   IN THE NEWS

Paramount Skydance is pressing ahead with its bid to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, filing a lawsuit to force WBD to disclose details of its $82.7 billion agreement with Netflix, which Paramount argues is inferior to its own $108.4 billion offer. “WBD’s stockholders have an immediate need for the material information being withheld in order to make a decision on Paramount’s tender offer to them,” reads the legal filing. “This additional material information, including information that the Board purports to rely on but has withheld from view, will confirm what many already know: WBD stockholders should reject the recommendation of the Board and accept Paramount’s value maximizing tender offer for their shares.” Paramount also plans to nominate a slate of directors at WBD’s next annual shareholder meeting who would be more receptive to Paramount’s proposal.

Warner Bros. Discovery had a few things to say about that. “Despite six weeks and just as many press releases from Paramount Skydance, it has yet to raise the price or address the numerous and obvious deficiencies of its offer,” responded WBD in a statement. “Instead, Paramount Skydance is seeking to distract with a meritless lawsuit and attacks on a board that has delivered an unprecedented amount of shareholder value. In spite of its multiple opportunities, Paramount Skydance continues to propose a transaction that our board unanimously concluded is not superior to the merger agreement with Netflix.”

Apple TV set a new monthly record in December for engagement and viewership, wrote Apple SVP of Services Eddie Cue in a Monday note. Without getting into specifics, Cue said the number of total hours viewed on the streamer was up 36% versus the year prior. Other highlights: The App Store saw over 850 million average weekly users globally, and Apple Pay eliminated over $1 billion in fraud, while generating more than $100 billion in incremental merchant sales globally.

Global streaming service spend on content will hit a record $101 billion in 2026, according to a report from Ampere Analysis, up 2% from 2025. “The accelerating shift in content investment toward streaming underscores a structural rebalancing of the global TV market, with scale and reach emerging as the central competitive differentiators for operators to remain buoyant,” said Peter Ingram, Research Manager, Ampere Analysis.

Nominees for the 57th Annual NAACP Image Awards were unveiled on Monday. “Bel-Air” landed the most TV nods with seven, followed by six for ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” Hulu’s “Reasonable Doubt” and Netflix film “Ruth & Boaz.” The ceremony airs live Saturday, February 28 on BET and CBS.

Pluto TV will stream a free marathon of the first 49 seasons of “Survivor” and make episodes available on demand via a dedicated Survivor channel beginning Saturday, January 24, at 5:15p. The long-running CBS reality series returns for its landmark 50th season on Wednesday, February 25.

Fans will have to wait a little longer for the returns of “NCIS,” “NCIS: Origins” and “NCIS: Sydney.” The procedurals were slated to resume their seasons on Tuesday, February 24, but have been bumped by a week to clear space for the State of the Union address.
