Just 2.5% of media dollars invested by the largest media holding companies went to diverse-owned companies in 2023, a slight uptick from 2.2% in 2022, according to research by the Alliance for Inclusive and Multicultural Marketing (AIMM) and Media Framework and Guideline. Investments by those same companies going to diverse-owned and targeted media rose 1.4% in 2023, an increase over 2022, according to the study. “Today, diversity in the U.S. stands at more than 40% – and more than 50% when adding LGBTQ+ and People with Disabilities – yet our industry’s investment in media platforms owned by these segments is dismally nominal,” said AIMM co-founder Carlos Santiago. AIMM has set new goals for ad spending – raising diverse-owned media’s cut from 2.2% in 2022 to 6.5% by 2025 and diverse-owned and diverse-targeted media portion from 1.3% to 4.6%.

Paramount Global narrowed losses in its streaming business in Q4, but its traditional linear TV business saw continued declines. Overall revenue was down 6%, as last year’s Hollywood strikes pressured film and TV units. But the company’s Paramount+ streaming service added 4.1 million subscribers in the period, ending with 67.5 million customers, improving its losses to $490 million from $575 million in the prior year. Ad revenue at Paramount’s TV networks fell 15% in the period, with affiliate fees down 1% and licensing off by 25%. Film revenue dipped 31% during the period.

Stand-up star and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” regular Richard Lewis died Wednesday. He was 76. Lewis, who announced last April that he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and was retiring from comedy, died of a heart attack, said his publicist.

The first season of Taylor Sheridan’s “Tulsa King” is scheduled to make its debut on CBS this summer, ahead of its second season on Paramount+. This is the second time Paramount has moved a Sheridan-penned series to the broadcaster – its airing of Paramount Network’s “Yellowstone” attracted 6.6 million viewers in its first episode.

Fuse Media has reached an agreement to exclusively sell advertising inventory on behalf of film and television studio Lionsgate for FAST channels including EBONY TV by Lionsgate, MovieSphere by Lionsgate, HerSphere by Lionsgate and OuterSphere by Lionsgate. The partnership also gives Fuse Media access to Tastemade’s inventory across Tastemade, Tastemade Travel, Tastemade Home, and Tastemade en Español. Tastemade’s in-house sales team will continue to sell their inventory directly.

Fox Corp’s FAST channel Tubi is getting a new logo with more vibrant colors and branding that plays on the “rabbit hole” concept first introduced during its 2023 Super Bowl ads. “Our viewership growth is strongest with young, multicultural audiences and they love Tubi for the rabbit holes, the nostalgia and the content they can’t get anywhere else,” Tubi CMS Nicole Parlapiano said in a statement. “In this new brand system, we wanted to give them a fun, bold and engaging platform, that remains frictionless and 100% free, to indulge in the content that reflects their passions. Impact Network is making moves to better address the Black community, including a rebranding effort and new programming that better reflects its mission to inspire, improve, and impact audiences in positive ways. New programming will include movies like “Betty & Coretta”; original programming including films, series and sitcoms; and new initiatives focused on themes such a Women’s Celebration Month, Impact Health Month Black Music Month, Juneteenth, and Black Business Month.

Advertising CPMs were down 23% in Q4 2023, the smallest decline since Q2 2023, according to AdRoll’s “State of Digital Marketing Report.” Easing the blow was an unexpected 7% uptick in December, which AdRoll saw as signaling heightened advertiser confidence and campaign effectiveness as the year closed. That momentum is expected to continue this year – AdRoll’s January customer survey indicated that 2024 ad spend could be on the rise, with 40% of marketers planning to increase their budgets and 30% planning to maintain budgets similar to 2023.

When Kenough isn’t enough? An A-list of artists will perform their nominees for Best Original Song at the Oscars on March 10, including actor Ryan Gosling and songwriter Mark Ronson singing “I’m Just Ken,” from the “Barbie” soundtrack. Other performers include Jon Batiste (“It Never Went Away” from “American Symphony”); Becky G (“The Fire Inside” from “Flamin’ Hot”); Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell (“What Was I Made For?” from “Barbie”); and Scott George and the Osage Singers (Wahzhazhe: A Song For My People” from “Killers of the Flower Moon”). Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the 96th Oscars will air live on ABC, beginning at 7p.

Paramount+, Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios said that Guy Ritchie will direct and executive produce a new series – “The Donovans” – loosely based on Showtime hit “Ray Donovan.” The series will be written by Ronan Bennett and will debut on Paramount+ in Canada later this year.

Reality star and Skinnygirl founder Bethenny Frankel will make her debut on the scripted side of entertainment after being cast in Lifetime new original movie “Danger in the Dorm.” The movie, currently in production, will debut in the summer as part of Lifetime’s “Ripped from the Headlines” movie slate.

ITV has commissioned a new 10-part series from Penny Lane Entertainment, “Alan Titchmarsh’s Gardening Club,” where host Alan Titchmarsh and a team of experts highlight the latest horticultural trends and innovative gardens across the UK. Produced by Sam Bendel and executive producer Lee Connolly, the show was commissioned for ITV by Katie Rawcliffe and Leanne Clarke and is made in association with lawn treatment company GreenThumb.

COMING UP

Helen Hunt, Christina Hendricks, Christopher Lloyd, Dan Bucatinsky, George Wallace, and Tony Goldwyn are onboard as guest stars for season three of Max series “Hacks,” debuting in the spring.

“Armenia, My Home,” on PBS this week, celebrates the modern-day Armenian Republic and its people, and explores the nearly 3,000-year-old past of the world’s first Christian nation. What can viewers look forward to – and why is an “Only Murders in the Building” star narrating the doc? Filmmaker Andrew Goldberg tells all, in Cynsiders.

Apple TV+ will premiere documentary “The Bloody Hundredth,” on March 15, chronicling the stories of several characters and airmen of the 100th Bomb Group portrayed in its “Masters of the Air” series. Narrated by Tom Hanks, the hour-long documentary is executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Hanks and Gary Goetzman.

Season 5 of MeTV original series, “Collector’s Call” will premiere on April 7 at 6:30p.

Season 3 of PBS cooking competition series “The Great American Recipe” will premiere June 17 with eight new home cooks, two new judges and one new location. Los Angeles restaurateur Tim Hollingsworth and Francis Lam, host of public radio’s “The Splendid Table,” are new judges for season 3, joining returning host Alejandra Ramos and judge Tiffany Derry at a new filming location in Nashville, Tennessee.

STREAMING

Short-form video clips from “Saturday Night Live,” “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” and “Late Night with Seth Meyers” are now available on The Roku Channel and will appear regularly after airing on NBC. Clips from NBC Sports will be launching in the coming weeks.

TECH TALK

A new study by Yahoo and Publicis Media shows that transparency will go a long way towards closing the gap between consumers and advertisers when it comes to AI. The study – “Trust Through Transparency: The Future of AI and Advertising” – polled more than 1,200 consumers and over 350 U.S. advertisers, finding that while 77% of advertisers view AI positively, only 38% of consumers share the sentiment. But brands can build trust through transparency – the study showed that AI-generated ads with noticed disclosures increased brand perceptions and caused a 47% lift in ad appeal, a 73% rise in ad trustworthiness, and a 96% increase in overall trust for the company.

Ad-tech company Locality has entered into a local video advertising partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery, giving it access to the media giant’s portfolio of brands and platforms through 2024, including TNT Sports, CNN, Max and discovery+.

North Carolina-based independent agency Baldwin& has partnered with PBS documentary series “Reel South” to lead brand positioning, brand ID and creative development for the series’ 10th season and digital launch on YouTube.

DoubleVerify said its partnership with Roku helped it identify and mitigate what it called one of the most malicious CTV ad fraud schemes ever, CycloneBot. In a company report, DoubleVerify said CycloneBot is capable of generating up to 250 million falsified ad requests and spoofing approximately 1.5 million devices daily, costing as much as $7.5 million across unprotected advertisers. DoubleVerify’s Fraud Lab teamed up with Roku, using the latter’s Advertising Watermark to validate and confirm spoofing activities by CycloneBot. Roku confirmed it was not impacted by the CycloneBot scheme and no resulting fraudulent ad impressions were sold or purchased from Roku.

SPORTS UPDATE

Allen Media Group’s free-streaming platform Sports.tv has added American 7s Football League games and programming to its video on demand lineup. Sports.tv is available on Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, and Android and IOS mobile devices.

DC-area regional sports network Monumental Sports Network will broadcast 13 Old Glory DC rugby games during the 2024 Major League Rugby Season, beginning with the team’s season opener against New Orleans (NOLA) Gold on March 2. Fans can watch the games through their Pay TV subscription on linear tv, on monumentalsportsnetwork.com, or by downloading the Monumental streaming app on iOS, Android, Apple TV, Roku, and Amazon Fire TV and using an eligible TV Everywhere log-in.

Martial arts organization ONE Championship’s “ONE 166: Qatar” will take place March 1 in Lusail Sports Arena, with undefeated ONE Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight MMA World Champion Anatoly Malykhin challenging ONE Middleweight MMA World Champion Reinier de Ridder. The event will be broadcast in 190 countries and air exclusively on beIN Sports in the MENA region.

Streaming platform FloSports has reached a five-year media rights agreement to become the exclusive media partner of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) beginning in the 2024-2025 academic year. FloSports will distribute more than 1,100 regular season and postseason NEWMAC events live and on-demand across 17 sports, with member institutions having the option to post full games free of charge on their website 72 hours after each contest. FloSports will also produce original content and social media programming throughout the conference over the five-year term.

GOING GLOBAL

The Walt Disney Co. has merged its Star India TV and streaming business with Reliance Industries’ Viacom18 in a deal valued at $8.5 billion. Reliance will own 16.5% of the new entity, Viacom 18 will have 46.8% and Disney 36.8%. The transaction, which combines competing streaming platforms, India’s leading pay TV service and more than 100 linear TV channels, is said to reshape the Indian media and entertainment landscape, capturing 40% market share.

Banjay has started a new international co-production set in Queenstown, New Zealand – “A Remarkable Place to Die” – created by Screentime New Zealand and co-produced with Real Film Berlin in association with Banijay Rights. It will air across Germany, the US, and New Zealand with commissioning broadcasters ZDF, Acorn TV, and TVNZ and will be distributed globally by Banijay Rights.

ITV Studios will launch business reality format “Side Hustlers” to the international market. Produced by Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine, part of Candle Media, the series sits alongside several new shows ITV will present at its ITV Studios Format Festival – part of the fourth annual London TV Screenings. Others in the slate include realty series Scared of the Dark,” and reality programs “A Party To Die For;” “Double The Money;” “Don’t Look Down;” “Best Kept Secrets;” “Say Whut?!;” and “Ultimate Christmas Star.”

Fremantle has secured worldwide distribution rights, outside of German speaking territories, to new fantasy drama, “Hagen,” from Constantin Film. RTL group holds German streaming and free TV rights. Based on Wolfgang Hohlbein’s bestselling novel “Hagen von Tronje,” the series is a reimagining of the medieval Nibelungen folk saga, widely considered the inspiration behind modern fantasies such as “Game of Thrones” and J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of The Rings.”

European FAST channel provider WeDo TV has launched its service on several new platforms. “WeDo Big Stories” (outdoor survival, nature) will launch on Intelsat’s Galaxy 19 satellite, Sling Freestream, and Allen Media Group’s Local Now, while newly created “WeDo Amor” (telenovelas) will launch on Sling Freestream in March. In addition, AVOD platform WeDo TV is now available on Comcast Xfinity set-top boxes, and in all major app stores in the US.

TV Globo said it has reached agreements with Teledoce and TCS for two series – “Land of Desire” and “Perfect Love” – in Uruguay and El Salvador, respectively. In Uruguay, the telenovelas premiere in the first half of 2024. TCS is Globo’s exclusive partner in El Salvador and premiered “Perfect Love” this month. “Land of Desire” is scheduled for release in May 2024.

Toronto-based Guru Studio has optioned the animated TV rights to popular children’s book series “Spot,” published by Puffin, part of Penguin Random House Children’s UK. The new TV series will follow Spot, and like the book series, children will see their own everyday experiences reflected in Spot’s adventures with his family and friends. Since first being published in 1980, the book series has sold more than 65 million copies worldwide.

In Los Angeles Spectrum News 1 was the most-watched news network during continuous heavy rains in Southern California on February 4, while in New York, Spectrum News NY1 was the most-watched news network on February 13 during snowstorm and election day coverage, with a 21% increase in viewership.
