Paramount Global held early discussions with Comcast about a forming some kind of streaming partnership, reports The Wall Street Journal. Possibilities could include a joint venture with Paramount+ and Peacock. The challenging streaming economy is making unexpected bedfellows – word of the preliminary talks follows the surprise announcement that ESPN, Fox Corp. and Warner Bros. Discovery are forming a sports streaming joint venture.

Nickelodeon’s learning platform for pre-schoolers, Noggin, is shutting down later this year. The team that runs the subscription service was let go as part of Paramount Global’s layoffs last week.

NBCUniversal’s digital movie service Vudu is being renamed Fandango at Home “in a few weeks,” according to an email sent to customers. “Fandango remains committed to super-serving fans with all their entertainment needs, and we are excited about the opportunities this rebranding brings to deliver a seamless and enjoyable service to our users,” said NBCU’s Cameron Douglas, SVP of OTT/Video Content Streaming, in a statement. Vudu launched with an internet set-top box in 2007, was acquired by Walmart in 2010, and purchased by NBCU-owned Fandango in 2020.

Roku revenue beat analysts’ forecasts for 4Q23, hitting $984.4 million, up 14%, with a net loss of $78.3 million, down from $237.1 million the year prior. Roku reported it has over 80 million active accounts, an increase of 10 million for 2023. But the company expects about $370 million in total gross profit for the first quarter, below the $373.4 million expected by analysts. In a letter to shareholders, Roku said, “We remain mindful of near-term challenges in the macro environment and an uneven ad market recovery. While we will face difficult [year over year] growth rate comparisons in streaming services distribution and a challenging M&E environment for the rest of the year, we expect to maintain our Q4 2023 YoY Platform growth rates in Q1.” Shares of Roku dropped 23% on Friday.

ABC warhorse “Grey’s Anatomy” won the People’s Choice Award for TV Show of the Year on Sunday. Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” took the trophy for Comedy, and HBO’s “The Last of Us” won for Drama, while Hulu’s “The Kardashians” copped the prize for Reality Show and NBC’s “The Voice” was named Competition Show of the Year.

Television Series winners of the Make-up Artists & Hair Stylists Awards include Netflix’s “The Crown” and “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story,” HBO’s “The Last of Us,” Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show,” and ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.”

Kate Snow, co-anchor of weekday program “NBC News Daily,” is stepping down from her role as anchor of Sunday’s edition of “NBC Nightly News.” Said Janelle Rodriguez, EVP of Programming for NBC News, in a memo to staff, “Kate has been a major force behind ‘NBC News Daily’s’ early success, and we’re fortunate she’s now able to fully devote herself to the show.”

Irony alert: George Santos, expelled from the House of Representatives last year after being charged with multiple counts of fraud, is suing Jimmy Kimmel, ABC and Disney. The disgraced former lawmaker has accused Kimmel of deceiving him into making videos on the Cameo app that were used to ridicule Santos on Kimmel’s late-night show. Santos is seeking $750,000 for the five videos he created that were played, along with damages to be determined at trial.

Les Moonves, former CEO of CBS, has been fined $11,250 by the Los Angeles City Ethics Commission for influencing an LAPD officer to keep accusations of sexual assault out of the press. The now-retired officer, Cory Palka, gave Moonves and other CBS executives advance warning about the investigation, and shared details of the accuser’s report. Those efforts failed – Moonves got the boot in 2018, and along with Paramount Global had to pay CBS shareholders to settle misconduct claims.

Prime Video greenlit a documentary following Roger Federer during the final 12 days of his professional tennis career. The film, which started out as a home video, is directed by Asif Kapadia (“Amy”). “Initially, the idea was to capture the final moments of my professional tennis career so that I could have it later on to show my family and friends,” said Federer. “During my career, I tended to shy away from having cameras around me and my family, especially during important moments. But I didn’t see the harm in shooting this as it was never intended for the public. However, we captured so many powerful moments, and it transformed into a deeply personal journey. I am happy to be partnering with Prime Video because of their vast global reach and significant presence in the film industry.” The doc is a Lafcadia Productions production, produced by Lafcadia principal Kapadia and George Chignell.

“Berlin,” the spin-off of Netflix hit “Money Heist,” has been renewed for a second season. “Berlin” was the streamer’s most-watched series globally during premiere week last year.

RedBird IMI struck a deal to acquire All3Media (“Traitors”) from Warner Bros. Discovery and Liberty Global for $1.45 billion. “All3Media is one of the world’s great content companies, and this gives us an incredible platform to continue to grow our expanding portfolio,” said RedBird’s Jeff Zucker. “The demand for new shows and ongoing existing series, both scripted and unscripted, makes All3 a perfect fit for us.” The deal will close in the second or third quarter, subject to regulatory approval; Alll3Media CEO Jane Thurton and COO Sara Greater will continue at the helm.

Casting notes: Dennis Quaid will play a serial killer in Paramount+ drama “Happy Face,” opposite Annaleigh Ashford. Inspired by the true story of a murderer who left smiley faces on evidence, the series is produced by CBS Studios in association with King Size Productions, iHeartPodcasts and Semi-Formal Productions….Jaime Camil (“Jane the Virgin”) has joined the season two cast of NBC’s “Lopez vs Lopez” in a recurring role.

HBO documentary trilogy “God Save Texas” explores one of the most controversial states in the union. Inspired by the book God Save Texas: A Journey into the Soul of the Lone Star State by Lawrence Wright, the trilogy kicks off Tuesday, February 27 at 9p.

On the new season of Discovery’sGold Rush White Water,” premiering Friday, March 8 a 8p, Dustin Hurt is forced to streamline his crew and come up with a new plan of attack for the deadly creek that nearly destroyed him.

COMING UP

“POV” has acquired feature documentary “Who I am Not,” revealing the diversity of experiences in the intersex community and the struggle to achieve body autonomy. The doc will make its broadcast premiere on PBS as part of season 37 of “POV” this summer.

STREAMING

TCLtv+, the streaming service offered by consumer electronics company, TCL, announced a new content deal with FOX that brings FOX Weather to the slate of FOX programming recently added to the TCLtv+ streaming app. Content is currently available on TCL Google TV and coming to other TCL Connected TVs in the US.

The Design Network, a lifestyle network featuring home and design programming, is now available on DirecTV. TDN was founded a decade ago by Jason Harris, the co-owner of home furnishings retailer, Furnitureland South.

What’s the media value of brands appearing on camera during the Super Bowl? Relo Metrics used its AI/computer vision analysis platform to look at brand visibility inside and outside the stadium. Some takeaways include:
· Nike’s jersey partnership accounted for 60% of sponsored exposures during Super Bowl LVIII.
· State Farm’s Halftime Report netted the brand $16 million in media value.
· Allegiant branding on the stadium (part of their regular season naming rights deal with the Las Vegas Raiders) generated $7.3 million, and 81% of value for Allegiant was generated through interior signage that was often clearly exposed before kickoffs, during punts and after touchdowns.
· Las Vegas hotels received $4.1 million in media value from aerial shots during the Super Bowl.
· Verizon’s takeover of the Las Vegas Sphere during the broadcast generated $2.5 million in media value in one exposure for the brand.
· The full media value potential of Chiefs-owned social accounts during Super Bowl weekend was $10.6 million, which increased by $3.5 million from last season.

ESPN, Disney Branded Television and the NHL are teaming up for the second “NHL Big City Greens Classic,” a live, animated NHL game telecast featuring the Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Boston Bruins on March 9 at 3p. The alternate presentation of the game will feature real-time virtually recreated animation of NHL players and teams modeled after characters on Disney Channel’s hit animated series “Big City Greens.” ESPN+, Disney Channel, Disney XD and Disney+ will present animated telecast, while the traditional telecast will be available on ABC and ESPN+.

Boxing event “Knockout Chaos” will be broadcast live on DAZN worldwide on Friday, March 8, as well as via Sky Box Office in the UK. Former unified World Heavyweight Champion Anthony Joshua will take on MMA star and new Heavyweight contender Francis Ngannou at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh.
