Prime Video took the market share lead among SVOD companies in the first quarter with 22%, edging out streaming rival Netflix (21%) but twice that of Hulu and Disney+ combined, according to researcher JustWatch.com. Disney+ and Hulu finished the quarter with 11% and 10% market share, respectively, while AppleTV+ and Paramount+ ended the period with an 8% share each. AppleTV+, Netflix and Paramount+ managed to grow during the period (by one percentage point each), while Max fell by one percentage point to 14%, according to JustWatch.
Equalpride will serve as the exclusive sales agent for Rainbow Media to reach iconic LGBTQ+ brands including Out.com, Pride.com, Advocate.com and the Out100 Awards franchise. Rainbow Media has a monthly reach of 11.5 million followers, 24 million monthly video views, and 4 million monthly engagements. The pairing with Equalpride will boost its social audience 14.5 million, the companies said.
Sinclair, Inc. has joined the Entertainment ID Registry as a member of the Board of Directors. The company will be represented by Mike Palmer, Sinclair’s AVP of Media Management, who will serve on EIDR’s board as Sinclair’s representative for a one-year term. EIDR is a public registry that provides a unique identifier for audio-visual content, designed to provide a standard way of identifying and tracking works across the media supply chain.
O.J. Simpson, NFL star and actor accused of killing his ex-wife, died of cancer on April 10. He was 76 years old. Simpson had a Hall of Fame career as a running back for the Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers and early on made a name in TV in commercials for Hertz rental cars. He later branched out to movies – including “The Towering Inferno,” the “Naked Gun” trilogy, and “Back to the Beach” – but will probably be best known for being acquitted of the murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown-Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman in 1994. The trial helped put cable channel Court TV (now truTV) on the map and set the standard for gavel-to-gavel coverage of sensational litigation. |

A reboot of 90’s prime-time soap “Melrose Place” is reportedly in development at CBS Studios, with former stars Heather Locklear, Laura Leighton and Daphne Zuniga on board. The reboot picks up years after the original Darren Star series and is currently being shopped to streamers and networks, according to Deadline.com.
NEW & RETURNING SERIES
Original series “Talking Sabor” (Talking Flavor), with celebrity chef, entrepreneur, and “MasterChef” co-star Aarón Sánchez will premiere April 24 on Hulu. A collaboration between Sánchez, production company Cocina (a unit of the parent company Mecenas), and Pepsi, the series is a continuation of Cocina’s ongoing collaboration with Disney Advertising as a strategic distributor.
Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of Dubai” returns for season two on June 2 at 9p. Beginning June 11, the series will move to its regular timeslot on Tuesdays at 9p. Episodes will stream the next day on Peacock. The season two cast includes returning housewives Chanel Ayan, Caroline Brooks, Sara Al Madani, Lesa Milan, Caroline Stanbury and new housewife Taleen Marie.
Crime drama “My Life Is Murder” returns to Acorn TV with a two-episode premiere on June 17, co-premiering on BBC America with two new episodes airing weekly on Mondays on both platforms. The series stars Lucy Lawless (“Spartacus,” “Xena: Warrior Princess”) as fearless and unapologetic investigator Alexa Crowe.
Two-time National Daytime Emmy Award-winning lifestyle series “George to the Rescue,” from NBCUniversal Local’s LXTV Productions, returns for a 15th season on April 13 to NBC stations across the country.
Law&Crime Network will premiere its latest new series “Switched,” hosted and developed by cop-turned-influencer Ryan Tillman on April 13 at 9p. The series flips the scripts of traditional crime series by having regular citizens switch roles with law enforcement officers as the cameras roll to re-enact real life police encounters.

Prime Video held an event for upcoming reality series “Going Home with Tyler Cameron” on April 10 in Hollywood at Harriet’s Rooftop with the former “The Bachelorette” heartthrob and a host of special guests from reality TV and social media influencers. The show is produced by Amazon MGM Studios and ITV America’s High Noon Entertainment, and executive produced by Scott Feeley, Sarah Presta, Glenna Stacer Sayles, Chaz Morgan, and Tyler Cameron. It will debut on April 18.
NBC Sports Next’s latest GolfPass series – “Golf’s Top Instructors” – will debut April 16 on its website, app and connected devices. The 10-episode series kicks off with renowned golf instructor Jim McLean sharing knowledge gleaned from more than 30 years of teaching some of the best golfers in the world.
Fox Sports will present full coverage of the 148th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show Presented by Purina Pro Plan, May 11-14 across its family of networks, digital platforms, and WestminsterKennelClub.org. Kartoon Studios said its direct to consumer streaming services, including Kartoon Channel!, achieved profitability through the first two months of 2024. This comes after the company reported record revenue and EBITDA breakeven in the fourth quarter of 2023.
LGBTQ+ streaming service OUTtv said it is the new exclusive global SVOD rights holder, excluding the UK, for the hit BBC series Glow Up: Britain’s Next Make Up Star.” Produced by Wall to Wall Media for the BBC, season six will launch on OUTtv channels and SVOD services in Spring 2024.
Apple TV+ unveiled the trailer for its new sci-fi thriller “Dark Matter.” The series, starring Joel Edgerton, Academy Award winner Jennifer Connelly, Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi and Oakes Fegley, is based on the best-selling book by Blake Crouch. The nine-episode Apple original series will premiere globally on Apple TV+ with the first two episodes on May 8 on Apple TV+, followed by one new episode every Wednesday through June 26.
Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version)” performed well for Disney+, clocking 677 million viewing minutes in the U.S. over its first four days (March 11-17) and finishing second among movies and eighth among all titles in Nielsen’s streaming rankings for the week. Disney had previously said “The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version)” logged 4.6 million views (total viewing time divided by running time). The Nielsen data works out to about 3.2 million views for the 3.5-hour movie.

Video software provider Synamedia is gearing up to demonstrate its video network portfolio at the upcoming 2024 NAB Show in Las Vegas April 13-17, from B2B distribution, D2C streaming, edge delivery, ad-insertion and beyond. Synamedia’s MEG.mini edge gateway, its virtual Digital Content Manager (vDCM), Quortex Play, new Fluid EdgeCDN capabilities, the company’s modular approach to server-side ad insertion (SSAI) and other CDN advancements will be highlighted at the show.
Agora Inc. has partnered with EZDRM to bring content protection to live broadcasting, integrating its real-time engagement capabilities with EZDRM’s digital rights management technology to provide secure, end-to-end real-time media streaming.
Click-through rates for Meta’s Instagram were up 131% year-over-year in March, according to researcher Tracer, fueled mainly by its Reels product, which saw CTR’s rise 495% during the period. CPMs for Instagram were up about 4% year-over-year, but dipped 22% for Reels, suggesting a possible increase in available inventory due to more users engaging in the service or a lack of advertisers focusing on the opportunity, Tracer said. YouTube saw a 187% increase in CTR during the period, while CPMs were down 1%.

Tennis Channel will have complete live coverage of the Billie Jean King Cup qualifier between the United States and Belgium April 12-13. The broadcast gets underway Friday, April 12 at 6p and again Saturday, April 13, at 2p. The event will be held at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, with the winner advancing to the tournament finals in Seville, Spain, in November. This also marks the debut of Tennis Hall of Famer Lindsay Davenport as captain of the American Team, on which she has played 20 times. Davenport has been a Tennis Channel analyst since 2008.
Lax.com said it has purchased Universal Lacrosse, making it the largest ecommerce (Lax.com and Universallacrosse.com) and team dealer dedicated strictly to the sport of lacrosse. Lax.com will also be acquiring Universal’s 10 retail stores.
Michelob ULTRA is joining forces with Formula 1 team Williams Racing for “Lap of Legends,” a one-hour special it claims is the first real vs. virtual race. Current Formula 1 driver Logan Sargeant will race against virtual avatars of Williams Racing legends Mario Andretti, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill, Jacques Villeneuve and Jenson Button. “Lap of Legends” can be seen on AMC, BBC America, and The Roku Channel at 10p on May 14 in the U.S. The one-hour film will also be distributed across 28 countries around the world, including Canada, Mexico and Brazil.
The Pro Padel League said it amassed more than 1 million streams on its YouTube channel between April 2 and April 7, accumulating a total watch time of over 280,000 hours. The league’s second event of the season is underway, with round robin matches taking place in Miami at the ULTRA CLUB April 9-12 and semifinals on April 13 and the Final on April 14.

Banijay said Shine Portugal, part of Banijay Iberia, will produce ten episodes of “Starstruck” for public broadcaster RTP. It is the sixth adaptation of the show, which was originally created by Banijay UK label, Remarkable Entertainment. Launching first in the UK, “Starstruck” aired for two seasons on ITV and ITVX, and has also been adapted in Chile, Bulgaria, Belgium and Denmark.
Following its streaming debut on Disney+, original animated series “Iwájú,” a joint effort between Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pan-African Entertainment Company Kugali, will premiere on Disney Channel across Africa this April and May. “Iwájú” will premiere each weekday from April 22 – 26 with a marathon on April 27. Special repeat broadcasts will run from April 29 to May 4 with a marathon on May 5 and on Africa Day, May 25, viewers will be able to view another six-episode marathon.
Amazon Prime has acquired dramedy series “Self Modulation” from producers Falcon Films and Arna Media. The series is the first project in a multi-show deal partly financed by Arna Media, who plans to invest in two projects annually with Falcon Films. “Self Modulation” is produced by Sobhi Sannan, Rami Sannan and Raed Sannan for Falcon Films and Nadezda Motina and Aram Hovhannisyan for Arna Media. The ten-part, 50-minute episode series will air in Q2 2024. |

After seven days of viewing across ABC, Hulu and digital platforms, ABC drama “9-1-1” reached a season high in Total Viewers (10.72 million), with the conclusion of the series’ three-episode story arc turning in its most-watched telecast in more than two years. “9-1-1” was up 3% week-to-week in Adults 18-49 (2.18 rating vs. 2.12 rating) and across linear it was the top entertainment program of the night among both Total Viewers (7.59 million) and Adults 18-49 (0.88 rating).
