see things eye to eye,” posted Walker on Instagram); and Emil Wakim, who joined as a featured player last season. The new season is set to launch October 4.

Cox Communications has asked the Supreme Court to reverse a lower court’s ruling that Cox could be partially liable for its customers’ illegal music downloads. But holding Cox accountable wouldn’t just penalize the company, argues Cox. “Under the Fourth Circuit’s theory, Cox could avoid liability only by throwing entire homes, coffee shops, hotels, military barracks, and regional ISPs off of the internet,” wrote the broadband provider in a brief to the high court. “Innocent users and infringers alike would be severed from service that is integral to nearly every aspect of modern life.”

Heads up, Little Monsters: Lady Gaga has been added to the lineup of performers at the MTV VMAs, airing Sunday, September 7 at 8p on CBS and Paramount+. There’s a good chance she’ll be collecting trophies, too – the singer received a show-topping 12 nominations.

Animated comedy “The Chosen Adventures” landed a series order from Prime Video. The series, following two children who meet up with Jesus of Nazareth, was written by Ryan Swanson (“The Chosen”) and comes from Amazon MGM Studios and 5&2 Studios.

Media moguls John Malone Rupert Murdoch talked merger last summer, Malone told the Financial Times. Warner Bros. Discovery advisor Malone said he had “serious discussions” with Murdoch about merging Fox Corporation with WBD, a move that “probably would have happened if we thought that Fox News and CNN could live under one umbrella.” Warner CEO David Zaslav and News Corp chair Lachlan Murdoch were reportedly involved in the talks.

The Trump administration continued its dismantling of Voice of America, begun in March, with the layoffs of 532 VOA journalists. Only about 100 staffers remain. “This action will allow us to focus resources where they are most needed – bringing truth to people living under communist regimes and dictatorships,” posted Kari Lake, acting chief executive of the US Agency for Global Media, on X. Paula Hickey, president of the union that represents VOA employees, called the layoffs illegal and told The New York Times, “The manner in which they are being executed reveals the contempt this administration has for federal employees and the rule of law.” Friday’s layoffs came a day after a federal judge blocked President Trump and Lake from removing the director of Voice of America, Michael Abramowitz.
