   IN THE NEWS

The NFL and Paramount Skydance are negotiating a costly renewal deal, reports CNBC. The agreement could have Paramount boost the average annual fee for CBS’ Sunday afternoon games by about 50% from the current $2.1 billion. While Paramount’s existing 11-year agreement runs through the 2033–34 season, the revised pact would scrap the opt-out clause that lets the league reopen talks after the 2029–30 season.

Pope Leo urged journalists to focus less on the spectacle of war and more on its human toll. On Monday, the pontiff told journalists on Italy’s channel Rai 2 that the media’s job is “to show the suffering that war always brings to populations, to show the face of war, and to tell it through the eyes of the victims so that it does not turn into a video game.”

The pope’s entreaty follows posts from President Trump about the media’s coverage of the war. On Sunday evening, Trump wrote, “Iran is being decimated, and the only battles they ‘win’ are those that they create through AI, and are distributed by Corrupt Media Outlets. The Radical Leftwing Press knows this full well, but continues to go forward with false stories and LIES.”

Jeff Shell, President of Paramount Skydance, is suing an advisor for extortion and defamation. The cross complaint alleges that R.J. Cipriani threatened to falsely accuse Shell of violating federal securities laws by disclosing details about Paramount’s media rights deal with the UFC. Cipriani sued Shell last week for reneging on a deal to pick up a reality show he’d created as payment for providing crisis communications services.
