NBC has pulled The Michael J. Fox Show off its schedule. The comedy, which earned a .7 rating/2 share and 2.2 million total viewers on January 23, will be replaced by Hollywood Game Night starting February 27, after the Olympics. Seven eps already shot have yet to air. But Fox isn’t out of a job – he’s returning to CBS‘s The Good Wife, where he earned three Emmy nominations guest starring as attorney Louis Canning.
Former Clinton aide James Carville has joined Fox News Channel as a contributor. “James’ successful and storied career in politics over several decades is an enormous asset,” said the net’s VP of programming Bill Shine. Carville and wife Mary Matalin left CNN shortly after Jeff Zucker took charge early last year.
ABC issued its third straight-to-series order this season, to Astronaut Wives Club. The ABC Studios drama is based on the book by Lily Koppel about real-life NASA spouses. Secrets & Lies and a project from David O. Russell and Susannah Grant also got to skip the pilot process.
MTV released Miley Cyrus: MTV Unplugged & Uncensored through its digital and mobile platforms, and the MTV App and MTV Artists App, the first time the net has released an uncensored version of its Unplugged series. The premiere of Miley Cyrus: MTV Unplugged on January 29 averaged one million total viewers and set a new digital record for the franchise, with more than 1.7 million streams in the first 24 hours.
21st Century Fox’s fiscal second quarter dropped 12%, reported execs in a conference call Thursday, due in part to lower-than-anticipated ratings for Fox network shows like The X Factor and American Idol, and investments in cable launches FXX and Fox Sports 1. President and COO Chase Carey labeled the issue “short term,” thanks in part to the net’s plan to take a pass on costly pilot season and launch content year-round.
They may not be airing the Games, but ABC News has the Olympics covered. Correspondents reporting from Sochi and Moscow will report on events, athletes and breaking news, announced the net, and along with producers, stay active on social media to share updates and results. The social media desk will be “staffed 24 hours a day,” promised the news division.
A year after its launch, CNN is giving up on brand extension CNN Latino, eight hours of Spanish language syndicated daily programming. The effort “was not able to fulfill our business expectations,” explained a CNN spokesperson.
Amazon launched 10 new pilots on Prime Instant Video Thursday. Viewer feedback will help determine which shows make it to series; last year three were picked up. View the entrants here.
Science Channel launched a site for “mind-blowing” curated science content (sample: a penguin colony filmed by another bird; vintage footage of LSD testing). Available on all platforms, Sci2 features short-form videos and live feeds.
Nat Geo‘s Ultimate Survival: Alaska is calling all intrepid adventurers. Applications for a spot on the next season of the show (the goal: “make it out alive”) are available for download here. Meanwhile, season two continues through March 9 at its new time, Sundays at 10p.

TLC ordered 35 more episodes of Sex Sent Me to the ER, featuring real-life stories of romance gone wrong. Over its first four episodes, the series averaged 1.9 million P2+ viewers and was the number one premiere among ad-supported cable on Saturday night in all key women demos. CBS ordered a pilot focusing on the world of Wall Street, with actor John Cusack on the exec producer team, and a medical drama about former reality stars, both from CBS Television Studios.
AMC and Sony Pictures Television are teaming to develop Preacher, based on the 90s comic books, as a drama series. Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg (This Is the End) will write and exec produce. “This is amazing! We’ve tried for seven years to work on Preacher and we’re so psyched AMC is finally letting us,” said Rogan and Goldberg. “It is our favorite comic of all time, and we’re going to do everything we can to do it right. Humperdoo!”
