CBS has renewed Dick Wolf’s trio of FBI dramas – “FBI,” “FBI: Most Wanted” and “FBI: International.” Flagship show “FBI” received a three- season renewal, encompassing seasons seven through nine. “FBI: Most Wanted” will return for its sixth season and “FBI: International” comes back for its fourth season. All three will air in the 2024/25 season.

The Interactive Advertising Bureau has come out in support of The American Privacy Rights Act, a bipartisan effort spearheaded by Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Washington) and Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Washington) that could create a national law regulating how companies collect, share and use online personal data. “IAB’s over 700 members, including major brands, publishers, agencies, and ad tech firms, are counting on a national data privacy law to replace an increasingly complex patchwork of state laws, raising costs for companies of every size. We believe in stronger protections for consumers and the protection of the benefits of digital advertising and the ad-supported internet for everyone,” said IAB’s Executive Vice President for Public Policy Lartease Tiffith.

About 86% of advertisers expect increases or maintaining levels in TV and video ad spend (up from 78% in 2023), according to iSpot’s survey of sell-side customers, the “2024 Upfronts Report: Linear & Streaming Ad Strategies Among Top Advertisers.” This year, 76% of advertisers plan to spend more than 10% of their upfront budgets on digital platforms (up from 71% last year), with the number one challenge for brands being streaming measurement fragmentation. Also in 2024: 74% of advertisers are interested in transacting on new currencies, up from 69% in 2023.

Bundling streaming credits with broadband service can drastically reduce monthly churn, according to research by MyBundleTV. Using data from 300 subscribers to Norvado’s 1 Gbps fiber PickME Plan internet broadband service – which includes $20 in monthly streaming credits using MyBundle’s Streaming Choice program – the company found after 12 months the average churn rate was 4.3%, half of the 8.6% industry average monthly churn rate according to Antenna’s “State of Subscriptions – Premium SVOD” study from February 2024.

New York City-based studio and streaming network FilmRise has acquired certain digital rights to the SYFY Channel zombie series “Z Nation” from The Asylum, Inc. The deal gives FilmRise worldwide distribution rights to 69 hours to all five seasons of the sci-fi, horror/drama series for all digital media including ad-supported streaming, digital linear, AVOD, FAST, SVOD, FVOD, TVOD, EST, as well as exclusive airline and ancillary rights.

Because April is Autism Acceptance Month, PBS Kids and Fred Rogers Productions have launched a free online game – Cousin Hodie Playdate – based on the hit PBS Kids puppet series, “Donkey Hodie.” The game was specifically created to help develop empathy in all kids and was designed with neurodiverse children in mind.

KO Distribution said Catalonia’s 3Cat has greenlit its own original production of musical competition series “Zenith.” The deal was bartered by Lavinia Audiovisual, who secured the format rights and is set to produce the series next fall. KO Distribution has also secured new format deals with Bandicoot in the United Kingdom and Eureka Productions in Australia.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Outdoor Channel’s latest culinary adventure, “Life of Fire,” premiers on May 6 at 9p, hosted by renowned Tennessee pitmaster Pat Martin. It takes viewers on a journey into America’s rich barbecue culture and the art of live fire cooking.

Environmentally-focused FAST channel EarthDay 365 has launched on Amazon Freevee in the U.S. Founded by documentary film studio and unscripted TV producer/distributor K2 Studios and actress/activist Pamela Anderson, EarthDay 365 includes award-winning TV series, specials, and IMAX documentary films and a steady stream of new shows – nature, wildlife, science, space and conservation and original series. K2 Studios is handling distribution in the US, with Amsterdam-based Static Waves Media Group responsible for European/international distribution. A portion of the advertising revenue generated will be donated to environmental causes.

Future Today has launched three seasons of classic Pokémon animation including “Pokémon the Series: XY,” “Pokémon the Series: XY Kalos Quest” and “Pokémon the Series: XYZ” to its free ad-supported streaming service, HappyKids.

COMING UP

Black Public Media will hold its seventh PitchBLACK Forum – the largest pitch competition for independent filmmakers and creative technologists producing works about the Black experience – on April 24 in Manhattan. Producers and technologists will compete for up to $150,000 in funding for documentary projects and up to $50,000 in funding for immersive projects before a panel of media professionals and an in-person and virtual audience of funders, distributors and industry leaders. Winners will be announced at the PitchBLACK Awards on April 25, honoring award-winning director, producer and film editor Sam Pollard. The annual event is sponsored by Netflix and PBS.

AXS TV said its original cooking series “Sounds Delicious with Carnie Wilson” will premiere on April 16 at 8:30p.

STREAMING

Asia-based FAST channel/AVOD distributor NEW ID joins the list of content providers on streamer TCL+, with a slate of five new channels that will debut in April, ranging from Korean moves, drama, kids and lifestyle for audiences in the United States and Canada. NEW ID currently offers music channel NEW KPOP and premium Chinese drama channel OnDemandChina and with the new partnership, TCL+ viewers in North America will gain access to “NEW KFOOD;” “NEW KMOVIES;” “BABY SHARK TV;” “Rakuten Viki;” and “My Little Pet.”

TECH TALK

Sinclair will begin using AI for language translation beginning with “Petko Unfiltered,” a Tennis Channel series that offers first-person perspective on trending tennis topics. The episodes, which are recorded and presented by Tennis Channel in English in several European countries and on its second network T2 in the United States, will be translated into Spanish to air on Tennis Channel in Spain beginning later this month.

NHK Cosmomedia America, a subsidiary of NHK, has chosen Cleeng’s entire portfolio to support their direct-to-consumer (D2C) streaming service, Jme. Launched on April 1, Jme is utilizing Cleeng’s services and solutions to manage subscribers, increase customer lifetime value and introduce new monetization techniques. Jme is using Cleeng’s Core subscriber management system, Merchant for payment and checkout optimization, ChurnIQ for churn prediction analytics and Hi5 for AI-enhanced customer care.

Innovid announced the launch of its Harmony Initiative, aimed at optimizing the CTV advertising ecosystem. Harmony Direct, the first in a wave of new products, is designed to streamline the supply path, ensuring more advertiser dollars go toward working media and increasing revenue opportunities for publishers. “As TV speeds toward its fully digital future, Innovid believes that TV should remain open for everyone and controlled by no one,” said Zvika Netter, CEO & Co-Founder, Innovid.

SPORTS UPDATE

Family-friendly sport and entertainment group Dude Perfect said it has formed a strategic partnership with private investment firm Highmount Capital, which includes a 9-figure growth capital investment that the company will use to pursue new opportunities and projects, add to its slate of creative partnerships, and build a management team. CAA Evolution served as the exclusive financial advisor to Dude Perfect and King & Spalding acted as legal advisor. Highmount Capital was represented by Stinson LLP.

NBCUniversal said it expects to capture more than $1.25 billion in ad revenue for the upcoming Paris Olympics, surpassing the level it reached for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, which attracted just north of $1.2 billion in ad sales. According to Dan Lovinger, president Olympic and Paralympic Sales for NBCUniversal, the programmer has already secured about $1.2 billion in ad commitments for the games, which begin on July 26. Advertisers have purchased all the commercial inventory for traditional TV and digital video for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the games, he added, and NBCU has sold 13 single-sponsored half hour segments in prime time that would have been commercial-free (called “Prime Pods”). Lovinger said that more than $350 million of the commitments secured so far have been from advertisers new to the Olympics.

GOING GLOBAL

LGBTQ+ streaming service OUTtv is rebranding its UK and Ireland streaming service Froot.tv to OUTflix and launching a Direct-to-Consumer app offering across the region. In addition, OUTflix has launched across the Nordics through a deal with Allente which covers Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland. Since launching in the UK in 2020 as a DTC offering, the service has grown its partnerships to include OUTtv Proud, a FAST channel now available via Channelbox on Freeview, Plex and Netgem.

AMC Networks International UK has launched two new streaming collections – AMC Stories and AMC Reality — on ITVX, the British ad-supported video-on-demand streaming service operated by ITV. Both collections will include more than 1,100 hours of content. AMC Stories features original series like “Brockmire,” “The Son,” “Lodge 49,” “Creepshow”, and “Portlandia,” while AMC Reality includes “Love After Lock Up,” “Growing Up Hip Hop,” “Amazing Wedding Cakes,” “Million Dollar Matchmaker,” and “LA Hair.” AMC Stories is available today, and AMC Reality launches in May.

PBS has joined as co-producer of Lion Television’s upcoming factual series “Pompeii: The New Dig,” All3Media International said, and has acquired broadcast rights for the US. The series, which will broadcast in 2024, was originally commissioned by BBC Two in the UK and is co-produced with Arte France, in association with All3Media International. It will premiere on BBC Two in the UK on April 15 and on PBS, PBS.org, and the PBS App. in the US on May 15. Additional episodes will air on May 22 and 29.

In national syndication through March 31, “Family Feud” was just behind “Jeopardy!” for the No. 1 spot with a 4.65 to a 4.70, while remaining well above the competition in demo with a 1.38. “Sherri” fell to third place time in demo with “Dr. Drew” at a .26.

FOX News Channel said it averaged 173,000 viewers in weekday primetime during April 1-7 in the A18-49 and A25-54 demos, securing 60% of the cable news share, its best since May 2022. In the 25-54 demo, FNC saw 275,000 viewers in weekday primetime, securing 58% of the cable news share, the highest since March 2023. In primetime (8p-11p), FNC earned 1.9 million viewers and 221,000 A25-54. In total day (6a-6a), FNC posted 1.25 million viewers and 152,000 in the 25-54 demo. It was the 13th consecutive week that FNC has finished first in all of cable with total day viewers. Additionally, FNC posted the top 14 shows in both the 18-49 and 25-54 demos in cable news and the network posted 81 of the top 100 cable news telecasts for the week.
