Netflix ordered more scripted TV projects through 1Q4 than it has since 2022, according to Ampere Analysis, and Amazon had more quarterly commissions than it has since Ampere started keeping track five years ago. The companies accounted for 53% of worldwide streamers’ commissions, with the majority of titles outside the US. “In Q1 2024, Netflix’s Western European commissions almost achieved parity with North American titles for the first time,” Ampere said. “Netflix is seizing the opportunity for international growth, focusing on proven market providers of portable content such as Spain, India, and South Korea.” Amazon is focusing on India, with 37 orders in the quarter, “cementing Inda as the cornerstone of its international strategy.”
The projection for political spending for the 2024 election cycle has risen from $10.2 billion to a record $10.7 billion at AdImpact. Through June 27, AdImpact found that year-to-date political ad spending in the 2024 election cycle is currently outpacing the 2020 election cycle, at $3.05 billion compared to $2.54 billion. Other findings include:
· Broadcast spending has increased from $5.1 billion to $5.35 billion, a 5% increase from the market intelligence company’s previous projection. CTV spending has increased from $1.35 billion to $1.51 billion, a 12% increase.
· Year-to-date, toss-up races in the Senate have seen $180M while toss-up races in the House have seen $42M.
· Of the $10.69 billion projected for spending in the 2024 election cycle, down ballot races are expected to see the most spending ($3.59 billion). The Presidential race is projected to generate $2.68 billion in ad spend, followed by the Senate ($2.15 billion), House ($1.80 billion) and governor ($0.47 billion).

Hunter Biden has sued Fox News over mock trial series “The Trial of Hunter Biden,” which centers on a fictional trial based on the First Son’s legal woes and includes sexually explicit images of him. The show had been pulled from the Fox Nation streaming service in April after threats from Biden’s attorneys. “The unlawful publication and dissemination of the Intimate Images by Fox was not made for a legitimate public purpose, where the miniseries featuring a mock trial is not accurately reporting on newsworthy events but rather, is a fictionalized trial of a nonexistent case against Mr. Biden, produced for entertainment purposes,” states the lawsuit. Responded Fox News, “Consistent with the First Amendment, Fox News has accurately covered the newsworthy events of Mr. Biden’s own making, and we look forward to vindicating our rights in court.” |

Richard Gere has joined the cast of Paramount+ with Showtime’s espionage political thriller “The Agency” (formerly “The Department”) as a series regular. Currently in production in London, the series is commissioned by Showtime Studios and produced in association with 101 Studios. George Clooney and Grant Heslov will executive produce through Smokehouse Pictures.
In more casting news, Julianne Moore (”May December”), Meghann Fahy (“The White Lotus”) and Milly Alcock (“House of the Dragon”) will lead the cast of Netflix dark comedy “Sirens.”
A docuseries about the 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students, produced by Skydance Television and Story Syndicate, has been picked up by Prime Video. Last year, Skydance optioned a nonfiction book by James Patterson and Vicky Ward about the murders. A scripted adaptation is in development at Amazon MGM Studios.
Sony Pictures Television has taken majority control of Eleventh Hour Films (“The Killing Kind,” “Alex Rider”), with a capital investment it says will “supercharge the next phase of growth” for the company. SPT first invested in Eleventh Hour in 2018. Eve Gutierrez and Paula Cuddy will take the roles of co-CEOs of the company, while founder Jill Green transitions to creative executive producer and chairperson.
Red Arrow Studios International, the TV distribution arm of Seven.One Studios (“Married at First Sight”), has rebranded to Seven.One Studios International. “Changing Red Arrow Studios International’s name to Seven.One Studios International aligns the business more closely with its parent company Seven.One Studios and that of Seven.One Entertainment Group,” said Tim Gerhartz, Managing Sirector of Seven.One Studios International. “It reinforces the Group’s strong commitment to the international production and distribution marketplace.”
Sherri Papini, arrested in 2022 for her 2016 kidnapping hoax, will share her side of the story with ID. “Sherri Papini drew worldwide attention when she went missing and then again, when she returned,” said ID President Jason Sarlanis. “While many perspectives have been told, there is one point of view that the world hasn’t heard and that is from Sherri herself. Investigation Discovery will present a new side of Sherri Papini’s case — told by her in her own words.” Production is underway for the docuseries, slated to premiere on ID in 2025.

Bally Sports Networks has been removed from Optimum TV lineups at the expiration of Optimum’s contract with Bally owner Diamond Sports Group. “Despite our best efforts and continued flexibility to reach a fair and reasonable agreement, Diamond Sports Group continues to seek unsustainable demands that would raise our customers’ TV bills,” said a statement from Optimum. “We do not believe it is fair for Diamond Sports Group to ask customers to pay high rates for their channels when they are still negotiating content rights with various sports leagues and do not yet know what content will be available to their viewers.”
