It’s almost too late to score advertising for the College Football Playoffs on ESPN – with multi-year viewership highs for college football, Disney reports ad inventory is almost sold out. Michigan faces off with Washington on January 8 for the championship.

A live town hall with former president Donald Trump will air on FOX News Channel on January 10 from 9-10p – the same night as CNN’s GOP debate. Airing from Des Moines, Iowa ahead of the state’s January 15 Republican Caucuses, the event will be moderated by Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum.

Omnicom has closed its $900 million acquisition of Flywheel Digital from Ascential. “Joining the Omnicom network takes our organization to the next level,” said former Ascential CEO Duncan Painter, who will head the operation as a new practice area within Omnicom. “We can scale faster, leverage relationships, and combine data and technology efforts.”

Apple TV+ has ordered season five of “Slow Horses.” Season three of the spy drama, starring Gary Oldman as the head of an office of MI5 rejects, premiered in November; season four is expected to be released by the end of 2024.

The merger of Dish Network and EchoStar closed December 31, and on the first day of trading after the deal, shares in EchoStar dipped 5%. Charlie Ergen, who had been Co-Founder and Chairman of both companies, is now Executive Chairman of the new firm. The deal offers debt-laden Dish, spun off by EchoStar in 2008, access to more cash and an opportunity to expand its wireless services. “The completion of this merger marks an important milestone for our company and our customers, launching a new era of connectivity,” stated Ergen. “In a world that is increasingly wireless, we are well-positioned to drive revenue and profitable growth.”

FETV’s signal has gone dark in Chicago. “This is industry dysfunction playing out in real time,” said FETV President and CEO Drew Sumrall. “A few large companies have created an ecosystem full of walled gardens with little to no competition, and then they complain about skyrocketing network fees and retrans costs to the FCC—all while raising prices for the consumer…As of today FETV is not seeking a license fee from Comcast.” FETV became available on Comcast in 2022, boosting its distribution to over 50 million subscribers.

ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” landed five nominations for the Make-Up Artists & Hairstylists Guild’s MUAHS Awards, followed by three for Prime Video’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” Winners will be announced at a ceremony on February 18.

How do you explain the momentum of DOOH right now?
The momentum of DOOH is as simple as the first letter in DOOH – Digital. The world’s original medium is now taking from the digital playbook, adopting every innovation, from AR and VR to programmatic, 3D, QR Codes and social amplification. Location has always been central to OOH, but now we are seeing advertisers reaching targeted impressions using data and dynamic ad serving across myriad means of time, weather, news and audiences in front of ads in very addressable fashion. DOOH also enables brands to reach customers throughout their entire daily journey, from path to purchase to point of purchase – as retail media is an integral part of our work. On top of that, at a tenuous time for other digital outlets, DOOH is very brand safe – as we often say, you can’t hide in the sunlight.

What’s ahead for Netflix? Brad Altfest, Managing Director of Media and Entertainment, Agora, weighs in:
“2023 marked the one-year anniversary of Netflix launching its ‘Basic With Ads’ tier, and its success (15 million monthly users!) offers plenty of opportunities to capitalize on an audience willing to see ads in exchange for lower subscription fees. In the year ahead, we expect to see Netflix continue to expand its reach, going beyond free ad-supported TV to unlock new revenue opportunities. This could include live shopping/auctions, the gamification of content, AI-assisted shopping using chatbots and targeted message campaigns, and more. Netflix has the bandwidth to offer premium options that maximize interactivity and increase the average impression length to increase the advertising surface area, and 2024 we can see them take advantage of it.”

Mark Jung, VP of Product, Dstillery, offers his perspective on life after the cookie crumbles.
“Momentum is starting on the programmatic side with more DSPs like The Trade Desk and others going all in on CTV; with programmatic-like hands-on keyboard capabilities power, advertisers will be able to leverage their programmatic experience and planning to get the most of their CTV buys — especially as the targeting landscape changes post-cookie and more budgets start flowing into CTV.”

The NHL, National Hockey League Players’ Association and SAP are again recognizing the value of teachers with the Future Goals Most Valuable Teacher program presented by SAP. In its fifth year and in strategic partnership with EVERFI from Blackbaud, the program will recognize 60 teachers across North America, who have used the Future Goals Hockey Scholar program.

ABC’s “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest” was indeed rockin’. The first primetime segment of was up by 35% in Total Viewers (7.0 million vs. 5.2 million) and by 33% among A18-49 (1.81 rating vs. 1.36 rating) to score 3-year highs, a feat also achieved by Part 2, which jumped 30% over the prior year in Total Viewers (10.4 million vs. 8.0 million) and by 32% among A18-49 (2.93 rating vs. 2.22 rating).

ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” delivered 25.7 million viewers, according to Nielsen fast nationals, becoming one of the three most-watched “MNF” games since 1997.
