Talk show legend Phil Donahue died August 18 after a long illness. He was 88. “The Phil Donahue Show” premiered in 1967 on WLWD-TV in Dayton, Ohio, and had a 29-year run in syndication (with a name change to “Donahue” in 1974). Donahue was the first talk show host to invite the audience to question his guests, roaming the aisle with his microphone, covering subjects that ran the gamut from politics to abortion to go-go dancers. Donahue collected 20 Daytime Emmy Awards, and his show at its peak averaged eight million viewers. Posted Oprah Winfrey on Instagram, “There wouldn’t have been an Oprah Show without Phil Donahue being the first to prove that daytime talk and women watching should be taken seriously. He was a pioneer.”

Almin Karamehmedovic has been named President, ABC News. “He is a widely respected, seasoned journalist of the highest order who has worked his way up to senior executive producer of ‘World News Tonight with David Muir,’ earning the trust of colleagues and industry peers along the way,” said Debra OConnell, President, News Group and Networks, Disney Entertainment. Karamehmedovic succeeds Kim Godwin, who exited in May after three years in the role.

Play nice, Peacock told “Love Island USA” fans ahead of last night’s season six reunion. Posted the streamer on social media, “The cast are all part of the ‘Love Island USA’ fam now, and while we love your passion for them, we ask that you always choose to be kind. Let’s lift them up and spread the love.” Days earlier, the show’s casting team at City Media posted a similar request, noting, “Cyberbullying is a real issue that can affect our participants.”

Fox Entertainment Studios is teaming with Israel’s yes TV for “One Day in October,” a four-part scripted anthology series centered on the attack by Hamas on October 7 that launched the Israel-Hamas war. Created by Oded Davidoff and Daniel Finkelman, the drama series, which is filmed on location in Israel, is being produced by Finkelman’s Sparks Go and ZOA Films.

HBO and the BBC are set to co-produce “First Day on Earth,” a ten-episode drama series starring and written by Michaela Coel (“I May Destroy You”). Coel will serve as executive producer alongside Jesse Armstrong, Phil Clarke and Roberto Troni for Various Artists Limited, in association with A24.

Hopping aboard the season two cast of Fox anthology series “The Accused” are Debra Winger (“An Officer and a Gentleman”), Mercedes Ruehl (“The Fisher King”), and Christine Ebersole (“Wolf of Wall Street”). The season kicks off Tuesday, October 8 at 8p, having had its original debut date bumped due to the vice presidential debate on October 1.

Gina Rodriguez will move from co-hosting game show “Lucky 13” on ABC to playing an assistant district attorney on season three of the network’s “Will Trent.” The actress also starred ABC sitcom “Not Dead Yet,” which was canceled in May after two seasons.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Apple TV+’s “Bad Sisters” is back for season two on Wednesday, November 13. The comedic drama from Sharon Horgan will launch with two episodes, and run through December 25.

Season five of “The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” launches Wednesday, September 18 at 9p on. What to expect this go-round? Bravo promises “an avalanche of fractured friendships, earthshattering rumors and high fashion.”

Amber Ruffin (“The Amber Ruffin Show”) and Michael Ian Black (“Wet Hot American Summer”) will serve as team captains for CNN’s upcoming comedy panel series “Have I Got News for You,” adapted from the BBC show. The ten-episode series debuts Saturday, September 14 at 9p.

Two-part “Killer Cakes” premieres Thursday, October 8 on Prime Video. The baking competition, hosted by Matthew Lillard (“Scream”), has contestants “unleash their twisted imaginations and create cakes so disgusting, so disturbing, and so realistic, it’s the stuff of nightmares,” according to the description.

COMING UP

Circle Country announced the television broadcast of Post Malone’s Grand Ole Opry debut on Saturday, August 24 at 9p. This event was filmed on August 14.

RETAIL MEDIA

Grocery TV has expanded its in-store retail media network into pharmacies, rolling out its digital pharmacy solution with a number of the retailers in its network including ShopRite Pharmacy. “For both retailers and brand advertisers, pharmacy represents a valuable touchpoint with customers, especially for healthcare, pharma, and fitness-focused products or services,” said Don Oelke, COO and co-founder at Grocery TV. “Many of the supermarkets in our network have pharmacies, so it was a natural next step.” Grocery TV’s content strategy for pharmacy includes their new health and wellness focused video channels, retailer messaging, and contextually relevant brand advertising. “ShopRite Pharmacy is excited to be expanding the in-store retail media network into the pharmacy area with Grocery TV,” said Darren Caudill, Chief Sales Officer for Wakefern Food Corp., the retailer-owned cooperative and logistics and merchandising arm for ShopRite stores. “They’ve streamlined the process of adding new touchpoints in our stores, and made it simple for us to manage our in-store messaging through their content management system so that we can deliver important information to our ShopRite Pharmacy customers.”

Viamedia announced a strategic partnership with Minerva Networks, a provider of advanced entertainment delivery solutions. The collaboration will integrate Viamedia’s Parrot Ad Decisioning System (ADS) into Minerva’s platforms, aimed at enhancing programmatic ad capabilities for MVPDs and broadcasters. Viamedia’s Parrot ADS software simplifies the advertising process by allowing a single order to cover both linear and streaming inventories, combining them into one invoice. The partnership with Minerva will provide more robust support for ad insertion on additional networks and enable seamless transitions for sales teams to addressable platforms.

July was FOX News Digital’s best month in multiplatform minutes and views since January 2021, according to Comscore, closing out the month reaching 3.9 billion total multiplatform minutes, 1.9 billion total multiplatform views, and 119 million total digital multiplatform unique visitors.

Sports platform OutKick finished July up 8% month over month with 25 million multiplatform views, and saw 6% growth year over year in multiplatform views, according to Comscore.
