The largest pay-TV operators, representing 96% of the market, lost 5.035 million video subscribers in 2023, according to Leichtman Research Group. Over the past five years, the companies have lost over 20 million. The top pay-TV providers now account for about 71.3 million subscribers, with the top seven cable companies serving about 34.1 million video subscribers; other traditional pay-TV services having 21 million subscribers; and the top Internet-delivered pay-TV services – including estimates for YouTube TV – having 16.2 million subscribers.

President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign has rolled out a six-week, $30 million TV and digital ad buy. The ads, targeting battleground states and Black and Latino-focused outlets, follows the president’s State of the Union speech on Thursday night, during which Biden repeatedly drew sharp contrasts with his Republican rival.

Nexstar Media Group is asking the Federal Communications Commission’s Media Bureau to cancel or reduce its $720,000 fine for Nextstar’s failure to negotiate in good faith with cable TV Hawaiian Telcom, which resulted in a three-week blackout last summer. In a filing, Nextstar said the bureau “seizes on its cursory, tenuous finding of a substantive good faith negotiation violation and proceeds to level an astounding $720,000 forfeiture.” If the “draconian” fine is not canceled, it should not exceed $7,500, said Nexstar.

Starz greenlit “Down in the Valley,” a docuseries inspired by the world of “P-Valley.” Set to air this year, six-half-hour episode series, hosted and executive produced by Nicco Annan (“P-Valley”), will take viewers on a tour of the Deep South.

Casting notes: Rosalind Eleazar (“Slow Horses”) will star in Netflix’s “Missing You,” adapted from the Harlan Coben novel about a detective who stumbles across her estranged fiancé on a dating app, forcing her to revisit the mystery surrounding her father’s murder….James Wolk (“Ordinary Joe”) landed a lead in Paramount+ drama “Happy Face,” starring Dennis Quaid and Annaleigh Ashford.

STREAMING

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

All four episodes of “Conan O’Brien Must Go On,” a new travel series based on the podcast “Conan O’Brien Needs a Fan,” will be available to stream Thursday, April 18 on Max. O’Brien surprises some of his most memorable fans in Norway, Thailand, Argentina, and Ireland while also taking in local culture.

Season five of “The Kardashians” launches Thursday, May 23 on Hulu. New episodes of the reality show will air weekly.

A new limited series on Turner Classic Movies will feature 12 nights of double features curated by celebrated filmmakers. Ben Mankiewicz hosts “Two for One beginning April 6, joined by the likes of Steven Spielberg, Patty Jenkins, and Spike Lee, who will offer commentary on the double feature’s cultural significance, its influence on other films, behind-the-scenes stories, and their own personal reflections.

Onyx Collective series “Black Twitter: A People’s History” premieres Thursday, May 9 on Hulu. Contributors to the three-parter from director Prentice Penny include W. Kamau Bell, Sam Jay, Amanda Seales and Baratunde Thurston, among others.

COMING UP

“American Masters” continues its series of Thought Leaders documentaries with the premiere of two new documentaries. “Moynihan,” which debuts Friday, March 29 at 9p on PBS (check local listings), is the first feature-length documentary to follow the life of former US Senator and diplomat Daniel Patrick Moynihan. “The Incomparable Mr. Buckley,” focused on William F. Buckley, Jr., makes its world premiere on PBS on Friday, April 5 at 9p (check local listings).

Ramy Youssef is taking his first turn as host on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” on March 30. Travis Scott is the musical guest.

President Biden’s 2024 State of the Union address drew 32.8 million viewers across 14 networks, up 18% from last year. Nielsen reports 74% of viewers were 55 and over, 19% were A35-54 and 5% were A18-34. Fox News’ coverage of the address and the Republican response was the highest-rated program in television in viewers for the third consecutive year, averaging 5.8 million viewers and 1.0141 million in the 25-54 demo. From 8-11p, FNC delivered nearly 5 million viewers and 874,000 among A25-54.

Week three of “Tournament of Champions” propelled Food Network to rank as the #2 non-news/sports cable network, posting a 0.97 P25-54/1.07 W25-54 Live+3 rating, up +14% vs. the first two weeks for both demos as well as up +67% and +55% vs. prior six-week benchmarks respectively. To date, the season has reached more than 8 million viewers.
