Eighty-one percent of Gen Z consumers say multicultural and diverse consumers’ tastes and buying behaviors have a major impact on their brand choices, according to “Cracking the Code: How Multicultural & Gen Z Reshape Mainstream Marketing,” from Direct Digital Holdings. Multicultural and diverse people’s influence (57%) of total mainstream consumers – including GenXers and Boomers – outpace their current share of the US population (40%). Top categories where Gen Z cite big/some influence, include Food/Restaurants (90%); Fashion (89%) and Technology (76%).

Sports, entertainment and talent firm Endeavor has agreed to be acquired by private equity group Silver Lake in a deal that values the company at $13 billion and will remove it from the public markets. Endeavor went public three years ago in a deal that valued it at $10.6 billion, but when the Silver Lake deal is complete, expected in Q1 2025, it will once again become a private entity.

Stars Collective has optioned “Leigh Howard and the Ghosts of Simmons-Pierce Manor” and will explore film and TV adaptations of the best-selling YA novel.

Cinereach (“Beasts of the Southern Wild”) is taking a new direction under new CEO Jennifer Strachan, concentrating on operating primarily as a media incubator focused on narrative research and strategy development. Cinereach’s production work will also expand beyond film, to new and emerging media platforms.

Apploff Entertainment has teamed up with actor/E Street-er Stevie Van Zandt (“The Sopranos”) on new music format “The Jam.” A weekly live-to-tape event, the series combines performances by global stars and new artists, story packages, and interviews. “It’s been too long since there’s been a dance party with live bands on,” says Van Zandt, who will serve as executive producer. “We’ll be that plus a presentation of whatever is coolest in the news, products, and culture that week. The weekend starts here!”

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

ABC renewed “9-1-1” for season eight. The season seven premiere in March delivered 11.76 million total viewers within the first seven days.

Game Show Network will debut three new original series this year – “Beat the Bridge” (June), “Tic Tac Dough” (August) and “Flip Side” (September). Also returning to GSN will be perennial favorites “Blank Slate,” “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune.”

Magnolia Network unveiled its lineup of cable and streaming premieres for the month of April, including new seasons of “Homegrown” (April 6), “Restoration Road with Clint Harp” (April 22), “Restoring Galveston” (April 30), “Building off the Grid” (April 11) and the season five cable premiere of “First Time Fixer” (April 5).

Lionsgate’s Debmar-Mercury has renewed daytime talk show “Sherri” for a third season in more than 95% of the U.S. “Sherri” had earlier received a two-year renewal (through the 2024-25 season) from Fox Television Stations. The show ranked second this season among all syndicated talkers among women aged 25-54 in the daytime demo, up from third place in its freshman term.

“Grey’s Anatomy” has been renewed for its 21st season on ABC, coming as the strike-shortened 20th season recently returned to the network. The renewal brings the Shonda Rhimes-created series back under its second season under showrunner Meg Marinis.

COMING UP

HBO Original documentary An American Bombing: The Road to April 19th,” directed by filmmaker Marc Levin and executive produced by Katie Couric, debuts Tuesday, April 16 at 9p on HBO.

AXS TV debuts its new original series, “Music Mayhem,” exploring secrets and scandals that have captivated generations of rock enthusiasts, on Monday, April 15 at 8p.

PBS’ American Masters continues its series of “Thought Leaders” documentaries with the premiere of “The Incomparable Mr. Buckley,” on April 5 at 9p. The doc follows the personal and political journey of one of the architects of the modern American conservative movement, William F. Buckley.

NewsNation will present special live coverage throughout the day of the 2024 total solar eclipse on April 8. Senior national correspondent Brian Entin will co-anchor a special broadcast from network headquarters in Chicago from 1- 4:30p, with “NewsNation Now” anchors Nichole Berlie and Connell McShane as the eclipse makes its way across the U.S.

STREAMING

Ad-supported streaming platform The Network, scheduled to launch this spring in the U.S., thinks it has the solution to scrolling fatigue – two weekly pieces of new original content, and nothing else. Created by Aram Rappaport, founder of the creative ad agency The Boathouse with backing from BH Media Holdings, the service will be available on all devices across Apple, Android, Roku, Amazon Fire, and the web and will release dramas on Tuesdays and comedies on Thursdays. That’s it – Rapaport says The Network won’t license catalogs, old content, nor will it build libraries of shows to justify subscription fees. Its first original shows will be the inaugural episodes of drama “The Green Veil” and comedy “Chivalry.”

Cineverse Corp. has landed a new distribution deal with Australia-based Network 10, a division of Paramount Global, for its “Crime Hunters” and “Comedy Dynamics” free, ad-supported streaming television channels. The two FAST channels became available on 10 Play, Network 10’s multi-platform catch up TV and video portal last month and are part of the streamer’s “Live TV with Pluto TV” lineup.

TECH TALK

Wurl has partnered with IRIS.TV to make emotional data from its GenAI-based ad product Brand Discovery available for programmatic activation. Brand Discovery allows advertisers to align their ads with content in real time and coupled with IRIS.TV’s IRIS-enabled™ PMPs gives buyers access to emotions-based Deal IDs to deliver CTV ads within its live news and sports content and VOD streaming inventory.

Artificial Intelligence company Aarki launched its all-new AI platform, designed to simplify the advertising process and streamline the complexity of reaching and engaging with consumers. The platform uses deep neural networks and Multi-Objective Bid Optimization to decipher signals indicative of successful consumer conversion, retention, and consequent publisher revenue generation.

TransUnion is partnering with MRI-Simmons to improve the data used in addressable marketing campaigns, allowing data to be layered onto TransUnion’s identity spine, enhancing MRI-Simmons’ 60,000 consumer variables for data enrichment and activation. MRI-Simmons’ audiences are also now available in TransUnion’s TruAudience® Data Marketplace.

DNEG has acquired the exclusive license to Ziva, a toolset for the creation of digital characters and creatures, from Unity. Under the terms of the transaction, DNEG will also onboard a significant proportion of the Ziva team.

Fortune has signed a multi-year partnership agreement with STN Video that will make STN its online video platform, incorporating STN Video player technology on its website to create additional revenue streams and giving STN’s more than 2,000 publishing partners access to Fortune’s business content.

SPORTS UPDATE

The United Football League kicked off the spring football season with a bang, as 1.349 million viewers tuned in to Fox to watch kicker Jake Bates nail a 64-yard game-winning field goal that lifted the Michigan Panthers over the St. Louis Battlehawks in the season opener for both teams. That’s up 56% from last year’s broadcast network average of 865,000 viewers for regular season USFL and XFL games on Fox, ABC and NBC, according to Fox Sports. Nearly 1.2 million viewers watched the Birmingham Stallions defeat the Arlington Renegades, a 37% rise from last year’s average. Next up, the Houston Roughnecks will meet the D.C. Defenders Sunday at 4p on Fox.

DAZN, and combat promoter Golden Boy Promotions are teaming up again for the “40 days” documentary series with a three-episode arc leading up to the boxing showdown between Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia, which will be aired live exclusively on DAZN April 20.

Warner Bros. International Television Production unveiled its new programming slate for MIPTV Tuesday filled with documentaries, reality and scripted shows. Documentaries include “D-Day: The Unheard Tapes,” and “Britain Behind Bars: A Secret History.” The reality genre is represented by “FBoy Island” spin-off “FGirl Island” (also hosted by Nikki Glaser), “Kevin Hart’s Muscle Car Crew,” gay dating series “Boys Like Boys,” and “Glow Up China.”

GRB Media Ranch has purchased four new docuseries ripped from the headlines: “Tupac: 187,” “Stealing Churchill,” “God & Country” and “Unfit, all which will be presented at MIPDoc and MIPTV next week.

Big Media has greenlit production for a new docuseries – “Fatal Engineering” – co-produced with RTL Germany’s free-to-air channel NTV Production. Under the agreement with NTV, the broadcaster will have exclusive free TV, SVOD and AVOD rights to the series in Germany and non-exclusive rights in German-speaking Europe.

During the week of March 25, FOX News Channel continued to lead all of basic cable with total day viewers, drawing 2,009,000 viewers and 227,000 A25-54. In total day, FNC posted 1,307,000 viewers and 160,000 in the news demo.

FOX Business Network (FBN) ended the first quarter of 2024 notching the top two business programs for two straight years, according to Nielsen. “Kudlow” was the top business program with 289,000 total viewers, while FBN’s three-hour market open show “Varney & Co.” placed second with 253,000 total viewers.

Fox Sports’ opening weekend broadcast of the two-game series between Major League Baseball’s New York Yankees and Houston Astros attracted more than 2.5 million viewers, up 14% from last year’s MLB home opener (2.2 million viewers) and up 35% over last year’s Fox MLB regular season average (1.875 million).

FloSports, promoted Chief Content Officer Jayar Donlan to Chief Operating Officer. In the new role, Donlan will oversee key stages of the FloSports business from deal creation to implementation across content, including critical oversight of its streaming operations.

“SCTV” (1976-1984) original cast member and Emmy-winning writer Joe Flaherty
died Monday after a brief illness. He was 82. Pittsburgh-native Flaherty played dad Harold Weir on “Freaks and Geeks” (1999-2000) and was featured in “Back to the Future Part II,” “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy,” “Happy Gilmore” and “1941”. He shared two Emmys for outstanding writing in a music or variety series for “SCTV” in 1982 and 1983.
