DirecTV offering customers a $12 per month discount if they choose to opt out of receiving their local TV stations through DirecTV. “Consumers have been voting with their wallets for years that pay TV — as currently constructed — is too expensive and restricts their choices,” said DirecTV Chief Content Officer Rob Thun. “Our new ‘No Locals’ package enables customers to take an important step forward in culling out certain types of content they may no longer care to watch and better balance the price they are willing to pay.” New and existing satellite customers are eligible for the offer, and can opt out for as long as they want.
Proxy advisory firm Glass Lewis handed a win to Disney, citing a “credible effort to shift key operational priorities under the leadership of one of the most well-respected CEOs in the industry” as the reason Disney shareholders should vote only for Disney’s 12 nominees for the board. Responded Mark Parker, Chairman of the Board, “In its recommendation, Glass Lewis clearly identifies the strength of the diverse skillsets across our Board nominees, the credibility of our succession planning process and recent changes to the Board and compensation program and the promise of our recent efforts to bolster growth and value creation to position Disney for the future.” The vote is set for April 3.
HBO Friday night show “Real Time with Bill Maher,” renewed through 2026 last week, will replay Saturdays on HBO’s WBD sib CNN starting March 23. The move “marks the start of a commitment and investment into topical entertainment programming that we’re bringing to the weekends,” said Amy Entelis, EVP, Talent, CNN Originals and Creative Development for CNN Worldwide.
Former CNN anchor Don Lemon posted an interview he did with Elon Musk that was to have been the debut of a new talk show in partnership with X; instead that deal was canceled by Musk after the interview took place. Things got contentious during the discussion, with Musk saying at one point, “I don’t have to answer questions from reporters. Don, the only reason I’m doing this interview is because you’re on the X platform and you asked for it. Otherwise, I would not do this interview.” While Musk had initially agreed to support the show, Lemon said in a statement last week, “His commitment to a global town square where all questions can be asked and all ideas can be shared seems not to include questions of him from people like me.”
Free TV Networks announced an expansion of broadcast distribution for The365 and Outlaw through new carriage agreements with TEGNA, Sunbeam, HC2 Broadcasting and other station groups. The365 is on track to reach 89% of all US television households by 2Q24, including 96% of African American households.

ESPN+ series “Full Court Press,” chronicling the ongoing journeys of senior Iowa guard Caitlin Clark, senior South Carolina center Kamilla Cardoso and sophomore UCLA guard Kiki Rice, premieres Saturday, May 11 and Sunday, May 12. The series has been embedded with the three players throughout this basketball season.
NBC’s summer programming – along with the Olympics – includes “Weakest Link,” airing new episodes beginning Tuesday, April 2 at 9p, and moving to Mondays starting May 20. “American Ninja Warrior” will air two specials, including a women’s championship on May 12 at 9p and a couples’ championship on May 27 at 8p. “America’s Got Talent” returns Tuesday, May 28 followed by new episodes of “Password.” Monday, June 3 brings a new season of “American Ninja Warrior” while “The Wall” returns to the schedule Monday, July 1.
“Star Wars” series “The Acolyte” lands Tuesday, June 4 on Disney+. The mystery-thriller is set in the final days of the High Republic era.

CNN’s “The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper” returns with “Justice Delayed: The Story of C.J. Rice” on Sunday, March 24 at 8p. The episode follows CNN anchor Jake Tapper’s efforts to shine a light on the story of CJ Rice, a Philadelphia man wrongfully convicted of attempted murder in 2013.
UK comedy “Hapless” premieres Wednesday, April 10 on Peacock. “I hope my particular brand of storytelling will appeal to our American cousins on the left, right and centre,” said creator Gary Sinyor. “Frankly, you could do with a laugh.”

Following up on an announcement made in November, YouTube introduced a new tool in Creator Studio requiring creators to disclose to viewers when realistic content is made with altered or synthetic media, including generative AI. Examples of content that require disclosure include using the likeness of a realistic person, altering footage of real events of places, and showing a realistic depiction of fictional major events, like a tornado moving toward a real town. However, “We won’t require creators to disclose if generative AI was used for productivity, like generating scripts, content ideas, or automatic captions,” said YouTube in a blog post. “We also won’t require creators to disclose when synthetic media is unrealistic and/or the changes are inconsequential.”

Kristen Cavallo is stepping down from her role as CEO of IPG’s MullenLowe, a position she took in 2022, to focus on political and societal causes. Cavallo will remain in an advisory capacity until 2025. “As I think about where I’ll direct my energies next, I’ve been wondering if many of our nation’s problems are ultimately marketing and communications problems,” said Cavallo. “How we connect with one another, how we unify, how we fulfill our promises.
