Media companies saw 8% more overall dollar volume in upfront TV advertising spending year over year, to $29.5 billion for the 2024-25 TV season, according to Media Dynamics estimates. While linear TV deals dipped 4% to $18.4 billion, streaming upfront revenue rose 35%, to $11.1 billion for premium platforms. Cost-per-thousand viewers fell 9.8%, to an average $31.70 for viewers 18+.

Dentsu announced a strategic partnership with Sports Innovation Lab, providing clients with the ability to develop sports-related insights and target addressable sports audiences to Merkury’s 268 million reachable US adults. “Merkury’s more than 10,000 consumer data attributes combined with the data-driven fan intelligence from Sports Innovation Lab, generate the most advanced and precise sports audiences in the industry,” said Gerry Bavaro, Chief Strategy Officer, Merkury at dentsu. “Through the partnership, our clients can confidently develop custom audiences, enabling personalized, real-time experiences for sports enthusiasts across channels while adhering to the highest standards of consumer data protection.”

With just hours to spare, Paramount Global extended the go-shop period for its sale, which was to end at midnight on Wednesday. The company now has15 days to explore a last-minute offer from a group led by Edgar Bronfman. “There can be no assurance this process will result in a Superior Proposal,” said the special committee of Paramount’s board that is overseeing the sale. “The Company does not intend to disclose further developments unless and until it determines such disclosure is appropriate or is otherwise required.” Bronfman’s $4.3 billion bid, made on Monday, was later enhanced with $1.7 billion to cash out some shareholders. Skydance Media had struck a deal with Paramount in July that included the go-shop provision.

As expected, Disney, Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery have appealed the August 16 ruling by US District Judge Margaret Garnett that granted a preliminary injunction against their joint offering, streaming service Venu Sports, slated to launch this fall. Fubo filed an antitrust lawsuit in February, and the judge ruled Fubo is “likely to succeed in demonstrating that the JV will substantially lessen competition or tend to create a monopoly in contravention of this country’s antitrust laws.”

Toyota Motor Corporation will return as the presenting sponsor of NBCUniversal’s coverage of the Paralympic Games Paris 2024. “Toyota’s dedication to supporting these incredible moments both enhances the viewer experience and strengthens the bond between our audience and these inspiring athletes,” said Dan Lovinger, President, Olympic & Paralympic Partnerships, NBCUniversal. NBCU also reported a record number of advertisers generating a +60% increase in sales compared to the Tokyo Paralympic Games.

The CW is about to have five new affiliates. Nexstar Media Group announced that its WJBF-D3 Augusta, Ga. (DMA 110); KARD-D2 Monroe, La. (142); KFDX-D3 Wichita Falls, Texas (149); WTWO-D2 Terre Haute, Ind. (159); and WFXV-D2 Utica, N.Y. (171) will begin carrying the network’s lineup beginning in September and October.

Netflix ordered animated comedy “Long Story Short” from Raphael Bob-Waksberg (“BoJack Horseman”). From The Tornante Company and ShadowMachine, the series focuses on a family’s “shared history, inside jokes and shared wounds.”

Hulu is developing “The Envoy,” a hostage recovery series from Alexi Hawley (“The Rookie”). Lionsgate Television is producing, with ABC Signature.

Showdog Studios announced three series additions to its production and development slate: scripted dramas “Plan B” and “Sweet Toxins” and nonfiction series “Spec Ops Boss.” Showdog Studio founder John Attard and company executive Robert Harris serve as executive producers for all projects.

“The Drew Barrymore Show” has been renewed for season six on CBS Stations, and earned time period upgrades in seven of the top 20 markets ahead of the season five premiere on Monday, September 9. “Drew is a one-of-a-kind talent who is an integral part of the CBS and Paramount family,” said Wendy McMahon, President and CEO of CBS News and Stations and CBS Media Ventures. “This early renewal and upgrades are a testament to our commitment to ‘The Drew Barrymore Show’ and its loyal audience, who tune in every day to see Drew’s warmth, inquisitiveness and spontaneity.”

Apple TV+ picked up a second season of “Criminal Record,” starring and executive produced by Peter Capaldi (“Doctor Who”) and Cush Jumbo (“The Good Wife”).

Casting notes: Matthew Rhys (“The Americans”) is onboard Netflix mystery thriller “The Beast in Me,” with Clare Danes (“Homeland”)….P.J. Byrne (“The Big Cigar”) has joined the cast of USA Network’s “The Rainmaker” as a series regular.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Bronze Medal Olympian Stephen Nedoroscik, who went viral for meditating while he waited to compete on the pommel horse, will take a spin on season 33 of ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars.” The series returns Tuesday, September 17 at 8p.

Season two of Netflix docuseries “Sprint,” following athletes from Olympic trials through the Paris Games, premieres Wednesday, November 13.

MTV reality show “Jersey Shore Family Vacation” returns for the second half of season seven on Thursday, September 18 at 8p, with the squad traveling to Las Vegas, NYC, and Miami.

FX’s “Say Nothing” will premiere Thursday, November 14 on Hulu with all 9 episodes available. The new limited series is based on the book by Patrick Radden Keefe about Irish Republican Army members.

National Geographic three-parter “Killer Lies: Chasing a True Crime Con Man,” following a serial killer expert, debuts Wednesday, August 28 at 8p.

German-language series “Where’s Wanda?” makes its global debut with two episodes Wednesday, October 2 on Apple TV+. The dark comedy follows a couple who take matters into their own hands after police fail to find their missing daughter.

“The Grand Tour: One for the Road,” a special that concludes Prime Video’s “The Grand Tour,” launches Friday, September 13. The road trip show premiered in 2016, reuniting former “Top Gear” stars Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May.

COMING UP

Horror thriller “It’s What’s Inside” will drop Friday, October 4 on Netflix. The film follows a group of friends whose pre-wedding party awakens long-hidden desires and grudges.

Greg Berlanti will receive the Television Academy’s 2024 Governor’s Award, recognizing his impact by depicting the underrepresented in film and in series like “Dawson’s Creek,” “Riverdale,” “All American,” and “You.” “Greg is an extraordinary creator, who consistently delivers characters and stories that are in dialogue with the real world,” said Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego. “From the beginning of his career, his commitment to representing three-dimensional LGBTQ+ characters in particular has paved the way for greater cultural understanding and acceptance of a community that is often under attack in both social and political discourse.”

Miranda Lambert is also set to be honored. The “Tin Man” singer will receive the Country Icon Award at the “People’s Choice Country Music Awards,” airing September 26 at 8p on NBC.

The Parks Channel has launched on Amazon Fire TV and Vizio. “Much as we love them, some national parks are being loved to death,” said Parks Channel Co-Founder and CEO Charles Poe. “But there are so many incredible destinations that many travelers have never heard of. We’re thrilled to bring those stories home to viewers who use Amazon Fire TV or have Vizio connected TVs – and this is still just the beginning of the journey.”

Paramount+ Essential is now available in Spectrum TV Select and Mi Plan Latino packages at no additional cost. As part of a new distribution agreement between Charter Communications and Paramount Global, Spectrum video customers can stream over 40,000 episodes of shows and movies through the Xumo Stream Box or any other Paramount+ supported device.

Omnichannel advertising saw over 25% year-over-year growth, according to Mediacean’s 2024 H2 Market Report, which also noted the doubling of AI adoption in ad targeting and creative optimization, and the increasing emphasis on privacy-first strategies, with 70% of top brands prioritizing these approaches. Asked about the most important consumer trends, CTV topped the list among marketing industry professionals, surpassing AI:

Google has agreed to contribute to a California fund for programs to research AI and improve local journalism in exchange for serving up content in the News section of its Search platform. “This agreement represents a major breakthrough in ensuring the survival of newsrooms and bolstering local journalism across California — leveraging substantial tech industry resources without imposing new taxes on Californians,” said Governor Gavin Newsom. “The deal not only provides funding to support hundreds of new journalists but helps rebuild a robust and dynamic California press corps for years to come, reinforcing the vital role of journalism in our democracy.”

Yahoo DSP struck strategic partnerships with Planet Fitness and Rippl, Powered by Bridg. Each partnership expands commerce media capabilities through the Yahoo DSP, enabling advertisers to reach in-demand addressable audiences with greater precision and performance across the open internet. “We’re thrilled to unlock these diverse, in-demand audience segments for our advertisers through the Yahoo DSP, providing the necessary data, technology, and inventory to achieve outstanding performance goals,” said Mike Brunick, SVP and Head of Commerce Media at Yahoo.

Mornings will look different on Fox Sports 1 following the departure of talk host Skip Bayless. Starting in the fall, new shows “Breakfast Ball” and “The Facility” will kick off the day. “FS1 is evolving around a dynamic roster of sports talk personalities,” said Charlie Dixon, the network’s EVP and Head of Content. “From early morning to late afternoon, viewers can look forward to an array of compelling sports discussions, expert analysis and exclusive interviews, all designed to keep sports enthusiasts informed and entertained throughout the day.”

TNT Sports will present live coverage of the Acrisure Series, showcasing 21 of the country’s leading NCAA college basketball men’s and women’s teams.
