Good morning. It’s Thursday, February 6, 2014, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Tonight’s Premiere:
World: Super Skyscrapers at 8p

Tonight’s Finales:
Bravo: Toned Up at 10:30p
Great American Country: Farm Kings at 9p

USA‘s Psych will not return after season eight wraps, announced net president Chris McCumber. But is it really over for the quirky dramedy, which averaged 4.2 million viewers last year? “While the series will wrap in March, somehow I don’t believe we’ve heard the last of Shawn and Gus,” teased McCumber. Finale airs Wednesday, March 26 at 9p, followed by a Q&A aftershow with the cast.

 IN THE NEWS

In an earnings call Wednesday, Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes acknowledged that while Netflix has more U.S. subscribers than HBO – 29.9 million to 28.5 million – that’s without throwing sister net Cinemax in the mix. That would add up to 43 million domestic subscribers, and 130 million overseas (Netflix has 44 million subscribers globally). Bewkes also pointed out HBO makes more money – $1.79 billion in operating income versus Netflix’s $228.3 million in 2013, and has added 2 million subs in 2013, the most in 17 years.

David Letterman had a chat with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr for CBS’s The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute to the Beatles, airing Sunday, February 9 at 8p. Letterman conducted the interview in his Late Show home, the Ed Sullivan Theater, site of the Fab Four’s legendary performance in 1964.

NBC News introduced a major redesign of its web site, NBCNews.com, with an increased emphasis on original digital-first storytelling – just in time for the Olympics. “The new site doesn’t feel like TV content chopped up for the web – it is actually born of a seamless collaboration between TV and digital,” said Deborah Turness, president of NBC News. “We’ve already begun the stages of tearing down the walls that traditionally have divided the two operations, and this new stream that we’re launching is the foundation stone of our future division strategy.”

CBS came out the winner in a bid for eight Thursday night NFL games. The matchups will be simulcast on NFL Network, which hopes to use CBS’s muscle to expand the audience for the games. “NFL Network built Thursday into a night for NFL fans,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. “Our goal is to bring these games to more fans on broadcast television with unprecedented promotion and visibility.” Bonus: around $800 million in added revenue.

On the eve of the Olympics, streamer-of-broadcast-TV Aereo has been forced to turn away customers in two cities. Last week the service said it was out of capacity in New York and could accept no more subscribers; now reports say the same is true in Atlanta. The company has not specified the nature of its capacity issue but on Monday, announced a February 19 launch date for San Antonio.

A Nielsen TV Brand Effect study reports that “memorability” of Super Bowl ads improved versus last year, with some brands doing a particularly good job of hitting their mark. Based on memorability, likability and a new metric, Twitter TV reach, the research company ranked the following commercials as most memorable: Budweiser (“Hero’s Welcome”), Doritos (“Cowboy Kid”), Budweiser (“Puppy Love”), RadioShack (“The Phone Call”) and Cheerios (“Gracie”).

CNN senior White House correspondent Brianna Kellar has been named the net’s senior political correspondent. Effective next month, Kellar will be the lead reporter covering the Democratic field of 2016 Presidential hopefuls.

Seventeen is partnering with Awesomeness TV to debut its new multichannel network, Seventeen MCN, providing a platform for teen girls to produce and share their own channels. Five of the generation’s online stars will host shows, bringing along their YouTube fan followings.

NUVOtv will hold its 2014 upfront in New York the evening of Monday, May 12. The venue will be announced at a later date.

People may call on St. Valentine in the name of love, but he’s also called on for problems with beekeeping and fainting. Not to mention the plague. History.com offers a unique spin on the patron saint of romance with “6 Surprising Facts About St. Valentine.”

Tour operator Collette signed on as a sponsor for PBS‘s Antiques Roadshow, the net’s most-watched ongoing primetime series. “It’s a great match,” said Suzanne Zellner, vice president of corporate sponsorship for The Sponsorship Group for Public Television. “Roadshow viewers have a passion for travel.” The tour company joins sponsors Liberty Mutual and Subaru.

 COMING UP

Discovery has another stunt up its sleeve. Following its record-breaking telecast of Nik Wallenda walking across the Grand Canyon on a tightrope last summer (8.5 million average viewers, a live event high for the net), Discovery is planning live broadcast Everest Jump Live for May 2014, with wingsuit jumper Joby Ogwyn making the leap down the summit of Mount Everest. Two one-hour pre-shows will document Joby’s training and prep.

Summer Dreams, following players at the NBA’s official Summer League, documents the grueling 10-day event where athletes pursue their hoop dreams. The two-hour special from Raquel Productions with Mandalay Sports Media airs Saturday, March 15 at 8p on CBS.

History and H2 are in post-production for event series World Wars. The six-parter, focusing on three decades of war from 1914-1945, will premiere in 2014 in the U.S. and internationally.

The fourth installment of Investigation Discovery‘s Black History Month anthology, The Injustice Files, exposes an ugly chapter of U.S. history: “sundown towns,” all-white communities that excluded African Americans from even visiting after sunset. Do they still exist? The Al Roker Entertainment looks for answers on Monday, February 24 at 8p.

UP original movie Far From Home, starring Barry Watson (7th Heaven), premieres Sunday, February 9 at 7p. The Front Street Pictures production tells the story of a prodigal son’s return to the San Juan, WA islands.

Joe Rogan is back on Comedy Central for Joe Rogan: Live From the Tabernacle. The stand-up comedian and UFC commentator discusses marriage, plastic surgery and the existence of the universe on Friday, February 28 at midnight.

During Black History Month, Bio.com is featuring never-before-seen interviews with key Civil Rights movement leaders. American Freedom Stories: Alabama Civil Rights includes over 25 original short form videos that capture personal stories, including foot soldiers in the 1963 Children’s Crusade.

Syfy is helping viewers catch up on eps of freshman thriller Helix with a marathon of the first five shows tonight, February 6, starting at 6p. Friday, February 7, a new episode airs in its regular 10p timeslot.

 RETURNING SERIES

Naked and Afraid comes back to Discovery Sunday, March 16 at 9p, with survivalist strangers stranded together with one personal item… and nothing else. At 10:15 an all-new talk show, Discovery After Dark, debuts, with host Joe Bereta chatting with the castaways and celeb guests. The June 2013 premiere of Naked and Afraid delivered 4.16 million total viewers P2+, making it Discovery’s most-watched premiere ever.

 CASTING

Judy Davis has pulled out of a recurring role on Fox’s 24: Live Another Day “due to personal matters,” said the Hollywood Reporter. The event series, already in production, premieres Monday, May 5 at 8p; Davis had not started filming.

John Shea (Gossip Girl) joins Sharon Stone in TNT action drama pilot Agent X. Shea will play the U.S. president to Stone’s vice president.

Eliza Coupe (Happy Endings) begins her multi-ep arc on Showtime‘s House of Lies on Sunday, February 9 at 10p. Couple plays a hard-partying heiress.

SYNDICATION

Blue Bloods will soon be everywhere. CBS has signed a non-exclusive content licensing agreement with Hulu Plus for four seasons, starting later this year. The company had already struck deals with WGN for basic cable and ION for weekday, primetime syndication rights for the drama, averaging 14 million viewers in its fourth season, up 7 percent versus last year.

AWARDS SHOW CENTRAL

ABC News Digital launched “The Best Oscar Movie from the Past 64 Years,” an interactive bracket available on desktop and mobile that lets users pick their favorite films, leading up to the net’s telecast of the Oscars Sunday, March 2 at 7p. Exclusive launch sponsor is JCPenney; voters’ choice will be announced Friday, February 28 on ABC News.

Music net Fuse will air the 2014 BRIT Awards for the third year. Actor/producer James Corden (The Wrong Mans) returns as host; performers include Bruno Mars, Katy Perry and Lorde on Wednesday, February 19 at 9p.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association and dick clark productions announced the 72nd Annual Golden Globe Awards will air on NBC Sunday, January 11, 2015 at 8p. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler three-peat as hosts.

PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT

Starz is fast-tracking Survivor’s Remorse. The comedy, about the challenges facing a basketball star, comes from NBA All-Star LeBron James, Tom Werner, Mike O’Malley (Glee), Maverick Carter and Paul Wachter and is set for a fall 2014 premiere. Said Starz CEO Chris Albrecht, “We feel we really have an all-star team to capture the complexity and comedy inherent to this series.”

CBS ordered a pilot for CBS Television Studios drama Scorpion, about an eccentric genius, inspired by the life of Walter O’Brien and written by Nick Santora (Breakout Kings).

The CW sent sci-fi drama The Messengers to pilot. The CBS Television Studios/Thunder Road project focuses on a group of strangers charged with saving the world from the apocalypse.

VH1 greenlit scripted movie, Drumline: A New Beat (wt). Inspired by the 2002 film Drumline starring Nick Cannon, about a university marching band, the project follows the net’s 2013 ratings hit CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story, cable’s highest-rated original cable movie (2.9 among A18-49). Cannon will co-star in and exec produce the followup.

In just five days, media professionals will gather at The Cynopsis Media Boot Camp to hear exclusive how-to’s from experts on ratings analysis, web/social analytics and multi-platform buying. Don’t miss out register now!

INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS

MTV has teamed with Pepsi for a channel in India. Pepsi MTV Indies, a joint venture between Viacom and India media group Network18, will focus primarily on local culture.

DISTRIBUTION & CARRIAGE

FremantleMedia acquired the global format rights to Animo TV/Kite Entertainment reality competition Fittest Family, currently airing on Ireland’s RTE One. Coached by sports legends, families are put through extreme challenges.

RLTV, the net for 50+ viewers, acquired the rights to two documentaries from Renegade Productions as part of a development deal for future shows. A Shortstop in China focuses on Hall of Famer Cal Ripken’s first diplomatic trip to China; In the Face of Evil: Reagan’s War in Word and Deed premieres on the net tonight, February 6 (Reagan’s birthday) at 8p.

Electric Sky secured international rights to Fulwell 73′s documentary, The Life of Ryan. The film follows Manchester United’s Ryan Giggs.

RATINGS

OWN’s The Haves and the Have-Nots hit record highs on Tuesday, averaging 3.35 million viewers at 9p. It was the top cable program in total viewers, up 21 percent week to week. Among A18-49 it was the number two cable program, with a 1.13 rating, versus 1.15 for Discovery‘s Moonshiners.

Post-Super Bowl sampling didn’t give Fox‘s New Girl a boost Tuesday night. While the comedy scored 11.4 among A18-49 in its prime post-game slot Sunday, on Tuesday the comedy matched a series low 1.6/4 in the demo. Fox pointed out that no scripted show since Grey’s Anatomy in 2006 showed significant gains immediately following the big game.

NBC‘s The Biggest Loser finale was up 29 percent versus last week among A18-49, for a 2.2 rating, but was down 19 percent versus last year’s finale.

GSN announced that January was the best month in its history, delivering its largest total day audience in key demos, with year-over-year delivery increasing in double digits in total day (P25-54 rose 34 percent; W25-54 got a 38 percent boost) and primetime (P25-54 was up 46 percent; W25-54 saw a 47 percent lift). The net’s new original series Mind of a Man was watched by 6.5 million total viewers in January.
