   IN THE NEWS

An estimated 36.6 million people watched President Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday, according to Nielsen. That’s up from 32.2 million who tuned in for President Biden’s address last year, and 26.9 million for Biden’s first post-election address. Trump’s first talk, in 2017, drew 47.7 million viewers.

Broken down by network, Fox News had an audience of 10.7 million viewers for the address, followed by ABC (6.3 million), CBS (4.0 million), NBC (3.9 million), Fox (2.7 million), MSNBC (1.9 million), and CNN (1.9 million).

Tom Llamas will take over as anchor of “NBC Nightly News” when Lester Holt steps down in early summer. “Tom has the winning combination of journalistic excellence, passionate storytelling and unyielding integrity — all characteristics that have long been trademarks of ‘NBC Nightly News,’” said NBC News EVP of Programming Janelle Rodriguez. “Additionally, he’s been instrumental in growing NBC News NOW into the leading streaming news network, helping to introduce NBC News to a new generation of viewers.” Llamas, who joined NBC News in 2021 from ABC News, where he was weekend anchor for “World News Tonight,” will continue as anchor of “Top Story.” Holt will remain at NBC News in a full-time position as an anchor on “Dateline.”

A+E Networks has a new name: A+E Global Media. “The name A+E Global Media reflects who we are today – an innovative, multiplatform content engine that reaches audiences everywhere,” said Paul Buccieri, President & Chairman. The Company’s Ad Sales team will now be known as A+E Media Solutions, whose “singular mission,” said Toby Byrne, President, A+E Media Solutions, is “to create relationships with our brand partners and craft innovative, multiplatform campaigns to meet their needs and grow their businesses.”

ABC News has been hit hardest by layoffs underway at The Walt Disney Co. that also include the company’s entertainment networks. Close to 200 employees, or nearly 6% of staff, are impacted. At ABC News, the teams from “Nightline” and “20/20” are being consolidated; all three hours of “Good Morning America” will now fall under the purview of Simone Swink; digital and social units are merging; and data and political polling site 538 is being shut down.

Sharing video content together is a key family bonding experience, third only to mealtime and travel, according to “The Connected Family: Screentime is Bonding Time,” a report commissioned by Wildbrain from Savanta. More findings include:
• 9 in 10 parents watch content together with their child on paid SVOD platforms.
• Younger parents see the greatest value in family viewing, with 71% of Gen Z parents and 61% of Millennial parents watching content with their kids at least once a day.
• Three-quarters of parents watch content with kids on YouTube, AVOD and FAST platforms, with YouTube being twice as popular as the next closest AVOD.
• Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu and Disney+ rank as the top paid SVOD platforms for family viewing.
• 88% of Gen Z and Millennial parents are likely to buy products or movie tickets seen in a video game played with their kids.
• Over 70% of parents have made purchases based on integrated brands seen when watching video content or gaming with their kids.

“Building off our research from last year, it’s striking to see in our new research just how important content-viewing and gaming time have become to families,” said Emma Witkowski, VP Media Solutions at WildBrain. “Screentime isn’t just for babysitting anymore – it has become an important bonding experience, and parents are just as engaged in what’s on the screen as their kids, presenting a unique opportunity for brands to engage audiences and generate interest.

YouTube has added a Premium Lite tier, allowing viewers to watch most videos ad-free, to its offerings for $7.99/month. But it’s not for everyone. “We’ve been testing Premium Lite to make sure we have the right balance of features and benefits for those viewers who want to watch most videos ad-free – whether it’s gaming, comedy, cooking or learning,” said the company in a blog post. The catch: “For users who want ad-free music on YouTube and YouTube Music, plus offline and background play, we recommend the Premium plan,” advises YouTube.

It’s a date: The 77th Emmy Awards have been set for Sunday, September 14 at 8p on CBS. Nominations will be announced July 15; host is TBD.

How will President Trump’s tariffs impact the advertising industry? A recent survey conducted by IAB of 100 advertising decision-makers reports that 94% are concerned about the impact of tariffs on ad spending. Of those, 57% are “extremely concerned” and 37% are “somewhat concerned.” Traditional media and social advertising are expected to see the largest budget reductions, while CTV and online video may be more resilient.

Key takeaway: “Due to the potential impact of the recently imposed tariffs, the 2025 ad market is expected to tighten, adding to overall economic uncertainty,” says the report. “This impact will likely be most noticeable mid-year, with the retail, consumer electronics, and media sectors seeing the largest reductions. Digital channels will continue to remain a priority for advertisers adapting to economic pressures.”

Forty-six percent of surveyed US viewers prefer to stream films at home, according to research platform MX8 Labs. Here’s why:
• Convenience was the top factor for streaming at home, cited by 78% of surveyed viewers. That share was higher for several specific demographics: People with a bachelor’s degree (85%), those who live in the Midwest (86%) and viewers aged 55-64 (90%).
• The lack of crowds and/or noisy people was cited by 70% of surveyed viewers. That rises to 81% of people over 65, and 87% for those living in the Western US.
• Cost savings ranked third, noted by 62% of all respondents
