Revenue for Netflix’s ad-supported service is expected to reach $950 million this year, according to eMarketer, based on predictions for strong ad sales per viewer. Netflix is projected to average $70.44 in ad revenue per viewer for those watching the streamer at least once a month on any device – well above the competition – and is estimated to have more than 20 million ad-supported users in the US, 40 million worldwide. In contrast, eMarketer estimates Hulu’s ad sales per viewer are $45.87; followed by Disney+ ($37.87); Max ($26.49); Peacock ($21.93); and Paramount+ ($8.40).

FOX News Media will offer live coverage of the CNN presidential debate on June 27 in Atlanta. Special programming will be available across all of FOX News Media’s key platforms. Independent Presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. failed to qualify for the June 27 CNN presidential debate, according to reports. In a statement, Kennedy called the exclusion “un-democratic, un-American and cowardly.” CNN said only President Biden and former President Trump met all requirements.

“Jimmy Kimmel Live” has announced its lineup of summer guest hosts, with comedian Martin Short slated to kick off the first week beginning on June 24, with guests including Steve Martin, Selena Gomez, Melissa McCarthy, Sienna Miller, Jelly Roll, and Beck, and musical performances by Imagine Dragons, Jelly Roll, Beck, and The Warning. Anthony Anderson, Kathryn Hahn, Kumail Nanjiani, Lamorne Morris, Jeff Goldblum, RuPaul, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are all set to guest host throughout the summer. PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Patrick Dempsey has joined the cast of Paramount+ drama “Dexter: Original Sin” as a series regular and will play Aaron Spencer, the Captain of the Miami Metro Homicide who has a decades-long relationship with Harry Morgan (played by Christian Slater).

UCP and Jenna Bush Hager’s Thousand Voices, are teaming with Sue Naegle and Ali Krug’s Dinner Party Productions to develop a series adaptation of Chris Whitaker’s novel “All the Colors of the Dark.” Sarah Gubbins, writer/producer for “Pam & Tommy,” “Better Things” and co-creator of “I Love Dick,” will be adapting the project. Naegle, Krug, Hager, Ben Spector and Whitaker will serve as executive producers.

Lifetime has rounded out the cast for upcoming original movie “Terry McMillan Presents: Tempted by Love.” The feature will be headlined by Vaughn W. Hebron (“The Game: Reboot”), who also serves as co-producer, and Donna Biscoe (“The Supremes at Big Earl’s Cafe”). Additionally, Lela Rochon (“Any Given Sunday”) and Loretta Devine, (“Family Reunion”) who have both previously starred in Terry McMillan’s feature film, “Waiting to Exhale,” reunite to star in the film which debuts August 17th at 8p.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

CBS Studios debuted the official trailer and key art for the second season of the original animated kids’ series “Star Trek: Prodigy,” with all 20 episodes slated to premiere July 1 on Netflix in select countries around the world. Season one episodes of the series are currently available on Netflix.

MTV’s hit docuseries, “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta” will return on Tuesday, July 23 at 8p. The season features Amy Luciani, Bambi, Erica Banks, Erica Dixon, Jessica White, Karlie Redd, Kendra Robinson, Khaotic, Kirk Frost, Mendeecees, Momma Dee, Rasheeda, Renni Rucci, Saucy Santana, Scrappy, Shekinah Jo, Sierra Gates, Spice, Yandy, Yung Joc, and ZellSwag, along with newcomers, musical artist Lil Zane and his wife Ashley, with cameo appearances by Atlanta superstar Ralo and his fiancé Missy.

ABC Owned Television Stations’ series “Our America: In The Black” returned on June 20 with a nine-part special, “Our America: In The Black – Conversations With Arlan Hamilton.” Hosted by serial entrepreneur, investor and author Arlan Hamilton, the special continues the conversations surrounding financial health and wellness.

COMING UP

Paramount+ docuseries “Nöthin’ but a Good Time: The Uncensored Story of ‘80’s Hair Metal” will premiere on the service later this year. Directed by Jeff Tremaine (“The Dirt”), the three-part series showcases the ‘80s hard rock phenomenon and features interviews with those who lived the scene, including Bret Michaels, Stephen Pearcy, Nuno Bettencourt, Dave “Snake” Sabo, and Riki Rachtman, along with Corey Taylor and Steve-O, among many others.

Paramount Network announced that “Yellowstone,” produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios, will return on Sunday, November 10 at 8p. The series is currently filming in Montana. Internationally, “Yellowstone” will premiere on Paramount+ in Canada on November 10, the U.K. on November 11 and in Latin America, Brazil and France later in November.

On the heels of his “The Daily Show” success, Jon Stewart will host live shows following the closing night of the Republican & Democratic National Conventions. That includes July 18 from Milwaukee and August 22 from Chicago with the News Team sharing hosting duties throughout both Conventions as part of the show’s on-the-ground election coverage, “Indecision 2024.”

Three-part character driven series “Hope in the Water,” from David E. Kelley and Andrew Zimmern, offers insight into the work of aquaculture and features Martha Stewart, Shailene Woodley and Baratunde Thurston, who connect with fishers, aqua farmers, and scientists who are harvesting aquatic species to feed our growing planet while saving our oceans. Stewart learns the ropes at a scallop farm in episode 2, scheduled to debut July 26 at 9p, sailing into Penobscot Bay where she cooks scallops and notes that Maine’s famous lobsters are now migrating further north in search of colder water.

The BET+ Original Film “Young. Wild. Free.”, starring Sanaa Lathan, Mike Epps, Algee Smith, and Sierra Capri will premiere on Thursday, June 27 on BET+.

Prime Video and Amazon Freevee announced the second season of Australian crime series “Troppo,” starring Thomas Jane and Nicole Chamoun, will premiere on July 25. All eight episodes will be available on July 25, 2024, exclusively on Prime Video and Amazon Freevee in the U.S., UK, Germany, and Austria.

STREAMING

DirecTV and Lionsgate reached a licensing agreement that will make five of the content producer’s channels available to all DirecTV and DirecTV STREAM customers who receive their content via streaming, along with satellite customers who want to access them using the DirecTV App. Joining DirecTV’s streaming lineup are “MovieSphere” (premium movies), “HerSphere” (female-driven stories), “Ebony TV” (Black film and culture in partnership with Ebony Media Group), and the single-series comedy channels “Are We There Yet?” and “Anger Management.” DirecTV will identify other networks from Lionsgate’s Free Ad-supported Streaming Television (FAST) portfolio to add to its streaming lineup in later months.

The bundle hasn’t lost its hold on TV viewers, according to a new Hub Entertainment Research survey. Consumers used 7.4 TV sources for their viewing needs this year, up from 6.4 services in 2023 and even with 2022, according to Hub’s “Best Bundle” report. The number of viewers stacking three or more of the major streamers – Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Hulu and Max – grew to 52% in 2024, up from 40% last year. But juggling multiple sources also increases churn. According to the report, 30% of respondents said they plan to cancel at least one of their TV subscriptions in the next 6 months, while 73% said they didn’t plan on signing up for any new services in the same time frame. But the bundle still has a hold on consumers – 74% said it was extremely to somewhat appealing to have a service that would allow them to set up, cancel, pay for and manage their subscriptions in one place.

TECH TALK

TikTok has asked a federal appellate court to block a new law that could result in the social media site’s outright ban, arguing that the regulation is unconstitutional censorship. Congress passed the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act earlier this year, which bans web hosting services and apps from distributing TikTok unless its parent ByteDance sells its controlling interest within one year. ByteDance is based in China.

About 6% of U.S. households watched TV exclusively on mobile devices in 2023, an increase of more than 1 million homes since 2022, further proof that audience measurement should shift from the current TV household format to more comprehensive “TV accessible” homes, according to the Advertising Research Foundation. Using data from its “DASH 2023 TV Universe Study,” the ARF said the increase in mobile usage is being driven mainly by younger viewers, prompting the need to redefine TV audience measurement to include all who consume TV signals, not just those who own TV sets. The report also found that penetration of paid AVOD services more than doubled in 2023 to nearly half of all US households, while the penetration of SVOD services fell from 79% to 72%.

SPORTS UPDATE

Alianza de Futbol, the largest Hispanic soccer program in the U.S., is celebrating its 20th anniversary with an eight-city tour across major Hispanic markets, featuring five competitive programs: Verizon Copa Alianza, Ford Copita Alianza, Allstate Sueño Alianza, Vix Alianza Femenial, and a special 5v5 tournament and by releasing a special merchandise line, “Para La Cultura.” Alianza has grown from a single tournament in Dallas in 2004 to a multi-dimensional program engaging nearly 22,000 Hispanic soccer players across the country in 2023.

Prime Video will stream the annual WNBA Commissioner’s Cup Championship Game presented by Coinbase for the fourth consecutive season, as the New York Liberty host the Minnesota Lynx for the title on June 25 at 8p from UBS Arena in Belmont Park, New York.

GOING GLOBAL

LGTBQ+ streaming service OUTtv is launching a new channel – OUTflix on Apple TV+ in the UK, available as an add on for Apple TV+ subscribers. The launch is an extension of OUTtv’s partnership with Apple TV+ in the US and Canada, where it has been available as a channel since 2021. In addition, OUTtv has also secured a partnership with global AVOD platform wedotv for a pop-up channel in celebration of Pride Month 2024. OUTtv has also commissioned new UK docuseries “Building Betty & Joan’s,” from the producers of hit series “Live at the Queer Comedy Club” and “Stand Up Specials London.”

Ahead of the upcoming NATPE conference in Budapest June 24-27, WildBrain has reached several deals with platforms in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) for its kids’ content including “Strawberry Shortcake,” “Caillou,” “Fireman Sam” and “Polly Pocket.” AMC has picked up several iterations of WildBrian’s popular “Caillou” and “Fireman Sam” series for its Pan-European JimJam channel, while its Minimax offering in Hungary, Romania, Moldova, Czech Republic, Slovakia and The Balkans will air season one of “Pet Hotel” and “Pet Hotel” shorts. In the Slovak Republic RiK will air the offerings from the “Strawberry Shortcake” franchise and the deal also includes other library content from “Caillou,” “Polly Pocket,” “Bob the Builder” and “Fireman Sam.”

Writer/directors and long-time collaborators Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij have entered into a multi-year creative partnership with independent global entertainment group SISTER to develop, write and produce original film and television projects across all genres.

Nearly 1.2 million viewers watched France defeat Austria 1-0 in Monday’s UEFA European Championship Group Stage match on Fox, up 24% from the equivalent Monday Euro Group Stage telecast in 2021, according to Fox Sports. France-Austria peaked at 1.5 million viewers from 4:45 to 5p, with New Orleans (2.6/7), San Diego (1.7/13) and Miami (1.5/7) as the top local markets. Through Monday, the UEFA European Championship is averaging 1.116 million viewers across Fox and FS1, up 35% compared to the equivalent 2021 tournament to date.

About 8.5 million viewers across North America watched the Edmonton Oilers outpace the Florida Panthers in Wednesday’s Game 5 of the NHL Stanley Cup Finals on ABC, ESPN platforms, CBC, SN and TVA Sports, an increase of 61% from last year’s Game 5. Across North America, the Stanley Cup Final is averaging 7.2 million viewers, up 64% from the 2023 Finals.

A+E Networks said that Executive Vice President of Finance, Christopher Barry, has expanded his remit as Head of Financial Planning and Analysis. In addition, Cliff Ejikeme, who currently serves as Executive Vice President, Controller & Treasurer, will expand his current portfolio to include responsibility for A+E’s Tax Unit. Both will report to David Bank, Chief Financial Officer.

Sesame Workshop has named Bernhard Gloeggler Vice President and General Manager for Europe. He will be responsible for leading Sesame Workshop’s European operations and long-term growth strategy, as well as expanding philanthropic development in the region. Gloeggler will report to Whit Higgins, EVP, Head of Global Enterprises.

StudioCanal has appointed Margaret Conway Head of Physical Production for StudioCanal TV. Conway will be based in the UK reporting to M-K Kennedy, Executive Managing Director TV Series. Emmanuel Jacquelin, who currently oversees physical production for StudioCanal TV’s French series, will report to Conway effective July 1.

Independent advertising technology company Intango has named Ido Amit as Head of Search, spearheading the launch of its new search division, OUNA. Amit brings nearly 15 years of industry experience as he assumes this role and prior to joining Intango last March, he served as R&D Director at SimilarWeb, with previous leadership roles at Conduit, Codefuel and Perion.

Ad tech company Biddeo.io has named Adam Kline as its North America CEO. Kline has more than 30 years’ experience, previously holding leadership roles at Rubicon Organization and 20th Century Fox and will spearhead the company’s expansion into the US market.

PR firm Bob Gold & Associates said it is expanding its core practice areas with the establishment of a streaming media and pay TV communications group to be led by Eric Becker in Denver. The Hollywood Radio and Television Society (HRTS) Board of Directors said it has named Disney Television Studios Senior Vice President of Creative Talent Development & Inclusion Tim McNeal as its new president, succeeding Amazon Studios’ Head of Drama Series Odetta Watkins. Wattpad Webtoon Studios Head of Global Entertainment David Madden was named chairperson.
