Disney CEO Bob Iger can count on George Lucas’ support in Disney’s proxy battle with activist investor Nelson Peltz. “Creating magic is not for amateurs,” said the “Star Wars” creator in a statement. “When I sold Lucasfilm just over a decade ago, I was delighted to become a Disney shareholder because of my long-time admiration for its iconic brand and Bob Iger’s leadership. When Bob recently returned to the company during a difficult time, I was relieved. No one knows Disney better. I remain a significant shareholder because I have full faith and confidence in the power of Disney and Bob’s track record of driving long-term value. I have voted all of my shares for Disney’s 12 directors and urge other shareholders to do the same.” Peltz and his Trian Management are seeking control of two Disney board seats.

Donald Trump filed a defamation suit against ABC News and George Stephanopoulos for the anchor’s interview with Rep. Nancy Mace on “This Week.” Stephanopoulos questioned how Mace, a rape victim, could endorse Trump, who he described multiple times as having been found liable for the rape of E. Jean Carroll. The lawsuit notes Trump was found liable for sexual abuse, not rape, and claims Stephanopoulos’ statements were “false, intentional, malicious and designed to cause harm.” The judge in the Carroll case later clarified that the jury’s finding did not mean that Carroll “failed to prove that Mr. Trump ‘raped her’ as many people commonly understand the word ‘rape.’” ABC News had no comment.

Meta is seeking an emergency injunction to halt an in-house FTC hearing that could lead to a ban on the monetization of teen users’ data. The FTC wants to amend its 2020 settlement with the social media giant, which required Meta to pay $5 billion and implement new privacy oversight, and add terms that would prevent Meta from using minors’ data to fuel ad targeting or algorithms, and prohibit it from launching new products or services without confirmation that its privacy program doesn’t have weaknesses.

CBS has renewed “NCIS: Sydney” for a second season. The series premiere in November reached 10.2 million viewers on linear in the US, and was the number one new series of the fall.

Nickelodeon’s “That Girl Lay Lay” will end with season two. The teen comedy starring hip-hop artist Alaya “That Girl Lay Lay” High and Gabrielle Nevaeh Green concludes tonight at 8p.

Comcast NBCUniversal and NBCUniversal Local announced that NBCUniversal Local Impact Grants is returning for its seventh year and will award $2.5 million in unrestricted funds to eligible nonprofits located in and servicing one of the 11 NBC and Telemundo owned stations’ markets across the US. “Our local grants program provides vital support to many impactful organizations to help advance their missions to serve our communities in meaningful ways,” said Valari Staab, Chairman, NBCUniversal Local.

The entire 400-episode library of true-crime series “Forensic Files” has been acquired by Content Partners. Calling the series “the pioneer of true crime television,” John Moss, Content Partners President, said, “Premiering at a time when advancements in forensic DNA analysis were gaining traction in the news and high-profile cases, the show paved the way for media programs that educate.”

Netflix has ordered football docuseries “Receiver” from NFL Films, Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions and Patrick Mahomes’ 2PM Productions, the muscle behind “Quarterback.” The eight-parter kicks off this summer.

“The Good Daughter,” starring and executive produced by Jessica Biel (“The Sinner”), has landed at Peacock. The suspense thriller from Fifth Season and Made Up Stories is based on Karen Slaughter’s novel about a woman forced to confront demons from her past.

Casting notes: James Cromwell (“Succession”) and Stana Katic (“Castle”) have been added to the guest star cast of Fox crime drama “Murder in a Small Town”…Patton Oswalt (“A.P. Bio”) has joined the recurring cast of Kurt Sutter’s upcoming Western drama, “The Abandons.” Also onboard are Sarah White (“The Bastard Executioner”), Michael Ornstein (“Sons of Anarchy”) and Ellle-Maija Tailfeathers (“Three Pines”).

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Andscape, the Black multimedia platform from Disney and ESPN, announced new anthology franchise “&360,” exploring the influence of Black culture on American society. The franchise premieres with documentary film “Hip-Hop and the White House,” April 22 on Hulu.

Season four of “The Challenge: All Stars” drops Wednesday, April 10 on Paramount+. The competition for $300,000 takes place in Cape Town, South Africa.

COMING UP

PBS: America @ 250, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the country’s founding in 2026, will include the largest engagement effort in the network’s history, with events in more than 75 markets. Highlights include “The American Revolution,” a six-part series co-directed by Ken Burns, Sarah Botstein and David Schmidt in the fall of 2025. “This is a milestone PBS was made to celebrate,” said PBS President and CEO Paula Kerger. “Over the next three years, PBS: America @ 250 will give all Americans the opportunity to reflect, come together, discuss, and debate what America means today, tomorrow, and for future generations.”

Bailey Zimmerman, Jelly Roll, Keith Urban, Lainey Wilson and Sam Hunt join host Kelsea Ballerini as performers at the 2024 CMT Music Awards, airing Sunday, April 7 at 8p on CBS.

FOX Nation has renewed “Crime Cam 24/7” for a second season. New episodes are set to roll out every Friday, beginning on March 29 at 6p. The program will again air in the same timeslot as hit series “COPS,” which returns for a new season this fall.

STREAMING

Streaming viewing in February was up 10% year-over-year to a 37.7% share for total day viewing, according to Nielsen. YouTube hit its best share ever at 9.3%, up 0.7% from January, to lead premium streamers. Netflix was in second place, dipping from a 7.8% share to 7.5%. Among major FAST channels, Pluto TV rose 10% to a 0.8% share, Tubi, saw an 8.3% lift to 1.7%, and Roku Channel was up 8.1% to a 1.2% share. With a Super Bowl boost, Paramount+ was up 24%, for a 1.1% share in February.

For the last several years, outside of the US, more people have signed up for Prime in India than anywhere else in the world, said Mike Hopkins, Head of Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios, at the company’s Prime Video Presents India Showcase. “India is a key geography for us,” noted Hopkins. Forty original series and 29 films were announced at the event.

Surprise! Taylor Swift’s movie is a hit on Disney+. “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” is the streamer’s top concert film ever, with 4.6 million views after three days.

There’s a new AVOD in town. Or there will be starting April 30, with the launch of The Network, described as a platform that “seeks to declutter the streaming experience, eliminating audiences’ endless scrolling to find appealing series and films.” The streamer will release two originals at a time: dramas on Tuesdays and comedies on Thursdays. Created by Aram Rappaport, founder of the creative ad-agency The Boathouse with backing from BH Media Holdings, the service will be available on all devices across Apple, Android, Roku, Amazon Fire, and web.

Paramount+’s international ad-supported subscription offering, the “Basic (with ads)” plan, will roll out in April in Canada and in June in Australia, priced at $6.99 CAD and AUD, respectively. The Paramount+ “Premium” plan is also headed to Europe, beginning with France this month.

TCLtv+, the streaming service offered by electronics company, TCL, has added 13 new FAST channels. Offerings include Judge Faith, Nolly Africa, Craftsy TV, Beyond Paranormal, Pursuit Up, Air & Space, FloRacing, MavTV Select, WatchMojo, Hipstr, Travel Escapes, GoTraveler and FamilyTime.

SPORTS ROUNDUP

ESPN will remain the exclusive global rights holder for the College Football Playoff through the 2031-32 season, thanks to an estimated $7.8 billion extension to its current deal. With the CFP set to expand to 12 teams, ESPN’s package will include all four of the new first-round games each year. ESPN’s existing New Year’s Six package will now be the CFP’s quarterfinals and semifinals. The initial rounds will be followed by the CFP National Championship game, simulcast on ABC in 2026-27.

LIV Golf and AEG Presents struck an exclusive multi-year partnership that will see AEG Presents and its subsidiary, Concerts West, book musical acts and produce live concerts for LIV Golf events around the world. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to join forces with LIV Golf to bring world-class entertainment to this exciting new golf league,” said Mark Norman, SVP of Global touring of Concerts West. “This felt like such a natural fit for us, and to sit right at the intersection of sports and music will enable us to super serve an audience that’s looking for an elevated experience at LIV Golf events and tournaments.”

The Professional Fighters League and Warner Bros. Discovery announced an exclusive US media rights agreement for the Bellator Champion Series, a mixed martial arts championship that previously aired on Showtime. The series, including eight events staged in cities across the globe, will stream on Max.

Monumental Sports Network has a new home, including a production facility and broadcast studios located adjacent to Capital One Arena in downtown Washington, D.C. Fans will see the new studio featured during on-air broadcasts beginning with the Wizards’ home game on Thursday, March 21 against the Sacramento Kings

“We had initial concerns about the early promises of a second-half 2023 recovery,” wrote MoffattNathanson senior research analyst Michael Nathanson in a note about linear TV advertising. “In all honesty, despite these concerns … linear TV has ended up even worse than we expected.” Nathanson lowered his projections for broadcast and cable revenue to be down 2.6% to $27.5 billion in 2024, versus an earlier call for a 0.2% dip. Next year, Nathanson is looking for a drop of 12.4%, to $24.2 billion.

Telemundo’s Monday-Sunday 7-11p primetime delivered an average 356,000 viewers A18-49, 117,000 A18-34 and over 1.1 million total viewers. Monday-Friday numbers were 398,000 A18-49, 133,000 A18-34 and nearly 1.3 million total viewers driven by “La Casa de los Famosos” and “El Señor de los Cielos.”
